Document - Short Road Ferry ticket, c.1974
From the collection of Warren DOUBLEDAY. The Short Road ferry ran between the end of Williamstown Road in Port Melbourne across the narrowest section of the Yarra River to the bottom of the Strand in Williamstown. The name came from it being the 'short road' between the two places. There was a type of ferry service in operation from around 1873 which was modernised in the 20th century to take cars and trucks across the river. It was operated by two heavy chains which sank to the river bed to allow ships to pass.A single trip 15 cent ticket for crossing the Yarra River from Williamstown on the Short Road Ferry. The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo in 1958 as Whitehorse Road was being widened. This was done in sections. It was taken from adjacent to the Coop family home at No.688. The house on the corner of High Street and Whitehorse Road (39 High Street) can be seen in the middle distance. A digital copy of a colour photograph of Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert looking towards Box Hill. The chimneys of Box Hill Gasworks can be seen in the distance. O'Callaghan's hotel was one of three 'hotels' which operated in Mitcham in the late 19th century. Suited on the corner of Station St and Whitehorse Road it was run by Irish widow, Mary Jane O'Callaghan. This is the medal won by Peter Grundell in 1913 for the fastest time for the Novice 10 Mile Road Race.Peter Grundell was the first notable secretary of the Geelong Cycling Club.
