The photograph was taken in 1994 shortly after the improvements to the garden and play are at Bulla Primary School had been completed. Some of the improvements included a school garden and updated playground equipment.The upgrading of the outdoor area at the Bulla Primary School resulted in the students enjoying many more interesting and beneficial physical activities at their school. In the early 1990s extensive work work was done to the outdoor areas of the Bulla Primary School, which included a school garden and modern playground equipment. The photograph shows three pieces of the equipment installed in the playground, namely a slide, a climbing frame and balancing equipment. The improvements to the outdoor area at Bulla Primary School gave the students a wider range of extra-curricular activities. The children and their teacher were engaged in a variety of outdoor gardening activities for the three days from 26th - 28th April 1989 for Arbor Week. Over the three days a new garden bed was set out as well as tree planting. During Arbor Week, people are encouraged to plant trees as well as caring for established gardens. The date varies from across different countries and takes into account suitable seasonal planting conditions. Captain Cook's Cottage was dismantled in his village in England and rebuilt in Melbourne's Fitzroy Gardens in the 1930s. Since then it has been an attraction for many visitors although there is little relationship between Captain Cook as he never set foot anywhere in Victoria. The photograph was taken when the students from the Bulla Primary School were taken on an excursion to Werribee Park Mansion, one of Victoria's gracious homes built in the nineteenth century. "Glenara' was the home of Alistair Clark who lived at Bulla which is situated about 20 kms NW of Melbourne in the Deep Creek valley. He was born there in 1864 and lived there throughout his lifetime until his death in 1949. His father established the property during the mid-nineteenth century. Alister Clark was a rose grower and created the very popular 'Lorraine Lea 'rose along with other famous species. A rose garden has been established in the township of Bulla in his memory. He was also an active member of the Victorian Racing Club. The original photograph was published in the Melbourne 'Herald' on 20 August 1952 on page 5.Alistair Clark was a prominent rose grower and developed many rose species which were suitable for Victorian conditions. The homestead is a good example of Victorian architecture built in Victoria in the latter years of the nineteenth century. There are a series of photographs in the collection which featured school improvements which were carried out on the building and the grounds in 1994 at the Bulla Primary School No. 46. The improvements included painting the school buildings, installing new playground equipment and laying our the school garden to include a vegetable garden. The first classroom to be built was a bluestone building, which opened in 1870.
