The Snowman outside Snowlands was constructed in the 70s after Mr S K Pearce commissioned Polish artist/sculptor Andy Lomini to create it. Mr Lomini is well known for his oil paintings but also created the Big Trout in Jindabyne, one of the 150 'big' things in Australia. The Queen Carnival was a fundraiser for the Holy Trinity Tennis Club. The Queen Carnival Coronation was held in the Canterbury Memorial Hall on 11 June 1940. Mrs F Eastwood was the trainer and the Honorary Secretary of the tennis club. The donor Mary Holborn married Geoffrey Stroud Clucas in 1946 in Surrey Hills. The photo documents a social fundraising practice common in the early 20th century. Queen carnivals were also popular in New Zealand. In both countries they were particularly common during World War I and in the years after, when they were used to raise funds for returned soldiers. The first such carnival is believed to have been held in Napier, New Zealand, in 1913. Surrey College was opened in early 1892 by Reverend Dr Frederick Darling who had been the first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canterbury Road. He resigned this position to open the school which operated until 1905 with additional premises at 12 Vincent Street. The main building fronted 219-233 Union Road. The school had 40 boarders as well as day boys. Courses included algebra, euclid, history, typewriting, shorthand and drill. In the 1930s, Nethercourt Private Hospital took over the site. Later it became St Jude's Hospital. Land in front of the building was sub-divided off in the 1970s. The building is still extant as a private dwelling with York Street, Surrey Hills as the address. This is one of 3 photos donated by Susan Hobbs, whose grandfather Rev. George Edward Downton is thought to have been a student at the college. George E. Downton was born in Avoca in 1885. He was later a missionary in New Guinea and Secretary to the Australian Board of Missions in Adelaide. He died in 1926 or 1927. This photo is one of two that were originally in the Box Hill Historical Society collection. They were transferred to us in 2024. The third photo could not be located. There was also a rough family tree and notes for the Downton family with correspondence regarding the donation but this was not found.Sepia photograph on grey mount board of 15 men and boys. John Thomas Huyton Clelland was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 11 June 1936. He arrived in Australia with his family as a 10 year old. He maticulated from Ballarat College in 1953, enrolling at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1954. At the Ballarat School of Mines Clelland excelled in his studies, obtaining over 75% credit passes. Clelland was also a great extra-curricular contributer at the Ballarat School of Mines. He was President of the Students' representative Council, Captain of the Football Team and a member of the cricket team. In 1956 Clelland was awarded the Honour Blazer for sport and general qualities in leadership. In 1957 he won the Ballarat School of Mines Mica Smith Traveling Scholarship. Clelland worked for 6 months in Kalgoorli and 6 months in Mount Isa and Broken Hill. As part of his scholarship he travelled to Canada where he worked with Falconbridge Nickel processing nickel deposits. After 16 months in the Richvale Laboratory (Toronto) he was transferred to a pilot plant in Dominican Republic. The process was patented in the 1970s. He became President and General Manager of Falconbridge Dominicana. While President he established a foundation to aid in the culture, education and living standards for the Dominican People. John Clelland died peacefully at his home on 15 January 2012 at Savannah Georgia, USA . Upon his death John Clelland's wife, Loretta, informed his 'alma mater' that he was 'so proud of the opportunity which was afforded him at the School of Mines in Ballarat.' The University of Ballarat is proud to include John Clelland on our alumni roll.Four pages handwritten in blue ballpoint pen. This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. Arundel was built by Julian Newton-Brown who arrived at Falls Creek in 1957. He had studied Pharmacy at Melbourne University. After developing a love for the mountains, Julian moved to Mt. Beauty and then Falls Creek. He worked for the SEC in the test laboratory at Rocky Valley reading weather instruments. By working several jobs, Julian was able to build a small lodge of 10 beds named “Arundel”, located at 18 Slalom Street, Falls Creek. The lodge is now the “Elk at Falls”. It recognises his participation at the Winter Olympic Games in Albertville in 1992 where he was the team psychologist. 23 Australian athletes competed, participating in alpine skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh, cross-country skiing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, luge, short track speed skating, and speed skating. Steven Lee and Adrian Costa from Falls Creek were included in this team. The Men's Downhill competition of the Albertville 1992 Olympics in which Steve Lee competed was held at Val d'Isère on Sunday, 9 February 1992. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. In 1952 Orest “Ory” Frueauf entered into a business partnership with Cecil Dobson, running the general store “Whitehaven” and Post Office at Falls Creek. They extended their business by adding accommodation turning Whitehaven into one of the best commercial lodges at Falls Creek. Ory and Cecil dissolved their business partnership in 1963 and Ory went on to build a new lodge called “Snowhaven” at the site of the present day Frueauf Village, Falls Creek. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. "The Australian Ski Year Book" was first published in 1928 by the Kosciusko Alpine Club and the Ski Club of Australia, which with the Kiandra Ski Club, were the oldest organisations for skiing in Australia. In later years organisations from Victoria, Tasmania and New Zealand were included. It was published on behalf of N.S.W. Ski Council, Ski Club of Victoria, Ski Council of Tasmania, Ski Council of the Federated N.Z. Mountain Clubs. It aimed to provide an annual record of the sport of ski running in Australia, and of events elsewhere which would be of interest to Australian ski enthusiasts. This edition includes an article about the first "Ski for Light" event held at Falls Creek in September 1980. It took the form of a week of cross-country ski instruction for blind and partially-sighted skiers. The week was organised by Peter Rickards (Recreation Officer at the Association For The Blind in Melbourne). During the week, the participants were introduced to track skiing and touring without tracks, as well as some aspects of downhill technique. Peter Rickards said that the value of good tracks was clearly demonstrated because although bad weather persisted throughout the week, the tracks cut by the Falls Creek Management Committee had made it possible for the partially-sighted skiers to ski unassisted. Coaching was provided by Peter Beckman, with the able assistance of several physical education students from the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Peter Rickards described the week as "most successful" and said plans were being made to make it an annual event. Australia sent a team of 27 athletes to these Games and became the first Southern Hemisphere country to win gold medals at the Winter Olympics. They were won by Steven Bradbury in the 1,000m short track speed skating followed by Alisa Camplin in aerial skiing.
