Frederick Henry Stevens (1861 - 22/1/1931) Frederick was the son of Thomas and Margaret Wiseman. He was a cooper at the Kent Brewery Company in Bendigo. He was an early member of the City Fire Brigade and was their lieutenant in 1886 when the brigade presented him with a crockery set to mark the occasion of his recent marriage to Elizabeth Jane Hills. Rev Alexander W. Bray founded the Methodist Order of Knights in 1914, when he was a Sunday School teacher at Hurstville. He was later ordained and was stationed at: 1924 Barraba; 1925 Far West Mission; 1928 Rylstone; 1931 Goulburn; 1936 Lower Blue Mountains; 1940 Waratah-Broadmeadow; 1945 Annandale; 1952 Nowra; 1956 Boorowa; 1961 Dural. Nornie GUDE (1915-2002) Eleanor Constance (Nornie) Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leading musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. In 1936 Nornie Gude was studying at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and the National Gallery Drawing School in Melbourne. She won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. As an artist Nornie Gude held no theories and was once heard to say, “You spend your first 20 years learning technique and the next 20 years losing it”. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. These bottles come from the Warrnambool aerated waters business of Reg Reeves. A cordial factory was established in Koroit Street, Warrnambool by John Davis and this business was taken over in the 1880s by John Fletcher. Ralph Reeves, who had been involved in the cordial making business in Warrnambool since 1900, bought the Koroit Street business in 1931. His son Reginald John acquired the business in 1946 and was actively involved until his death in 1972. The factory continued until the 1908s. These bottles are of interest as they come from the Warrnambol aerated waters business of Reginald John Reeves. The Reeves cordial factory was prominent in Warrnambool for over 40 years. Cordial manufacturing in Warrnambool was an important industry for over 100 years. These are two clear glass bottles (one has been slightly discoloured inside from the contents). They have a rounded base with a rounded body tapering to a smaller neck. The openings at the top have a lip of moulded glass. The name of the aerated waters manufacturer is impressed into the side of the bottle. This plate comes from the Commercial Hotel in Warrnambool. This hotel, situated on the north west corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, Warrnambool, was established in 1865. It was built by Thomas Mickle and the first licensee was Charles Anderson. From 1928 on the O’Dwyer family was associated with the Commercial Hotel, either as licensees or owners, for fifty years. The plate would have been first used during the times when Patrick O’Dwyer was the licensee – 1928-1931 and 1932 to 1934. Today the Commercial Hotel still trades as the Whalers Hotel.This plate is of interest as it is a memento of the 1920s and 30s when Patrick O’Dwyer was the licensee of the Commercial Hotel. This hotel, trading today as the Whalers Hotel, is the oldest hotel in Warrnambool and a prominent landmark in the city. This is a white china plate (dinner plate size) with the inner section slightly recessed. The plate has a black line around the outer rim and initials and a hotel name in a scroll pattern on one outer edge. Dr James Kerr practised medicine in Orbost from 1889 -1928. He was the first doctor to settle in Orbost. He served the Orbost community for 40 years travelling everywhere on horseback. He married Hilda Constance Temple in Orbost on November 30, 1893. On April 29th 1931, three glass windows were dedicated to "Dr James Kerr. Beloved Physician of Orbost" in St James Church of England , Orbost. He was an integral part of the Orbost community for over 40 years. This plaque was at his house where he had his surgery. The house no longer exists. Wal Jack had an extensive range of correspondents throughout Australia and the world who often provided him with detailed drawings and notes on various tramway systems. This set of notes on the Napier NZ tramway system provides details of the tram system and a list of the rolling stock. Notes that the system was destroyed by an earthquake, but he did not know the opening and closing dates at the time of preparation. The reference states that the system operated from 1913 to 1931. Based on the handwriting, prepared by Wal Jack himself. This portrait photograph of Dame Mary Herring is a visual record of her taken during the time she was offering advice to Melbourne District Nursing Society After-Care Home (later Hospital)' as a member of their Committee from 1931. She was a Vice-president from 1943-1957 and acted as President in 1953. As a Medical practitioner she was involved with the formation of the MDNS After-Care Ante-Natal clinic in 1930 and the establishment of the Women's Welfare Clinic at the MDNS After-Care in 1934. Dame Mary Herring was born in Carlton on the 31st of March 1895. She graduated as a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB. BS) at the University of Melbourne in March 1921. During her training she went out with the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), where she visited many in poor circumstances and through this decided she wanted to improve the lives of women and children. She married Edmund Herring on the 6th of April 1922 and he supported her to continue her Medical career. She established an Ante-Natal Clinic at the Prahran Health Centre in 1926 and assisted MDNS After-Care Home in