Founded in 1870 as a charitable hospital for sick children of indigent parents, a role it fulfilled for over 60 years. The 1930's began a long period of gradual transformation to provide services to all children and a centre for teaching and research. The pioneer and catalyst in this period was Ella Latham, the RCH tenth and longest serving President, 1933-1954.
