This is an actual battle map used by Australian Forces in the battle of the Somme in France in April 1917. It is an ordinance survey map of the trenches in the area. It is framed in two pieces, one being the main map and the other the legend used to read the map. A group of British lancers moving through a village in France in 1917. For much of the war the British High Command kept immense reserves of cavalry behind the front line in the belief they could exploit successful thrusts by infantry into enemy lines. Pitted against the heavy artillery and the elaborately fortified trenches that typified the First World War, horses proved next to useless. A 48 page book, primarily humorous drawings that provide a lighter look at life in the trenches of France. It is missing its original cover and has a white cardboard cover to replace it. The drawings were drawn by Captain Bruce Bainsfather and published in The Bystander, a London publication and republished in Australia in 5 volumes. Unknown which volume this is from.
