Photographs of "Barker The Painter" a business that operated in Stawell for 80 years. The black and white photo is simple of the leadlight in the top section of the front window. The Second photo, the building location in Upper Main Street Stawell beside the Albion Hotel. The file also contains an article from Stawell Times - News. Tuesday March 4, 1986, p.13. regarding the closing of the business. Mr. W. C. Barker started the business and it was continued for many years by his two daughter and son till it closed in 1986. Black and white portrait of Frederick John Cato seated holding folded papers. The coloured photo is an A4 print of a painting of Fred Cato in the Canberra National Portrait Gallery. In both photos Frederick is seated and dressed in a suit, vest and tie. Frederick John Cato (1858 -1935) was a grocer, part of the Moran & Cato chain of some years ago. He was born in Stawell and went to 502 (Stawell State School) for many years eventually becoming an assistant teacher. He resigned in 1887 to go teaching in new Zealand. Frederick was a generous man and Cato prizes were presented to pupils attending 502. Stawell benefited in many ways from his generosity. Cato Park was named in his honor. Bullock Team with load of Wattle Bark in front of Cornish's Victorian Boarding House. Corner of Napier& Victoria Streets. Photograph taken in Napier Street, Stawell c1910. Inscriptions on the back of the photo state W. Dunn is standing beside the bullock team but records imply that its Jack Williams with his bullock team. Stan Wathem is holding the bike and standing beside the wagon. Wattle bark was used at Wenl's Bark Mills Stawell. The photograph belongs to Mrs. Dorrie Pickering - loaned for copying. The boarding house on corner of Victoria & Napier St. Obit. Mrs. Fanny Cornish formerly Manuel nee Bass, Stawell News 20.6.1931. This photograph was taken near the railway station. Rail trucks indicate late 1870's, railway opened 1876.Two black and white photos of horses with loaded wagons. Part of dinner set owned by Donor's grandmother Martha Edwards, 42 Husband Road, Forest Hill.Founded in 1851 under the name Hulme & Booth and it was not until 1877 that the name was changed to Burgess & Leigh. Until 1999 Burgess & Leigh was still being run by the family.|In August 1999 the factory was rescued from receivers by R&W Darling and the name changed to Burgess, Darling & Leigh.|As the business grew it was moved to a new factory in the rural district of Burslem. As with all industries, potteries have seen great changes and Burslem & Leigh adapted and modernised.|The business continues to this date.
