The artist, a member of this Society (self portrait inside cover), did several paintings of Creswick House, one of which was purchased by the owner Isobel Macbeth (also a PMH&PS member), who waved this item for the collection. Cornish College
Portrait, Richard Cornish, 1989
The portrait was commissioned by St Leonard's College in 1989. Mr Cornish sat for the artist in his office dressed in his cap and gown. Initially the portrait was hung in the main school hall, before being moved to the Cornish Campus in the mid 1990's.Richard Burnet Cornish was principal of St Leonard's College from January 1971 to October 1989. He was a dreamer, a driver, a doer and a visionary leader who purchased the land for Cornish Campus in July 1981 and presided at the official opening in February 1987. Allan McLean was a stock and station agent from Maffra. He was elected to local government, served as Shire President and was the first chairman of the Maffra Sugarbeet Factory. He became Premier of Victoria and first member for Gippsland in the Commonwealth Government. Vincenzo Brun was a prominant society painter in Melbourne in the 1890s. The portrait appears to have been commissioned by the Maffra Shire Council, and probably hung in their chambers for many years. Copy of an article from the Bendigo Weekly 30/12/1999 Discover Bendigo by James Lerk titled John Emery and His Associates. John Emery was a tailor who had a business in Raywood. He moved to Bendigo where he set up his business as a tailor, draper and clothing mercer at the corner of Pall Mall and Mitchell Street. The shop was close to the Beehive Exchange, where he invested in the quartz mining companies. He took on a partner, T S Gibson, who was a clothier. Emery was involved in the Bendigo Bowling Club and St Paul's Church. Later he travelled and became a collector of curios. He donated sculptures to the Bendigo Art Gallery and loaned a number of paintings. Photograph - black and white. Written on the back of the photo - Joseph Brady 1828 - 1908 Civil engineer who designed early Colilban system of waterworks. This photo was taken from a self portrait Frank Cusack of the Bendigo Advertiser had on loan from a Pru McKechnie of Huntly who was apparently a descendent of Joseph Brady. Frank Cusack had a 'diary' kept by Brady which had this painting in it plus numerous other paintings, etc. John Ashby R.W.C. (R. Daryl Lindsay was born and grew up in Creswick, one of the famous Lindsay family of artists. He had a love of horses and this was his favourite. He often did portraits of horses for famous owners.Daryl Lindsay became a noted international artist and the Director of the National Gallery of Victoria. This photographic portrait was commissioned to commemorate Dr Genevieve Goulding's term as President of ANZCA. Traditionally, ANZCA presidents have been commemorated at the end of their term with a commissioned oil painting. In 2015, the decision was made by ANZCA Council to change to photographic portraiture. This meant the existing oil paintings of College presidents became a formed collection which will not be added to and this portrait is the first to be commissioned in the new medium. It was unveiled at the ANZCA Council dinner on 22 July 2016. At the conclusion of a term in office, the Dean of the Faculty of Anaesthetists would have their portrait taken.This photograph is one in a series which documents the history of the development of the Faculty of Anaesthetists through portraits of past deans. The tradition has continued through to the development of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, although that also marked a transition to oil paintings rather than photography. This portrait was photographed by renowned photographic artist, Athol Shmith.
