From notes on the ILC (Intermediate Legacy Club): The ILC was formed in 1929 with a total membership of 18. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. For many years Legacy was invited to bring junior legatees to Government House for for an enjoyable Legacy Christmas party. There were entertainers, carousels and often a train ride. And the joy of a Christmas present for each child. This photo was published in the March 1945 newsletter so was from the party in December 1944. The caption says 'Oscar the bull was a great success with the children at the Junior Legacy Club's Christmas party in Government House grounds. The fact that Oscar wore boots did not in the least detract from his popularity, judging by the expressions of glee.' The governor at the time was His Excellency Sir Frederick Mann. A Legacy widow, Beryl Billing, with two school girls from Siena College and a lot of loose letters. Six school girls came to Legacy house to meet the weekly gathering of the stamp ladies. They had chosen Legacy as a cause they wanted to help and decided to collect stamps, they donated over 5,000 stamps. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Beryl Billings was the co-ordinator of the stamp sorting for many years. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. Melbourne Legacy wished to mark the friendship and goodwill by the members and management of Huntingdale Golf Club as far back as 1933, by presenting a Lone Pine sapling to Huntingdale Golf Club in 1992. L/- G. M. Swan (President 1992) is on the far right. A similar photo was featured in the Widows' Newsletter in July 1992. The men in yellow blazers are Huntingdale Golf Club's captain, Tony Reidy, President, Len Rainer and past president Douglas McLean. This photo provides an example of the beautiful costumes worn by Junior Legacy girls for Legacy's Annual Demonstrations at the Melbourne Town Hall. The girls are dressed as native American girls. A similar photo was featured in the Age Newspaper on 20 October 1952. The caption read 'These girls of the Legacy Club could pass for Indian lasses as they wait their turn to perform in the Totem Tom Tom at Melbourne Town Hall, They were among those who participated in Legacy's annual demonstration of physical culture, dancing and allied activities.' Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. According to the article published in The Answer in August 1995 these ladies were meeting for a Widows' Club Seminar at Legacy House on 8th may 1995. The article says "On that day representative from Widows Clubs and groups from throughout Victoria are together for a seminar - guest speakers covered a wide-ranging agenda. From an article in The Answer newsletter December 1995 edition there was a Remembrance tour to Canberra for widows in 1995. 1995 was the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II and there were remembrance events all over Australia as part of 'Australia Remembers'. The ladies are standing at the Changi War Memorial, Duntroon. The article says: "On 5th August, 32 members of various Legacy Clubs journeyed to Canberra on a 4 day Remembrance Tour. A wonderful time was had by all. The whole tour was wonderfully organised. We got off to a very cold and wet start, even to snow on the way, but by the time we reached our Motel the sun was out and it remained out all the time were were there. The highlights of my trip personally were Duntroon, The War Museum and Parliament House. It was great to met all the other Club Members and to establish friendships. Widows would often volunteer to visit other widows in hospital. Here Vi Scales is visiting Maeve Kirchert, a patient at Azalea Lodge, Dandenong. An early attempt to catalogue Legacy memorabilia which refers to 33 boxes of items split into subject matter such as 'History of Legacy', 'Finance Committee', 'Junior Legacy', 'Shrine', Group and Branch histories, and photograph albums. No indication of when it was compiled or by whom though it is presumed to be the Archive committee that was established by Frank Doolan who collected a lot of the items in the archive cabinets. Uses a rudimentary system of cataloguing e.g. 'H1. Inauguration of Remembrance Club. Box 1', where 'H' refers to History. 'S' refers to Shrine. Includes three loose typed and handwritten sheets listing films and tapes. A high number of History documents (H1 - H63) are filed in Box 25 - 01475 onwards. Believed to be from the archive project in the early 1970s by L/ Frank Doolan and L/ Brian Armstrong. This item appears to have catalogued at 00507 as well.