the establishment of its Ante-Natal clinic in September 1930. In 1931, as Dr. Mary Herring she became a member of the Committee of the now named ‘Melbourne District Nursing Society After-Care Home’ (later Hospital), and as Lady Herring became a Vice-president from 1943 until 1957 and acted as President in 1953. In 1934, along with Dr. George Simpson and Dr. Victor Wallace, she established the Women’s Welfare Clinic at the MDNS After-Care Hospital for patients of the Society; the first of its kind in Melbourne. After its opening in October 1934 she was the Hon Secretary of the Welfare Clinic, which operated from a room in the Ante-Natal Clinic of the After-Care. Dr. Herring pioneered family planning services. The clinic ran until 1940 when women could now obtain this advice from other establishments. In 1953, as Acting President, Lady Herring was involved with the discussions of the District Division of MDNS relocating to ‘Airlie’, 452 St. Kilda Road, Melbourne and the separation of Melbourne District Nursing Society and After Care Hospital, with the District Division now a separate entity, known as Melbourne District Nursing Service with its Headquarters at 452 St. Kilda Road, Melbourne. In 1966 with Royal patronage, this became the Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS). Though asked to be President of the Hospital division of the MDNS Society, she declined due to her many activities. In 1940 Dr. Mary Herring was a founder of the A.I.F Women’s Association and served on the Women’s Welfare Subcommittee to assist the families of soldiers and now as Lady Herring, she became President from 1943-1946. She was a a founding member and first president of the Victorian Council of Social Service 1946, chairman of the Vera Scantlebury Brown Memorial Trust 1946-1979, Deputy-president of Victorian division of the Australian Red Cross 1944-1963, and of the Victoria League 1945-1972 and the Australian council of the Save the Children Fund from 1962-1967. Lady Herring was a tireless worker for many charities particularly charities for children. On the 10th of July 1953 she was made Commander of the Order of St. John in recognition of her charity work and on the 11th of June 1960 was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for “services to nursing in Victoria” In 1949 the Argus Newspaper (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/22776603) described her as “one of the finest examples of Australian women in our State, with a record of selfless devotion to the service of others. Calm, kindly, clear-minded, and intensely logical”,..... “she has taken all this in her stride without once stopping out of her aura of cool, unruffled efficiency, an efficiency which is tempered by her warmth and understanding, her approachability, and her human sympathy.” Dame Mary Ranken Herring died in Camberwell on the 26th of October 1981. Only a portion of her scooped neck dark coloured frock which falls in soft folds can be seen. There is a light colour brooch attached on the left hand side of her frock near the shoulder. Kitty (Catherine) Sandow and Joyce Rowe grew up in Linton and attended Linton State School. Kitty Sandow (1916-1984) married Reg Jennings in 1946. Joyce Rowe (1912-1997) married Mick (Martin) Chung in 1931. Kitty and Reg took over the management of Kitty's parent's grocery and confectionery shop, which then became known as "Jennings' Milk Bar". Mary Ann Craddock married David George Knott (1894-1948) in 1923. He was born at Lockwood. The following from the electoral rolls:- 1. 1925 David and Mary Ann were living at the Olive Branch Hotel in Mitchell Street and both are listed as furriers; 2. In 1931 Mary Ann is living in Eadie St. and David is listed at 121 Wattle Street, again both furriers. 3. 1937 both are living at 123 Wattle St. but Mary Ann is now listed as home duties. 4. 1942 Both are living in Spring Gully Road where David died in 1948 before he is buried at the Bendigo cemetery. NB. Both 121 and 123 Wattle St. are very big homes, possibly boarding houses at the time. In 1923 their shop was situated in the Lansell building on the corner of Mitchell and Hargreaves St. It was on the upper floor and all stock was destroyed in a fire. In 1931 the address for their business is listed as Mitchell Street. Earlier in 1915, in the NSW Police Gazette, David was listed as a deserter from the army but no army records have been found. These badges all marked W.R.C. appear to come from the Warrnambool Racing Club. The first race meeting in Warrnambool was held in 1848 at Jetty Flat. The first meeting at the present race course was held in 1858 with Warrnambool Racing Club established in 1873.The main event in Warrnambool horse racing today is the May Racing Carnival which features the Grand Annual Steeplechase. It has 33 jumps, the most hurdles of any race in the world over 5,500 metres. This book was awarded to William Kerr Paterson for English Subjects as first prize in the fifth form in 1894. William enrolled in Ballarat College in 1891 (D.O.B. 5/11/1876). In the original register it lists parent/guardian as John Paterson, contractor, residing at 12 Errard Street South. It also states that previous school was SS.33, [subsequently known as Dana Street P.S]. William's brother David McMurtrie enrolled in the college in 1886 at the age of 14.Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Many of the prizes given in early years were returned to the school to equip the Weatherly Library when it opened in 1936.Bound in brown calf with college crest embossed on front cover.
