Album full of personal photographs of war experiences for soldier Jack Devlin. Morron covered photograph album with 19 loose pages. Front and back cardboard and leather cover seperate, no spine. Pages held in place by black shoe lace tied on left side. Photographs glued into album on both sides of pages. Total of 103 photos, black and white, 4 photos loose. Each photo has corresponding short handwritten description below or beside it. Album photos range from 1942 - 1945 in locations ranging from Port Moresby, Darwin and Cairns and relate to a soldiers war experiences. Photographs include local people, vehicles, cemetary, bombed out planes, villages. One photo in particular has photo portrait of Jack, serial number VX 142005.Jack Devlin/ 15 Mine Road/ Korumburra/ Vic. Handwritten inside cover. Image is of a horse tram leave the Grenville St. terminus, to travel west bound along the north side of Sturt St. Has many pedestrians in photo and some horse drawn vehicles. Shows the position of the horse tram track in Sturt St., north side, was not up against the south side kerb. Postcard has a Christmas message on the base of it. A4 folded pamphlet, brochure, titled "Ballarat's Horse Trams" produced originally for the October 1994 CHHA exhibition at the Ballarat Drill Hall at which the Horse tram was displayed outside. Printed by a laser printer on A4 paper - yellow - featuring a vertical photo of the horse tram near Windmill Drive North, unloading the body of No. 1 in 1985 at the depot and inaugural running in 1992. Also has a membership application form for the BTM. Gives a brief history of the horse trams in Ballarat and the reconstruction of the vehicle itself. Was also produced for handing out to the public at the depot. Produced by Warren Doubleday. See Reg Item 6217 for the 2015 version. Newspaper clipping from The Courier, 20/3/1963, titled "Bluebirds cause keen excitement in the city", recording the passing of the convoy of Donald Campbell's Bluebird car and speedboat through Ballarat and stopping outside the Town Hall. Photo has tramcar 14 and a bogie tram in the background. Donald Campbell himself was unable to attend. Bluebird was one the motor vehicle used in the land world speed record attempts of the era. Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Functional object - Run Number Plate, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), Malvern M74, 1960's to 1970's
Pressed metal plate with corners trimmed and rounded, top section partly folded with two slotted holes, four with sides folded to give strengthening to the plate, painted with a white background and the letter "M" and numbers painted in red, to give a Run Number Plate for Malvern Depot. Painted with the same detail on either side of the plate. Used by Malvern Depot until they were phased out and replaced with the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring system c1990. Used to identify the depot and "run number" or timetable that the tram was running on, two in each tram, to enable monitoring by inspectors and crews. They looked very similar to the U vans of the Broad Gauge, although two photographs[1][2] of NUU 1 show that its body may have been white for some time. NU In 1926 the class was relettered to simply NU, with no changes to numbers. NU 4 was scrapped in 1938, but otherwise the class remained intact until 1954, when seven members (2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12) were sold to Coulston & Hyder, who dispersed the wagons among locations on the Wangarrata to Whitfield line. As of 1996, vans 7 and 12 were at Moyhu, while van 11 was destroyed by fire in 1978. Wagons 6 and 1 were scrapped in 1957 and 1958 respectively, while in 1954 van 13 was recorded as being sold to the Puffing Billy Preservation Society. In 1977, the remaining vans 3, 10 and 14 were handed over to the Emerald Tourist Railway Board, and removed from Victorian Railways records. The Puffing Billy Railway now posesses vans 3, 8, 10, 13 and 14. 1998 -01/10: chartered to the UK "Maritime & Coastguard Agency" as 'Emergency Towing Vessel' (EVT), based at Stornoway Inclinometer from the ship The Brisbane Trader, the sister ship to the Sydney Trader. Called a "roll on- roll off" vessel, the radical design for the time carried vehicles and containers on deck. The shallow draught allowed the ship access to smaller Australian coastal ports. The officers and crew enjoyed improved accommodation. Built and completed December 1969 by Evans Deakin and co. pty ltd. of Brisbane, they were also the owner. Twin Screw. Diesel Engine. Speed 17.5 knots. 6,236 gross tons, 2,961 net. 4,422 dwt. lbd: 448'5"x70'"7x2-'"3 Broken up at Kaohsiung November 1984. The Engineering business of Evans Deakin and Co. was established in 1910 by Daniel Evans and Arthur Deakin. A shipyard was built at Kangaroo Point where 81 ships were constructed between 1940 and 1971. THe Business was taken over by Downer Holdings Pty Ltd in 2001. 12 NBH, Passenger Carriage - Excursion Car, 1976
