This tool is one of a collection of tools which are believed to have belonged to the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. English-born Henry Phillips (1821-1896) came to Australia with his wife Elizabeth in 1849. They lived for some time in Port Fairy and in 1865 Henry Phillips formed a partnership with Christopher Beattie and established the Warrnambool undertaking business of Beattie and Phillips. This business continued on after the deaths of the founders and lasted until the year 2000. In Warrnambool Henry Phillips was involved in the management of the Mechanics’ Institute.This tool is of interest as a good example of a vintage tool and as a memento of the Warrnambool carpenter and businessman, Henry Phillips. Attached to the main metal piece is a circular piece of metal with spokes and a wooden turning handle (for the other hand). This book by Carolyn Rasmussen contains biographical material on Maurice Blackburn and his wife Doris. Maurice Blackburn was the founder of the Melbourne legal firm with a business still operating today under that name. Maurice and Doris Blackburn were prominent 20th century independent Labor politicians and community activists, influencing conscription laws, benefits for working men and women, atomic bomb tests, civil rights and indigenous recognition. They had friends in Warrnambool and enjoyed visiting the city on a regular basis. This book is of historical interest as a biographies of two well-known Victorian politicians of the 20th century and is of minor local interest as the Blackburns were regular visitors to Warrnambool. This is a hard cover book of 400 pages. The black cover has red lettering on the spine and the dust cover is black, red and grey with photographs of a man’s suit and a man and a woman. These items came from the Godfrey family who lived in Warrnambool in the mid 20th century. The hat was bought and worn by Barbara Phipps (nee Godfrey) some time in the 1960s. It was bought from the department store of Cramond and Dickson, a prominent and important business in Warrnambool from 1855 to 1973. The two felt hat shapes were bought in Italy during World War Two by Jim Godfrey and given to his wife Joy. They were never made into hats to wear but remain in their original state. These items are of interest because they are connected to a 20th century Warrnambool family and because they are good examples of women's fashions of the past..1 A beige=coloured lady's felt hat with a slight fold in the crown and with a strip of felt around the outside of the crown ending in a single knot. This book was given in 1847 to E. Callender by an unknown person (‘C.E –‘). There is a reference in the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper to an Adam Callander, a Port Fairy baker whose wife Alice committed suicide in 1870 and, more importantly, a reference to a Miss Callender arriving as a ship passenger to Warrnambool in July 1854. There is a record of Eliza Callender marrying Peter McFarlane in 1858. The book may have been a New Years’ Day present or a birthday present or a presentation to someone leaving England to migrate to Australia. This book is kept because of its inscription and its early date (1847 – some months before Warrnambool was founded). Further research may reveal the extent of the book’s significance. This is hard cover book of 320 pages. The cover is dark brown with embossed scrolls on the front cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book has eight chapters, including a biography of the author, Matthew Henry, and two black and white sketches. On the first page is the stamp of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. The cover is slightly stained.‘To E. This is a card sent by the family of Samuel McDonald in 1922 thanking the Warrnambool Club members for their sympathy following a recent bereavement. The Warrnambool Club was established in 1873 as a gentlemen’s club and the Warrnambool Club building in Kepler Street which still stands today was erected in 1877. Samuel McDonald, a Justice of the Peace, died in Malvern, Melbourne, at the age of 78. His wife was Eliza Spiers McDonald. Samuel McDonald was buried in the Warrnambool Cemetery so it is presumed he was a resident of the city at one stage.This card is of interest as it has a social history showing the type of bereavement card used in the 1920s. – a plain card with a black edging. These cards could be purchased in bulk with a blank sheet for inserting the relevant details. The connection to Samuel McDonald and the Warrnambool Club is also interesting.This is a small cream-coloured card with black edging. John Ingram, baker of Research and his wife Ada (nee Key) owned a holiday house at 9 Minifie Avenue, Anglesea. At some time between 1943 and 1949 they relocated permanently to Anglesea. It is difficult to make out the car (registration 155-405). It appears to be a roadster style with wooden spoke wheels and spare wheel mounted on boot. Typical of a 1928 Dodge roadster. The woman standing in front of the fence in a swimming suit, holding a towel and wearing a coat is unidentified. Reverend Alfred Gurney Goldsmith has two memorial plaques at the Mission to Seafarers Victoria. One in the the Mission's club room and this one in the Chapel of Saint Peter. He served as Senior Chaplain from 1905 to 1924 through a considerable period of upheaval including the building of two Missions between 1906 and 1917. Reverend Howard Sinclair Bailey and his wife left the South Shields Seamen's Mission, England, to work in Melbourne to replace Reverend John Reginald Weller who had left in January 1929 to work as Superintendant in London. Reverend Bailey arrived in May 1929 on the ship Cathay. He had been working in South Shields for two years. During WWI, he was on active service with the Australian troops in Egypt and Palestine. Bessie Wingrove (1870-1955) was born in Eltham, one of ten children born to Charles Wingrove, former Secretary of the Eltham Roads Board. Much of the publication describes the Wingrove family. Bessie attended University and graduated as a teacher, she travelled and returned to live in Eltham. Irene Mildred Wharton (1888 - 1983) the only child of Thomas Llewellyn Wharton and his wife Mildred, lived most of her early life in Bendigo until her marriage in 1911. Her father worked for The Bendigo Independent news newspaper as compositor and printer until his retirement in 1913 from lead poisoning. Apparently, printer's ink contained lead in those days, and he had health problems from a build up of lead in his system.
