Twenty-two people were injured, two seriously. Semi-trailer owned by Carlton and United Breweries. Tram driver Graham Barry McPhee, 31, was injured. Semi-trailer travelling along Queen’s Pde towards the city. No 88 tram bound for East Preston was just completing a turn from Smith St into Queen’s Pde. Six ambulances took 12 people to St Vincent’s and Royal Melbourne Hospitals. Police charged truck driver, 39, on two counts of manslaughter, and also charged driving under the influence of alcohol and exceeding .05. Railway tracks are produced straight. They may appear to be easy to bend and may appear flexible, but are required to be bent for curves, at rail joins on curves and at point (turn-out) junctions. For a safe transition around curves and in the finer areas of the point, this was required to be done with a manual rail bender. Sometimes referred to as a Jim Crow, the rail bender attaches its two claws to the rail. In the middle of the two claws is a screw that is slowly tightened using a crow-bar to bend the rail. Colour slide of legatees unloading wood from a semi trailer in a Melbourne laneway. It was during Operation Firewood. Legatees would organise collection of wood from the country and distribute it to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Other slides show the cutting and loading of wood and delivery to widows in metropolitan Melbourne. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. In many cases the original images were not well focussed and the digital image the best available.A record of Legacy helping widows by sourcing, supplying and delivering firewood.
