VX 27898 Corporal Thomas John Morris Thomas (Tom Thomas) donated several items to Cranbourne RSL. He served in the Australian Corp Signals in WWII both in Australia and overseas. He was born at Womerah on 9/11/1906 and died at Koo Wee Rup 16/06/1984. B Squadron of 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles was based on Wangaratta-Benalla. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. The Bendigo School of Mines was opened in 1873 following the first report of the Technological Commission in 1869 which recommended the establishment of schools of design and science to meet the scientific and technical needs of the mining industry on the local gold fields. Initially mining, chemistry, geology, metallurgy and art were taught while a separate school of design was established in c. 1870 but incorporated into the School of Mines around 1883 when it was renamed as the School of Mines and Industry. In 1904 The Mechanics Institute was liquidated and its assets and buildings acquired by the School of Mines. Around 1907 a Junior Technical School commenced to operate at the School of Mines and Industry but ceased operating in 1961 with that function being transferred to the White Hills and Kangaroo Flat Technical Schools. The Bendigo School of Mines and Industry became known as the Bendigo Technical College from the 1st July 1959. It operated under that name until February 1967 when it became the Bendigo Institute of Technology (B.I.T.). Construction work commenced in c.1965 which saw the Institute progressively re-locate to new buildings at Flora Hill. He was elected a representative in the Mandurang riding in the Shire of Strathfieldsaye in 1887, served as Mayor of the City of Bendigo from 1917 - 1918 and was Secretary of the Bendigo Art Gallery for over 20 years. His father Joseph Abbot had been a member of the School of Mines Administrative Council and RH Abbott served as President of the School of Mines for two years and was a highly regarded business man within the local community. A handwritten account of the early girls' classes by a junior legatee, Elaine Miller (Smith). She recounts the formation of the classes in 1927 and early camps. She recalls calling Legatee Savige 'Uncle Stan'. The older girls formed the 'Old Girls Club' which then was renamed 'Intermediate Legacy Ladies Club' (ILLC). A brochure issued by the National War Memorial Committee of Victoria to inform the public about the plans for the Shrine of Remembrance and how they could contribute towards its cost. The Governor of Victoria points out that the need to remember, as 'To forget is to be false to the men who fell, to the cause for which they fell, and to ourselves. Let the whole people join in creating such a Monument as will keep the Names and Memories of the men fresh in the minds of our children's children.' The brochure mentions that the cost of the Shrine was estimated to be £180,000. Of this £80,000 was guaranteed and the remaining £100,000 needed to be raised. It shows that each contribution will be recorded within the crypt as one of those who gave the Memorial to the Nation. It also states 'Each contribution honours our men, redeems our promise that they shall never be forgotten, and helps in presenting to the nation a durable foundation to traditions of patriotism and self-sacrifice, and in the immediate future assists hundreds of worthy returned soldiers who, as a result of the temporary trade depression, are in need of employment. Actually, seven-tenths of the total cost of the Memorial will be expended in wages...' A sample of the type of receipt given to record donations is on page 3. An actual receipt is at 01207. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. Labelled 'Shrine of Remembrance S1 - S14' it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. (01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01210).A record of fundraising for the Shrine of Remembrance, this brochure asks Victorians to contribute approximately £100,000 to the building project. This bonnet was made to be worn by Patricia Kathleen Grant. She was born in1925, the daughter of Dr Frank John Audas Grant and Kathleen Josephine Dixon. Dr Frank Grant gave many years of service to the Wodonga community both as its doctor and on several community organisations and committees. He was born in South Yarra, Victoria in 1897 and after finishing school he began Medical Studies at Melbourne University. In 1915 he enlisted in the Australian Army and was assigned to the Hospital Transport Corps and later with the 8th Field Artillery Brigade aboard HMAT Medic. He was wounded in action with gunshot wounds to the arm and back. After time in hospital in England, Frank was returned to Melbourne where he was discharged as medically unfit on 24th October 1917. During World War II Dr Frank Grant served as an Honorary Captain in the Australian Army Medical Corps. His records show that he was accidentally “Mustard Gassed” at Bandiana. Dr Frank Grant commenced practice in Wodonga in 1923, entering into a partnership with Dr Rudolph Schlink. This marked the beginning of a long career dedicated to the Wodonga community. By 11 August 1926 he held the role of Public Vaccinator with the Commission of Public Health in Wodonga. Apart from long years of dedication to health in Wodonga, Dr Grant also took on numerous roles within Wodonga. This included being a Commissioner of the Wodonga Waterworks Trust from 6 April 1932 until 29 July 1963. He was a strong advocate for the development of the Wodonga Base Hospital which opened in 1954. In September 1937, a group of ladies met to form a Ladies’ Committee to assist the General Committee in raising funds for a Public Hall. Those present were Mrs Allen, Mrs Bowman, Mrs Hickey, Mrs Rains, Mrs Boake and Mrs Lyon. As there were only six present, they elected to remain in the interim as a Social Committee to arrange catering, etc., for the two dances that had been arranged for September 29th and October 30th of that year. Both those dances proved a great success. Mrs McAdie joined the committee in October. The Ladies’ Committee was officially formed at a combined meeting of the General and Ladies’ committees held on April 6th, 1938. Mrs Boake agreed to be President, Mrs Lyon as Secretary and Mrs Rains as Assistant Secretary. Other members included Mrs Browne, Mrs Forde, Mrs Jarrold, Mrs Bradbury and Mrs Taylor. By 1941 their numbers had grown to include Matron Wilson, and Mesdames Andrew, Brinkkotter, Cloney, Walker, Parsons, Crick, Ballenger, Travena, Hurst, Shields and Le Brocq . A number of these ladies eventually became part of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Eltham War Memorial Trust. Councillor A. Brinkkotter, secretary of the Hall Committee, noted that Eltham had succeeded, after many long years of fighting, in erecting a new hall and civic centre which had been badly needed. “It took a long time to convince the Council of the necessity for a new hall and civic centre in Eltham.” “The councillors, in looking after the interests of all sections of the rate payers, could not see that such a move was necessary. But finally the Hall Committee proved that such a move was not only advisable, but would prove a financial asset to the Shire.” “This committee had to put down £1,500 in cash before the work on the hall began, and to enable the committee to do this, residents loaned them money free of interest for 12 months. In addition the committee has guaranteed to pay the Council £100 a year for the next ten years.” “The borrowed money has to be repaid to the lenders, and I hope that the public will realise this and support the functions which have been and will be arranged by the Hall Committee to enable them to return the money as soon, as possible.” At the opening gala for the Public Hall, Mr. G. L. Chandler, M.L.C. said “It speaks volumes for those people who have worked for many years for the hall. I know of no other place where the residents have handed over £1,500 for the erection of a hall and guaranteed the balance of the cost. You will always find the few who say ‘Time is not opportune.’ In these days you have to make your opportunities.” “Before any town can advance, a civic spirit must exist in the residents, and I hope the people will support the Hall Committee which has the interests of this district at heart.”Background workings for the funding of a Public Hall at Eltham. The funding was provided by public subscription and the money loaned to Council to build the hall. The hall was part of the new Eltham Shire offices located at the corner of Main Road and Arthur Street.
