The Eltham Shire Hall and offices were opened on 21 November, 1941. They were replaced in 1965 with new offices at 895 Main Road and the site sold to Woolworths for development of the Eltham Village shopping mall. The building was demolished in 1970 and the new shopping mall opened in 1971. October Meeting (Newsletter No. 242, Oct. 2018) At our Society meeting at 8.00pm on Wednesday 10th October 2018 we will explore ideas about what is considered to be the ‘Spirit of Eltham’. We will view a video produced for the Shire of Eltham in response to the 1985 Victorian Local Government Commission Report titled ‘The Restructure of Local Government in Victoria – Principles and Program’ (the Morris review). The recommendation was to amalgamate the Shires of Eltham and Diamond Valley, something that Eltham Council did not support as being appropriate for the shire or compatible with the ‘Spirit of Eltham’. He has been a member of the Methodist / Uniting Church for all of his 66 years. Having moved from being a compositer in the printing trade to a teacher and lecturer, in his retirement he has become an historian. Eltham Inhabitants is ostensibly a history of the Eltham Uniting Church, written to celebrate its 150th anniversary. The book is considerably broader than the commission suggests. This is hinted at in Eckersalls reference to the Eltham Wesleyan/Methodist/Uniting Church. Eckersall writes on the history and philosophy of the church from its beginnings in the 18th century to the present and places it in the context of the sociology and history of the period. Recognising the nexus between church and community, the author has in large part written a history of the Eltham community including the churches of other denomination(s). There are very few artists, academics or other interesting characters from the district who don't get a mention. The former Police residence and Justice precinct including courthouse and stables) were being renovated for use by the Shire of Eltham. In 1998 the Police Residence was handed over to the Eltham District Historical Society for their use as a Local History Centre. Note that the replica police station to the right of the residence has not been constructed at this stage. Eltham Arbor Day, 10 October, 1973. School children of the Shire of Eltham planting trees with Alistair Knox in Eltham Town Park. Knox was a local architect and conservationist and councillor for the Shire of Eltham 1972-1975. The day was previously planned to take place during the visit of the Governor, Sir Rohan Delacombe to the Shire on 19th September, 1973 but cancelled that day due to inclement weather. Eltham Town Park would later be renamed Alistair Knox Park. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book," Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The Shire of Diamond Valley was a Local Government Area located about 20 kilometres northeast of Melbourne. The shire covered an area of 74.38 square kilometres and existed from 1964 until 1994. This example of a Boundary Sign was one of many located on the edge of the Shire e.g. at Wattle Glen Station; at Yan Yean Road north of Bannons Lane; 2 on Plenty Road near Larundel and Bundoora Primary School; one on the Para Road bridge; on Wattletree Road Eltham and on Kurrak Road Yarrambat. According to a former Shire employee, the signs were often stolen as quickly as they were replaced. The Mont Eltham Pot Belly Stove History The Mont Eltham Pot Belly Stoves were first manufactured in the 1960s at the Burrowes family business The Lyn Iron Foundry in Coburg Victoria by Barry and his father Charles Thomas Burrowes. The manufacture of The Mont Eltham Pot Belly continued in Victoria as The Mont Eltham Stove Co. by Barry and Glenda Burrowes in Montmorency and later in Thomastown. The castings were produced by leading Melbourne foundries, Cox & Rosetti , and Anderson & Ritchie. They were also made in Ballarat by The Harding Bros Foundry, and in Shepparton by The Furphy Foundry. The Mount Eltham pot belly stoves were manufactured until the late 1980s. Stove; cast iron pot belly stove. Very large cylinder shape with square base, grate shelf around centre, on 4 legs. Inscription on door. "Swagman" model. Made by Mont Eltham Stoves, Victoria. The main entrance to Franco's was from Main Road. It was run by Sammy and another family member. Franco's was a 2 story restaurant. Pizza take away downstairs. Licensed, BYO upstairs. Downstairs originally had a female pianist/singer and the walls were a peachy pink colour with horse shoe shapes in the plaster, upstairs was a full function room with dance floor. It was renovated in the early 90s and a full bar added downstairs. They sold up and then opened a take away pizza shop on Bolton Street. The Penguin Drycleaners building was an extension built right over the entrance garden; the building to the left the former Volumes now Missing Gorilla.
