Harcourt Valley Heritage & Tourist Centre
Book, Harcourt Speaks, 2009
'Harcourt Speaks' represents the collaboration of a group of local orchardists, farmers, growers and local community who worked together to gather photos and stories of strength, cohesion and innovation around the impact of relentless drought and changing climatic conditions. This was a drought assistance project supported by the Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Victorian Government Dept of Community Planning and Development.Project Facilitator was Phillippa Gregory and Photography Community Development was provided by Deanna Neville.Provides a cross-section of the working adults of a rural community as they faced the grim reality of extended drought with attendant restrictions on the use of irrigation water and the consequent near disastrous impact on horticulture in this famed horticultural valley. Each photo has a brief story attached. The captions tell how this community responded by acceptance and innovation, using words like "we adapted' 'we were innovative' 'new directions chosen' 'resilience' 'optimistic'.This project is significant in that it depicts a community that, faced with real adversity, was not weakly submissive, nor crushed, but made the best of it.It has significance as an example of a creative response to a prolonged negative situationSixteen page, spiral bound, A4 'landscape'book with coloured title page, with 31 coloured photographs.Harcourt Speaks -

Between 1947 and 1971 about 309,000 people arrived in Australia through the Bonegilla Reception and Training Centre in Northeast Victoria. Bonegilla was the largest and longest serving migration reception centre. It usually accommodated about 3,000 people but did hold up to 7,000 at one stage. It was a young person's place. Melbourne Legacy
Document - Memorandum, Future of Legacy
Memo dated 5 January 1973 from R.J.A. Foskett, the President of Melbourne Legacy, to Branch Chairmen and Members of the Board of Management setting up a meeting with them on 22 February 1973 to discuss the future of Legacy nationally. L/ Foskett identifies the following issues to be explored: 1. Admission of WWII men as Legatees 2. Rate of decline in membership 3. Maintenance of the Legacy style of service 4. How to wind up Legacy in the event of that being decided 5. How to perpetuate Legacy if not wound up. Exemplifies the thinking post WWII that the need to care for widows and children would fall away as the children became adults, which is surprising given that the Vietnam War was going on and didn't end until 1975.3 x foolscap photocopied, black on white. Two holes punched for filing. Page 1: letterhead review committee, conference -

Clothing - Blouse and Belt, mid-to-late 19th century
This handmade blouse with its matching belt was donated along with a note that says, "This jacket was owned by Marion Leishman who married Captain Eadie. They lived in Warrnambool and are buried at Tower Hill Cemetery." The spelling on the headstone is "Edie" rather than "Eadie". Marion Leishman Edie was born in 1835 and died on August 7, 1914. She married Captain Richard Wilson C Edie in 1865. Capt. Edie drowned at sea on 16th June 1883 aged 49 years. Marion Leishman Edie died on 7th August 1914 aged 79 years. Her sister Alison Keishman Sprod, died in 1863, aged 25 years, and is also buried in the same grave at Tower Hill. The fine satin blouse and matching belt is an example of clothing worn by women in the mid-to-late 19th century. It demonstrates the beautiful and talented skills applied to handmade garments. The decoration indicates that the blouse or jacket was worn for a special occasion.Blouse of black satin, decorated with lace and sequins.
