Wilfred ‘Billy’ Kent Hughes (1895-1970) appearing to question Bedouin men in Egypt. Kent Hughes was a Gallipoli veteran and later in 1917 won a Military Cross and was mentioned in dispatches four times. He served in World War Two, was captured at the fall of Singapore in 1942 and spent time as a Prisoner or War. He later was made a Knight of the Realm, served in the Menzies federal ministry and played a key role in organizing the Melbourne 1956 Olympics. Badge - Pin, brass and enamel, "Mayor of Caulfield's Patriotic Fund", c.1940
This was donated to the Glen Eira City Council Collection by Ron Fisher. The pin belonged to Ron’s father Syd and has been in the family until its donation. Syd was a WW2 veteran who joined up in Caulfield. The Mayor of Caulfield's Patriotic Fund was established in 1939 in conjunction with the Caulfield Returned Soldier's Club. Members raised funds by hosting dances in private homes and events at the Caulfield Town Hall. By 1944, more than £86,000 had been collected for the Fund.Small oval brass and enamel commemorative pin. Centre oval has blue enamel Australian flag, surrounded by the inscription "MAYOR OF CAULFIELD'S PATRIOTIC FUND". Red enamel scroll motif at rear. John Eldrid, President of Beechworth RSL, interviews Mick about his decision to enlist, day to day life on a naval ship and the experience of the Japanese surrender at Tokyo Bay.This interview of local Beechworth Veteran Mick Scanlan's involvement in the Royal Australian Navy during World War Two is a personal account of a lived experience. The stories are of great social and historic significance to the Beechworth RSL members and the wider Beechworth community.
