Hand operated Bellows vacuum cleaner. Previously #27 The “Baby Daisy” Vacuum Cleaner is constructed from timber, steel and leather bellows. It has a carry handle fixed to the top. The base is approx. 500mm x 250mm. The height is approx 400mm. On one side is a bracket for a handle (missing) used to operate the bellows. The device is mounted on a foot plate that is split. On one side of the bellows is a circular metal detachable hatch, fixed by wing-nuts. This has a central hole for a tube (missing). Attached internally to this hatch is a cloth dust collection bag. The metal hatch has the following moulded words arranged in a circular fashion. 'DAISY Vacuum Cleaner). There are two brass plates fixed to the side of the cleaner above the hatch. These plates are stamped with 'Rd. No. 518080 and Rd. No. 530353' Gold printed Labels on the side say the following. BABY DAISER Vacuum Cleaner. Registered England. No. 518080/7 No. 530353/08 Trade Mark No.294851 /07 Designs France No. 25469/08 Germany No. 330219 / 08 Further Patents applied for. In the centre of the label is a picture of a Daisy Flower. William Smellie’s straight forceps are one of the most significant pairs of forceps in the Museum collection. William Smellie (1697– 1763), designed these forceps, which were an improvement on the forceps of that time. These forceps were easier to use being shorter and lighter, particularly in the handles, with pelvic curve shaped blades. He invented a locking device for the two blades. The blades were lined with leather and greased with hog’s lard for the ease of delivery and the greater comfort of the patient, this being in the era prior to an understanding of sepsis and the need for surgical hygiene.Smellie was groundbreaking in his understanding of Childbirth and became an influential teacher of Obstetrics. He diligently studied the birthing process, particularly the descent of the baby’s head down the birth canal. His observations lead to him noting that many deaths occurred because of a lack of understanding of this process and the inappropriate handling of forceps. Smellie is generally given the credit for improving the forceps to make them easier to use and less likely to damage the baby. Smellie’s "Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Midwifery" was published In 1751 and became a widely influential teaching resource. Copies of this birth atlas are held in the Frank Forster Library, RANZCOG. Smellie's obstetric forceps. Iron forceps with traces of leather on the two blades. This item was purchased at Leski's, Melbourne, Medical collection auction, 8 May 2013. The incubator was part of a rare collection of medical, dental and pharmaceutical objects belonging to a tourism business, Kryal Castle, near Ballarat, Victoria from 1974. At some point,apparently, an officer manager discarded the museum records, so the provenance of the neonatal incubator, and many other items in the Leski auction, has been lost.Neonatal incubator, "Glenleigh", made and used, late 1950s- early 1960s. The four side laminated panels as well as bottom panel are possibly made of asbestos fibreboard,. Each panel is sealed with polished aluminium strips, and has a metal handrail.The incubator is mounted on four castors made by "Shepherd USA'. On the front panel is a bakerlite dial and a bakerlite switch. The item is incomplete: the cover, probably glass, is missing. Inside the unit is an old calico infant's mattress.There are two name plates on the front panel; “Australia/ Victor Watson/Limited/ New Zealand” and "Glenleigh/ Baby Incubator/ Aeronautical & Industrial Lighting Co/ 677-9 North Road Carnegie”. Part of Frank Forster's baby feeding bottle collection. In Australia, this type of bottle was known as "Truflow"; and was manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. The missing 'c' on this bottle makes this bottle rare and of greater value than similar ones with the correct spelling. These were intended for use during pregancy, worn as an aid for the correction of inverted or depressed nipples. Nipple shields will help some babies attach to the breasts, that are otherwise unable to. Shields are made of a fine, silicone material that sits over the areola and nipple. Each nipple shield is plastic and consists of two parts which are separated by turning the top part anti-clockwise. The bottom part of each shield has a central opening 3cm in diameter. This type of string, or twine, was frequently used by obstetricians to tie the umbilical cord after the delivery of a baby. Thicker string was favoured because there was less chance of cutting through the soft cord tissue surrounding the umbilical vein. Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan worked in the Victorian country town of Casterton as a general practitioner from 1919 until his death in 1977. He also practiced obstetrics. His son, Dr David More O'Sullivan donated his obstetric bag and its contents to the College in 1999. These are long obstetrical forceps following the design of Sir James Young Simpson (1811-1870). They are longer and heavier than Simpson's type of short forceps and were used to deliver babies from higher up the birth canal. Simpson's long and short forceps were adapted in many later designs. ... Collection (Two Grunau Baby 2, and a Grunau Baby 3A), the changes ...This aircraft was designed by Edmund Schneider as a single seat medium performance sailplane. Originally designated as the Grunau 3b but later named the Grunau 4. However, it was a new design with fully enclosed cockpit. The main point of difference to earlier Schneider Grunau designs was the tapered wings with the Gottingen 549 aerofoil. This design feature gave the Grunau 4 a better speed range compared to the Grunau Baby 2b or the Grunau 3. The prototype flew on 6 December 1953 and it went to the Waikerie Gliding Club. A second was delivered to the Dubbo Gliding Club in October of the next year and a third (the Australian Gliding Museum’s exhibit) built for the Adelaide Soaring Club in 1959 (registered as VH-GLX on 21 October 1959). Another was built by Josef Brabec from a Schneider supplied kit from 1954 to 1956. The log book indicates that the glider recorded 2362 flying hours over approximately 40 years of active service. There are many long flights recorded. The registration was cancelled on 30 July 2014 as a result of a decision by the Museum to withdraw the glider from service. The exhibit represents the final development of the "Grunau" single seat type by Edmund Schneider Ltd in Australia. Viewed together with the Grunau Baby gliders in the ATO Collection (Two Grunau Baby 2, and a Grunau Baby 3A), the changes to this glider type over a 30 year period can be recognized. The aircraft is white with Linden Green on the wing tips, tailplane and underside of the fuselage and also on the central wing cover. This knitted layette including a bonnet, cardigan, and two booties was created by Mrs Lavinia Brown, a champion knitter who loved Churchill Island. Mrs Brown was born on 16 June 1913 in Regent, and she entered all of her knitting into the Royal Melbourne Show. Her daughter recalls that her knitting never won anything less than first prize, and was most often Champion. She remembers that once Mrs. Brown's work was disqualified as being 'machine knitted', and after an appeal in which she was required to knit a pattern in front of them, she was awarded the champion. Mrs Brown chose to use bicycle spokes with wax ends as she could not find needles small enough for use to make babies' clothing.Lavinia Brown loved Churchill Island, and this was donated by her daughter, A. Cattell. Clothing. Infant's cream coloured satin silk bonnet. Embroidered sheaf of flowers on the back of the crown. Back edge trimmed with one cm lace. Front edge of bonnet has two triangular fold back tabs edged with lace. A pleated fabric frill is stitched across the top of the bonnet underneath the stitched down tabs.The front edge of the bonnet is trimmed with a double frill of white silk fabric. A fabric bow is attached at each front corner above satin silk ties (38 cms X 5 cms). Fully lined with silk fabric gathered into centre back. Clothing. Tiny kid(?) leather soles - just 11 cms long, with burgandy silk fabric uppers- having a centre front seam, and a centre back seam. These seams are machine stitched and then top stitched on both sides of the seam, with tiny machine stitches. A 'turn-back' of burgandy, fake-fur trims around the ankle high boots and two burgandy silk ribbon bows, fasten the boot at the outer ankle. Inners of the boots are lined with a canvas-like fabric. Marseille My Dream Baby doll, 8-22" tall, bisque head, lightly painted hair, painted or sleep eyes, doll mold 351 has an open mouth with two upper teeth, cloth body with bisque or composition hands or composition jointed body, came as either a white doll or black doll. Doll face shown is a socket bisque head with sleep eyes on a composition jointed body. Armand Marseille of Sonneberg and Koppelsdorf, Thüringia, Germany was one of the worlds largest and best known bisque doll head manufacturers. The founder was born in 1856 in St. Petersburg, Russia the son of an architect and immigrated to Germany with his family after 1860. In 1884 he bought the toy factory of Mathias Lambert in Sonneberg and in 1885 acquired the porcelain factory of Liebermann & Wegescher in Koppelsdorf . . and his empire in the doll world began. Made 1924 - 1930 and later Bisque heads made by AM represented a new born infant. They came in white, brown and black versions. Mold 351 with open mouth and two lower teeth. The bodies were either cloth or composition AM doll. China haed, sleep eyes, painted lashes, two bottom teeth. Doll’s head has been repaired (badly) Composition body in good condition Embroidered lawn dress with pink embroidery. Appears to be original clothes Doll purchased from Harrods in London in 1926 -

Black and White photo of two grave stones that have fallen onto the grass and broken. The one to the left is broken in two and on the right the grave is in four pieces. The Grave at the right (Granite Headstone) is that of George F. Campion a young Englishman who died at Boort Station on May 31st, 1851. Buried beside him (grave unmarked) was the baby boy of 'John & Jane' married couple on the Station. The grave on the left (marble slab) is that of George Bertram Godfrey, son of Henry & Mary Godfrey, aged 1 year 5 months.
