This is one of a series of photos donated by Arthur Lyons. From 1907 a cab service operated from near the railway gates in Union Road. It was established and maintained by Mr C Fraser until c1916. George Rea either took over then or set up in opposition. Fred Lyons initially worked for George until he set up his own business. In time he changed over to a motor vehicle and continued his service until 1960. Frederick Adolphus Lyons (1891-1980) was born in Surrey Hills, son of Thomas and Catherine Lyons. He married Elizabeth Ruby Hall in 1918. They lived just around the corner at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crescent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur Lyons was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. The Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection provides invaluable insight into life in late nineteenth and early twentieth century north east Victoria. The collection comprises manuscripts, personal artefacts used by the Haeusler family on their farm in Wodonga, and a set of glass negatives which offer a unique visual snapshot of the domestic and social lives of the Haeusler family and local Wodonga community. The Haeusler family migrated from Prussia (Germany) to South Australia in the 1840s and 1850s, before purchasing 100 acres of Crown Land made available under the Victorian Lands Act 1862 (also known as ‘Duffy’s Land Act’) in 1866 in what is now Wodonga West. The Haeusler family were one of several German families to migrate from South Australia to Wodonga in the 1860s. This digital image was produced from one of the glass negatives that form part of the collection, probably taken by Louis Haeusler (b.1887) with the photographic equipment in the Wodonga Historical Society Haeusler Collection. This item is unique and has well documented provenance and a known owner. It forms part of a significant and representative historical collection which reflects the local history of Wodonga. It contributes to our understanding of domestic and family life in early twentieth century Wodonga, as well as providing interpretative capacity for themes including local history and social history.Digital image created from the Haeusler Glass negative collection. This photograph shows the Protestant Hall on Nepean Highway Cheltenham, which at the time of the photograph was used by the Returned Sailors' Soldiers' and Aimen's Imperial Leage of Australia (RSSAILA). The building facade, World War I memorials, fire station building and road plantation are also in view. The Protestants Hall was built by the Cheltenham Protestant Hall Company Limited in 1886. The hall has been used for a wide variety of purposes; in earlier times it served as the Sunday School for the Methodist Home for Children, and later as a schoolhouse when the Beaumaris School (now Cheltenham State School) No 84 met with overcrowding problems. It was also a popular venue for annual balls and regular dances held by church groups and sporting organisations. The City of Moorabbin purchased the building in the 1920's for use by the Returned Soldiers and Sailors League, in whose hands it remained until the late 1970s when it was taken over by a catering firm. During the 1920s, and right up to the late 1950s, it also served as Cheltenham's picture theatre. The three memorial columns, one from the South African War, one from World War I and one from World War II previously located in front of the hall were relocated when Nepean Highway was widened. This ticket was used in the 1950's to gain entry into the Mount Beauty Cinema, located in the community Hall. This ticket was donated by the person who attended one film shown in this theatre. This was in an era where before the start of screening, the "British" anthem was played and all patrons were required to be up-stand. Sometimes if somebody was not standing the usher would advise the patron of their patriotic duties to the "Queen" required them to stand unless they were physically incapacitated. This act demonstrated the strong bond to "mother England". From the late 1960's onward this strong show of loyalty "faded away" into history.This theatre ticket is very significant to Mount Beauty because it was the access by the Kiewa Valley residents to "big city" movies. This was in a time frame when television was just beginning to be a popular household entertainment appliance. The Kiewa valley was for a very long time "out of range" for television reception and the only form of screen images were attending the Mount beauty Theatre (just like the big cities but on a more intimate level). Just like the city movie Theatres, the Mount Beauty Theatre, was the centre of the "after five o'clock" entertainment hub. This was a time when going to the theatre was a big event and townsfolk "got dressed up" for this special occasion.It was the gathering place for young and old.This thick cardboard Cinema ticket to the Mount Beauty Theatre (cinema) has two distinctive sections separated by a single perforation. One section for the doorkeeper and one section to "kindly retain". The colour is light green with black print. The ticket was printed by RENWICK PRIDE.On each side of the perforation is printed, "Mt. BEAUTY" underneath in smaller print "THEATRE" underneath a dividing line "RES. SEAT" and stamped underneath "F" "13". John James is standing on the staircase. He erected the poppet head and buildings on behalf of the syndicate. He was an experienced mine manager and highly regarded local engineer. The mine was located close to and on the western side of the Newbridge-Eddington Road, approximately one kilometer north of the Poseidon Road intersection. A group of widows gathered at Legacy House sorting stamps. Names unknown except Beryl Billings who is seated. With a group of photos about stamp sorting with post-it note "Stamp Ladies Past to 2004". The widows have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises some funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Beryl Billing was the co-ordinator for many years, she is seated at the table in this photo.
