Letter dated 10 March 1943 to the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works about the retention of an internal water closet at 1267 Burke Road, Kew (Holmbush). Legacy accepted responsibility for any trouble which may arise through this fitting which was not directly supplied from a Storage Tank. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. All documents have rounded corners. .1 - Memorandum on SEC paper, light green sheet, dated 18/7/1962 from the Engineer and Manager of the SEC to the Manager Ballarat Branch, regarding the Courier's reports and the Parliamentary report. .2 - Memorandum on a green sheet forwarding Press cuttings and the Work's Superintendent's report re the derailment. .3 - Handwritten report dated 4/7/1962 re the derailment, three sheets on ruled paper, cause of the derailment, works to repair, derailment of 36 at the same location on 3/7 (twice), trackwork issues, track repairs being undertaken and comments re The Courier's reporting. Has an ESCo tram southbound in Lydiard St North, a motor car and several horse-drawn vehicles. Shows the verandahs along Lydiard St, centre poles, and looks towards a rather desolate Black Hill following extensive mining works. The Post Office time ball is in the down position. Possibly c1910. From information provided by the Bus and Coach Society of Victoria: "The bus outside Foys belongs to Lew Page who was one of the multiple operators on Route 1 in 1950 ( he also had one bus on Route 2) which was four years before they amalgamated to form Melbourne - Brighton Bus Lines. The bus is a Reo with a Giles body. Giles Motor Body Works was based in New Street Brighton and built bodies for commercial vehicles but not a lot of buses. Their half a dozen post-war buses mainly went to operators in Routes 1 and 2. Being on Route 1, the bus would have been red and cream." Vahland arrived in the colony. 1855 Town of Sandhurst (Bendigo) became a municipality. 1856 First Town Hall was a small timber building on View point. 1857 Vahland sets up his architectural practice with Robert Getzschmann. 1859 A new, two-storey Italianate Town hall designed by George Fletcher, Town Surveyor, was built. 1866-77 Two-storey extension added to the north of the building to house the council chamber. 1871-72 Addition of the Corn Exchange comprising two storeys and a basement to the north of the building. 1878-87 Major remodelling of the exterior and interior carried out to the designs of architect W. C. Vahland. The work comprised major extensions and the addition of three towers and mansard roof, reconstruction of the main stair, decorative plasterwork by Otto Waschatz (decorated Royal palace, Copenhagen), and council chamber painted by W. J. Straugher. 1902 Painting of the main hall by Coulter and Smith of Bendigo. 1913-15 Remodelling of offices. 1926 Replacement of main Hargreaves Street hall entrance, foyer and balcony with stage. 2000 Restoration works to the Town hall commence. On front cover: buff sticker, with Bendigo Water Works, Crusoe Reservoir and others, contracts 1870 - 1874 written in cursive script. Later writing 'from Mrs. H. Strickland, Bungoona, Currie, King Island'. Written inside is: Presented to Bendigo Historical Society by Mrs A Strickland, Bungoona, Currie, King Island. Also the Historical Society Stamp. The next page has three newspaper cuttings. The first is 'The Victorian Waterworks'. It has costings for contracts for water supply, amounts which will supply water from the Coliban to the Castlemaine and Sandhurst districts, and if the Government should purchase the Bendigo Waterworks, and to construct the Upper Coliban reservoir, additional expenditure may be required. (from Daily Telegraph - 1868). The second is some information on The Yan Yean Aqueduct. The third is a letter to the Editor of the Argus from Joseph Brady, dated August 2, 1870, in reference to repairing the leak in the outlet tunnel of the Malmsbury Reservoir. He says the repair of the tunnel was not essential and is unnecessary and 2nd. If the bank was cut through and restored, for years the bank would not be safe, as the earth used in the restoration would require time to subside and unite with the old work.
