Book, History of Port Fairy
This is a typewritten account of the history of Port Fairy from 1810 to 1890. It was written by William Earle (1850 -1902). In an addenda at the back of this folder there is a note from William Earle which indicates that the booklet was written in 1896 ‘as a result of a prize offered by several residents in a Schedule issued in connection with a local Industrial Exhibition, which Prize it secured’. Does this refer to the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition? No evidence of this has yet been found. As this folder was given to the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library in 1963, some ten years before Earle’s history was reprinted in 1973, it is an early copy of Earle’s original work and may have been produced in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The original material was first published by the Port Fairy Gazette in 1896.This folder is of great interest as it is an early copy of Earle’s History of Port Fairy, an important historical publication. This is a black cardboard folder containing 120 typewritten foolscap pages about the history of Port Fairy 1810-1890 (written by William Earle). Inside the front cover there is a stamp of the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library. The front cover has a sheet of white paper stuck on with adhesive tape. It has a black and white sketch of an anchor, a sailing ship and a rope. The pages are attached to the folder with four metal studs. There is a loose sheet inside with a note about the donor of the folder and a name handwritten on the front cover. ‘W.Earle’ ‘Presented by Mr Owen, Warrnambool, May/1963’ history of port fairy, william earle, shiplovers society of victoria -

Document - Folder, Brief history of the Ringwood Secondary College site in Bedford Road, Ringwood, Victoria, since 1905 and subdivision in 1924
Terry Kane and Richard Carter were the authors of the short historyType written notes and plans pertaining to the land titles and history of the Ringwood Secondary College site from 1905, prior to the land being sold by the Borough of Ringwood in 1954 to the Education Department. Transcript of covering letter from Richard Carter to Mr T Kane dated 16 November 2012 - "Re: Ringwood Secondary College As we discussed recently, I have done some research into the history of the site. Going back to 1905, the site, then 26 acres one rood 37 perches, was in the name of Walter James Anderson of 61 William Street, Melbourne, Accountant - most likely a speculator. Title transferred to Theodosia Anderson of 167 Collins Street, Melbourne, Artist - possibly his son - In 1907. Theodosia Anderson was thus the owner when on abortive subdivision Into "110 Splendid Home Sites" as "Bedford Park Estate, Ringwood" took place In 1924, creating Anderson Street, Joyce Street, Adams Street and Graham Road, all of which sank without trace. Theodosia Anderson died In 1933, leaving the property to John Blair, Solicitor of Melbourne and Annie Benson of Melbourne, widow, until title ultimately passed to The Mayor, Councillors and Burgesses of the Borough of Ringwood In 1946. Title was then spilt Into three with 14 acres 0 rood 11 perches being transferred to the Minister of Education on 1954 followed by a further 2 acres 1 rood 26 perches to the Minister In 1956. The balance of the land remains In the ownership of the now Maroondoh City Council as Bedford Park. It Is Interesting that at no stage did any of the land belong to the Commonwealth of Australia, notwithstanding that I always understood It was the site of the P.M.G. Workers Camp after the War. Perhaps the P.M.G. utilized the site by arrangement with the borough of Ringwood; perhaps the camp was on the opposite site of Hill Street (Government Road). More research Is needed on this point. Yours faithfully, CE CARTER & SON PTY LTD Richard Carter Managing Director" -

Document - RESEARCH PAPERS: THE OTHER FOUNTAIN, 2023
The Temperance Society was formed in 1857 and in 1862 the foundation stone was laid for a public drinking fountain and reading room in View Street, Bendigo. In 1864, building additions saw the inclusion of a free library. The fountain, made of Buckeye Creek granite, featured 4 or more taps with drinking cups attached by chain. In 1895 further extensions on the site resulted in the current façade, leaving no room for the fountain. In 1896 the fountain was moved to its current site in Rosalind Park between the sound shell and the school.Newspaper detailing the history of Bendigo's oldest fountains.fountains, temperance hall, malcolm fraser, d buchan -

Slide - Glass Slide Photos of Bendigo Cinema Advertising, Mid 1900s
Bendigo followed much the same pattern as Ballarat, and was not ready for an up-to-date studio until 1880 when the Bartlett Bros. (Francis and Henry) who bad conducted a successful business in Melbourne for many years opened a small studio there. It was such a success that they decided to build large modern premises, and Francis made two trips to England and the Continent for the latest ideas. In 1884 Henry died, and to replace him, Francis secured the services of Robert W. Bugg, then employed by Foster & Martin (both pupils of Batchelder's) in Collins Street, Melbourne. In that studio Bugg made some fine portraits of Anthony Trollope during the novelist's long tour of Australia. Francis Bartlett was a keen business man, and Robert Bugg was a great operator and a fine painter. Together, their success was quite outstanding. Fifteen years later Bartlett retired with a fortune, and Bugg took over the studio. Robert William Bugg, one of our leading Painter-Photographers, was born in London in 1853, and came to Melbourne when he was five years old. He became a pupil of Louis Buvelot and, in 1879, a member of the Victorian Academy of Arts. In Bendigo he gave annual exhibitions of his oils and water colours, a number of his exhibitions being officially opened by his friend Alfred Deakin. There are a number of Bugg's Paintings in the Bendigo Art Gallery. All the portraits, landscapes, buildings, and city views illustrated in "Bendigo and Vicinity, 1897", are from photographs taken by Robert Bugg. He was a clever, genial and popular soul, and his influence on the cultural life of his adopted city was considerable. He retired in 1932 and died in his early eighties.Nine Photos of vehicles from Glass Plate Negatives Slides are ex Bartlett Brother Bendigo.
