Mrs Eliza Jeeves, wife of Ellis Jeeves, standing in the garden outside the Mountjoy Guest House in Kalorama. Eliza was one of six daughters of Thomas Hand and Eliza Hand, (nee Erith) who owned the Mountain Grange property. Eliza and Ellis ran the Mountjoy Guest House from 1908 and Eliza ran it alone after Ellis's death in a buggy accident in 1921 until just before her death in 1943. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.1). Asks for the use of trams 17, a bogie tram, and the scrubber and nominates the proposed routes. Mr Charles Craig will do the recording. Eliza Hand married Ellis Jeeves in 1885. They had 12 children, with 8 surviving to adulthood (5 boys and 3 girls). Eliza was one of the daughters of Thomas and Eliza Hand of Mountain Grange Homestead. Eliza and Ellis extended their home in the valley 'Kalorama' to become a Guest House. In 1908 they purchased 'Mountjoy Guest House' from the Paynter family and ran a very successful guest house and coach business. Following the death of Ellis Jeeves in a buggy accident in 1921, Eliza ran the guest house and her son, Hubert, the coaching business. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. Camp Westlake was built by Collingwood Technical School in 1967 and was officially opened on 22 September 1968. The camp was built by staff and students of the school with finance from various school sections and from materials donated by interested people and firms. It is named after Mr. F.R.Westlake and Mrs. Westlake who were staunch workers for the school. (From J.F.Barberis}Booklet of 15 pages with gold cover, A4 sized.