12NBH - Excursion Car Replica body built by Puffing Billy Preservation Society, Emerald - 1976. Puffing Billy Service History or Notes May 2016 - Lifted NBH SECOND-CLASS EXCURSION CAR. The H was recognising their use for "Holiday" traffic. 15 of these cars were built in 1919 and numbered 1-15. Two more were built in 1981, and numbered 16 & 17. Two extended versions for wheelchair passengers were built in 1981 & 1983. These were numbered 51 & 52 - a separate number series due to the different type of vehicle. Six, numbered 18-23, were built in 1997-98. These had steel frames, padded seats, and a wide "window sill". At first glance they look the same as the previous NBHs. Although the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme was first proposed in 1911, construction did not commence until 1938. As part of the push to cut electricity costs and diversify supply, the Victorian Government (circa 1930) initiated the conversion from primarily brown coal supply to hydro – electricity. Field investigations during the 1940’s resulted in a new proposal for a scheme that had more than double the capacity of the 1938 scheme. The Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme became the largest scheme of its kind in the State Of Victoria and the second largest scheme in Australia. The number of personnel involved in the planning and construction of the scheme increased dramatically. During the late 1940’s, most activity centred around the construction of the West Kiewa Power Station, Rocky Valley Reservoir, McKay Creek Power Station and the Bogong Creek Aqueduct.A common thread across all the larger hydro scheme constructions was the need for workers, both qualified and unqualified who came from around the world seeking a new life for themselves and their families. New accommodation and facilities were required for the army of workers engaged in construction in often remote and wild areas. The SEC had a high demand for timber, and set up the first of a number of sawmills at Bogong Creek in 1939 and set up the first hardwood logging in the headwaters of the Kiewa River. These new ‘towns’ such as Mt Beauty and Bogong, survived, serving the needs of operational personnel and their families, and expanding with growth of new industries. Mount Beauty, and to a lesser extent Bogong, are among these places. Book - LYDIA CHANCELLOR COLLECTION: ADAM LINDSAY GORDON COTTAGE FOLK MUSEUM
A small soft covered book with coloured illustrations titled 'Adam Lindsay Gordon Cottage Folk Museum.' Dendy Park, Brighton, Victoria, Australia. Brighton City Council and the Brighton Historical Society, with the support of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) are co-operating in a project which will honour the poet Adam Lindsay Gordon. One hundred years after his death they will link this project with the early Australian pioneers. This project will feature - the Gordon Cottage, horse drawn vehicle displays, relic displays, early market garden displays, and an old fashioned shop. An Aboriginal midden will be reconstructed and a collection of Aboriginal artefacts will be included. An appeal for the project was officially launched on the 25th May, 1969. Yields information about the way the SEC repair overhead failures on the Ballarat Tramway system - shows the trucks and the crews involved.Black and White copy photograph of a newspaper photograph taken by The Courier of repairs to damaged overhead wire, Lydiard St North, just to the north of the Railway level crossing. Tram services were disrupted as a result. Photo taken 23/4/1965, published 24/4/1965. Shows three SEC vehicles in use, including the tower truck. By the front of the truck, the overhead wire and a set of ears can be seen. The Victorian Railways Institute building is in the background. In the far background is the North Star hotel. Yields information about Ballarat 's first trams - electric trams towing trailers. Better sources of image held within files. Shows crowded nature of the tram,Copy negative of a black and white photograph from Ray Pearson Collection, taken by Dave Macartney in 1975c of f an ESCo tram towing a heavily loaded ex horse tram as a trailer, eastbound along the north side of Sturt St. with the Town Hall in the background. Many people and a number of horse drawn vehicles in the photograph. Photo taken soon after opening it would appear, as a destination box on the electric tram is not visible. Photocopy of an article in the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Magazine, Contact, Vol 2, No. 2, Aug 1937 titled "The Commission visits Ballarat". The single page item details the visit of the SEC Commissioners to Ballarat 16/7/1936. Gives a list of the people from the SEC who visited. Met with Council, explained the purpose of the SEC - "not for profit". Visited the operations of the SEC in Ballarat, tramway works under the supervision of R. H. Meakin and a visit to Electra Hall. Features a photo of a line up of 21 motor vehicles outside the Ballarat Power House. Record revised 3/4/2019 to add digital images with those from Andrew Cook CD. Photo has two trams east bound in the photo, along with a few motor vehicles. In the photo are a street side Garage, a bakery, Golden City Hotel, Town Hall, St. Patricks Church and Harry Davies & Co.
