Pamphlet - Ephemera, Brochure for Holmsdale Convalescent and Rest Home, 257 Union Road, Surrey Hills, 1936
Holmsdale Convalescent and Rest Home was built by John Mawson for his sisters Muriel, Beatrice and Harriet (and ? Ethel or Dorothy), all nurses. It was named after the sailing ship that their parents, Frederick W and Mary Mawson and baby Beatrice migrated on from England in 1882. John was a partner in the Box Hill building firm Garre tt and Mawson. The sketch of the nursing home used in the brochure was his work. It was opened on Saturday 14 March 1936 by Mr M J Boyland, MLA. The home was closed in the mid-1950s and converted into 4 self-contained flats, one of which was occupied by the sisters in their retirement; the others provided them with an income. Initial photocopies of this brochure, an invitation to the official opening of Holmsdale, photos of the ship Holmsdale, passengers' ticket for Fred W Mawson, Mary Mawson & Beatrice Mawson and notes compiled by John Howden about his late aunts (Bea, Hadge & Mouse) were donated to the collection by Randy Johnson, a tenant of John Howden's in late 2004. Subsequent research papers and photocopies of other family ephemera from John Howden are also filed in the Mawson vertical file.A brown bi-fold leaflet advertising the Holmsdale Convalescent and Rest Home located at 257 Union Road, Surrey Hills under the direction of the Misses Mawson (late Australian Army Nursing Service A I F). The compiler of this book, Carol Altmann, was born in Warrnambool and worked as a journalist for some years. She is the author of two other books and co-founder of the online magazine, Bluestone Magazine. ‘Warrnambool -This is home’ contains colour photographs of people and places that are favourites with the local residents. Some of them, such as the Aquarium, are no longer existing. This book is of some importance as it records the people and buildings that are well-known in the city and evoke fond memories for both those who live in the city and those who have moved away. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the district working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Edward Joseph Price was the first settler to take up a lot (Lot 1, Section 1) in the Village Settlement. He built a slab hut and brought up his family in 1896. This photograph shows a newer home built in 1908. It had a section used as a shop and also had a large room built that was to be used for public gatherings. Health department regulations led to this being impossible. The house faced Ridge Road.Black and white close up photograph showing a building made from wooden boards with trees in the front. In picture the room on the extreme left was bedroom for boys Charlie and Ted (Edward John). Under the gable was a large room planned for public use but never used owing to Health Department Regulations. The narrow door (open) and window were the shop which was the district’s first newsagency. Window behind leaves at right was the kitchen. 1908-1912. Date is approximate. House was built in 1910 and has been demolished. The woman on the verandah is probably Mrs P Falconer, Ron Falconer's mother. Her full name was Emily Victoria Aird (1884-1957), daughter of James Bromich Aird and Sarah Ann (nee Edwards). She married Patrick Henry Falconer on 11 December 1907 in Blackburn. The Falconer family lived in Albert Crescent for many years. Listed in electoral rolls in 1916 through to the 1950s. By 1963 the family were at 33 Weybridge Street, Surrey Hills. Emily and Patrick Henry Falconer had 4 children: Ronald Keith (b1908); Hilda Irene (b 1910); Harold Leslie (b 1913) and Hilah (b 1915). Photograph of a painting by Mrs Fonce Kerr that was donated to Legacy. It was exhibited at the Legacy Widows' Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1995. The article mentions Mrs Kerr was the ex-President of the Waverley Legacy Widows' Club. 'The picture is titled "Daddy's Home" and depicts the lower half of a serviceman dressed in khaki trousers and combat boots. Hugging his leg is a little girl in a blue dress. Words really don't describe the situation - seeing is better. It is a nostalgic depiction of considerable meaning to all members of our Legacy family - widows, dependents and Legatees. Mrs Kerr has generously presented the picture to Legacy - it will hang in the First Floor Dining Room.' This photograph is held in the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute Audio Visual Collection. Please contact BMI for all print and usage inquiries. Arthur Leckie was born in Sebastopol on 16 August 1876. In 1878 the family moved into their newly built home, Blythewood Grange, in Sebastopol. Arthur attended Grenville College and commenced Ballarat College in 1893. He was Apprentice as an Ironmonger at 'The Present Day Ironmonger' in Bridge Street. He next worked for William Dawson, Ironmonger, in Sturt Street, next to old The Courier Office. After the death of his father in 1893 the family moved out of ‘Blythewood Grange into Ballarat. The house was built in 1910. The Clota and Sans families were part of a group of families of Spanish (Catalan) background who lived around Surrey Hills, many of whom are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. The house was built for Antonio and Josepha Clota and passed on to their daughter Josephine Sans and her family. Antonio's full name: Antonio Eusebio Miquel CLota (1869-1940; died Surrey Hills) had 3 brothers who came to Australia with him. Louis Clota (1864-1925); Marcus Clota (1866-1940) died Surrey Hills; Eusebio Clota (1869-1919). Their parents remained in Spain. Josephine Clota and Kim Sans had photos taken on the front entrance to the house when they were married on 9 May 1919. The wedding was reported in Punch.Black and white photo of the home of Mr and Mrs Antonio Clota; later the home of their daughter Josephine and son-in-law, Kim Sans and family. It shows bluestone curb and channelling in Union Road and a substantial wire mesh fence. The street tree looks like a plane tree and is a relatively young plant.
