The Marysville-Buxton Road joins the Maroondah Highway which leads to Alexandra. The Marysville-Woods Point Road was originally part of the Yarra Track, constructed in the early 1860s to provide access between Healesville and the Woods Point Goldfields. Despite the steep terrain and engineering difficulties, the Yarra Track soon became a busy route used by pack horses, horse-drawn drays, and wagons. Today this sealed mountain road is a popular scenic drive between Marysville and Warburton. This photograph was published by the Valentine Publishing Co Pty. An album of photos from the ship that brought returned servicemen, including JB McLean, home from World War 1 in 1920. Photos include Suez Canal, Kantara military camp Egypt, onboard life boat drills, onboard baby competition, boxing and a visit to Bombay. The Ceramic departed Tillbury, UK 12th March and docked in Freemantle on 27th April 1920 and then went onto Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney. The Ceramic was a transport vessel built in Belfast in 1913 for the White Star Line to transport frozen produce and apples from Australia to UK. It was taken over by the Australian Government for troop transport in October 1914 and could carry over 3,000 troops. This trip in 1920 there were 1467 on board, there were women and children as well as 439 soldiers returning home, one of whom was John 'Basil' McLean. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving Portsea in 1920.A collection of items from John Basil McLean is in the archive. One photo from an album belonging to JB McLean, of his voyage home from World War 1 in 1920 on the Ceramic. The photos show passengers on the deck of the Ceramic dressed in life jackets. It shows the type of life preservers and clothing worn at the time. Harriet Wilson was the wife of William Wilson. The Wilsons were members of Linton's Methodist congregation. The original of this photograph of Mrs Wilson is in an album donated by Mrs Stella Surman (album in Box 13. Page 5, lower right). A pencil inscription next to the photograph reads "Burnt to death". Notes with the copy of the photograph in the Wilson family file say that Mrs Wilson smoked a pipe, set her clothes alight and died in the resulting fire. Mrs Wilson died on New Year's Day, 1900. Northern District School of Nursing nurse's base uniform 1950s - 70sBlue cotton uniform worn beneath white apron. The uniform is open at the front with nine button holes in right placket for buttons and shanks to attach. There are corresponding buttonholes on left side for closing with white buttons and metal shanks, a small pocket at top left and a pocket at RHS of skirt. There is a small buttonhole at back of neck and two each on inside seam of sleeves to attach collar and cuffs. The front has gathering from below the shoulders and the back top has an inverted pleat at centre.Two white tags one with 'Cotton' in red is attached inside back neck. At a well attended meeting at the Mechanics Hall in Cheltenham in March 1900, attendees decided to form a rifle club. The newly appointed secretary of the newly formed Cheltenham Rifle Club, Mr E.C. Rippon, enrolled 55 new members on the day, and the club resolved to consult with the Defence Department regarding the suitability of Cheltenham Park for that purpose, and Moorabbin Council to grant the use of the park. By 1912 the club was already on the verge of disintegrating. The Cheltenham Park range had been disbanded two years earlier. A new, shorter range and club rooms were completed in October 1912. The club continued to have difficulties over location and funds, despite being granted an exemption from paying rates for the duration of the First World War. In 1919, a proposal to disband was put forward at a club meeting. Members rejected the proposal deciding instead to wait on the rumoured reopening of the Langwarrin range. By 1921 it became evident the Langwarrin range would not reopen. A resolution to wind up the organisation was put to the meeting and accepted.Green, cloth bound book with red leather spine. A white label is adhered to the front of the book with MINUTE BOOK printed in black text. The book is hardcovered and, inside, are approximately 186 pages which have been filled with handwritten text as meeting minutes and lists, including a list of commitee officers.
