Functional object - Brass coin holder - 3d and 6d
Used by tramway revenue clerks, most likely the MMTB, including the Ballarat Tramway Museum to count coins, as only so many 3d or 6d would fit into each container. Each has a hole in the base to enable it to be checked that it was empty prior to use or after being used. One of the 3d containers have a loose "washer" which shows the nature of the construction. Has been secured with a piece of wrapping tape. One of the 6d tubes has a label advising that it would hold "$30 of $2 coins"Demonstrates the methodologies used to count coins and stack them in a revenue office. Provides a sample of each coin that would have been used. Brass coin holder - for use in counting 3d and 6d coins. Made from brass tube with a brass washer rolled or fixed to one end. Obituary from the Prahran Telegraph, 21-6-1929, headed "Death of an old Caulfield Identity" Edward Rowney. After coming from South Australia in 1887, worked in Ballarat as a horse tram driver and then moved to Caulfield in 1888 working for the Caulfield Horse Tramway that ran between Elsternwick and Glenhuntly. Provides details of his working life and that with the Caulfield Council. Provides details of his personal and family information along with sources. Letter - from Alwyn Marshall Toolamba to Wal Jack, 1958 & 1959
Wal Jack had an extensive range of correspondents throughout Australia and the world. This set are two letters from Alwyn Marshall of Toolamba, who travelled extensively. His first letter discusses tramways in Sydney, the type of trams in use, Brisbane tramways, NSW Railways on the Sydney to Brisbane line, Queensland railways, the Sandy Hollow line and the wooden trestle bridge near Nayook. He used a motor bike for his Australian travels. Drawing, "Sectionalizing Diagram - St Kilda - Brighton Beach", c1957
Drawing shows the power supply arrangement to the overhead for the VR St Kilda Brighton tramway, including Elwood depot and substation. Has been marked up for removal of the line south of Elwood Depot to Brighton and Dickens St crossover. Shows the isolating and paralleling switches and their pole numbers. Not known when the original drawing was prepared. The tramway or electric street raikway operated from 1906 to 1959, the section south of Elwood depot closing in two stages during 1956. One of a group of signs that were fitted into tramcars in Ballarat, giving instructions to passengers about prams, behaviour, smoking, fare payment, talking to the motorman, instructions or information to drivers etc. Yields information about the sign manufacture, demonstrates the type of signs provided in tramcars.Set of seven enamel signs, black capital letters and lines on white background, titled " No Smoking". One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Sign has a black enamel backing, with marks from the enamelling process. Seven Number.
