There are 29 boys, of various ages, in gymnastic gear with the Legacy logo on the chest and 4 men who could be the instructor and a Legacy member. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years, such as gymnastics and swimming classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. According to the article published in The Answer in August 1995 these ladies were meeting for a Widows' Club Seminar at Legacy House on 8th may 1995. The article says "On that day representative from Widows Clubs and groups from throughout Victoria are together for a seminar - guest speakers covered a wide-ranging agenda. Photos of Badge Day in Melbourne's City Square (corner of Swanston and Collins Streets) where the Victoria Naval Band is playing on 7 September 1990. There are statues promoting a sporting event in the background (Commonwealth games perhaps). A man in an old Naval uniform is watching and is later on a boat in the Yarra River with President Tony Norris. Part of a Legacy Appeal Week promotion in 1990. Also photos showing a tank in the City Square and a view along Swantson st with Legacy flags on the flag poles. Can see how much the City Square and Swanston St has changed since 1990. Similar to 00491 but there are slight variations so different years. Two of these photos were featured in the 1990 President's Report that was published with the Annual Report, it identifies the man in old Naval costume as Commander Mike Lehan. The article also says: 'On Badge Day, the public of Melbourne responded magnificently to Legacy's call for financial assistance. Our Annual Badge Appeal raised $470,000. given the depressed economy and hard times within the community, Legacy was humbled by the generosity of the community and donations from Bequests totalled $193,966 and a further $111,000 was received from Philanthropic Trusts and Foundations. President Geoff Webb presented a plaque to the Victoria Barracks Melbourne Corps of Guides in acknowledgement of the contribution of the proceeds of the Victoria Barracks Public Tours donations over the past three year, a total of $11,000 to Legacy in that time. A portion of these proceeds was designated to be used for maintenance work on the Legacy statue of the Widow and her Children in the Garden of Appreciation at the Shrine of Remembrance. More than 1,500 people visit Victoria Barracks Melbourne (VBM) each year as part of the Public Tours program conducted by the VBM Corps of Guides. Guided tours of the Barracks in 2005 operated on Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons as required. Celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of Legacy were held in the grounds of Government House in 2003. Photos include the President David Ford speaking to the crowd and some of the junior Legatees with disabilities. The note with the photos says: "Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function Over 1200 people recently attended Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function. The sun streaming through the picturesque garden surroundings at Government House contributed to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching up with friends and acquaintances that go back a long way. Some had not seen each other for decades and there was much excitement renewing old friendships. The guests were entertained by The Royal Australian Navy Jazz Ensemble and the MC was David Mann from Radio 3AW." See also 00989, 00990 and 00992. The article in The Answer in April 1997 announced that Daryl Somers would be the personality of the year for the Badge Appeal for the second year. He was photographed speaking at Legacy House and with people including Hazel McKean. Hazel was the wife of a VC winner. Also in the photos are Elaine Ward and Lynne Scott who's family had been used to promote Legacy in a 1994. The article mentions the importance of widows helping raise funds by selling a "Card Pack" a small packet of badges which they sell to family and friends. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material from 1998. Australian actors John Wood and Lisa McCune are shown with Legacy badges. They were in the very popular tv police drama 'Blue Heelers' at the time. It ran from 1994 to 2006. The main time of year for fundraising is September when Legacy holds 'Badge Week'. Often there is a celebrity who gives his or her time as 'Personality of the Year'. Examples are Sir Weary Dunlop (1992), Clive James (1993), the Scott family (1994), The Emmanuel brothers (1995), Daryl Somers (1996 and 1997), and Patsy Adam Smith (1994?). Wreath laying ceremony for Legacy widows at the Cenotaph at the Shrine of Remembrance. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The photos shows the widows after a service in the Visitor Centre of the Shrine of Remembrance. From the film numbers it appears to be 2003 when David Ford was president (see also 00615). The Visitor Centre was completed in 2003 and provides unimpeded access for the elderly and disabled to the Sanctuary, the Crypt and the Galleries of Remembrance as well as open space for exhibitions and events. Russell (catalogued separately) as well as these newspaper clippings and photo of Sir Stanley Savige's funeral. The newspaper features refer to the portrait by E Buckmaster submitted to the Archibald Prize competition (00634.4 and 00634.5, page 7 missing) as well as to the book (00634.6). A letter from Mrs Alwyn Drysdale on behalf of her husband Bob, to accompany photos of pine trees planted by him over time in various towns and schools. The trees had been organised by Legacy as part of their Lone Pine programme and he wanted to provide an update of their growth. Since the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. See the Lone Pine brochure at 00593. These trees were planted in the early 2000s. Melbourne Legacy's Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. A photo of a large group of teenage boys and men from Big Camp, January 1970. Big camp was held at Lord Somers Camp for older youths. This is a large group, approximately 27 boys and 7 adults. Another item at 00427 also is labelled as 1970. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with camps on the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring, close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. A photo of Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop holding the violin that is part of Melbourne Legacy's collection (see 00080). Unsure when this photo was taken. Background: This violin was played by VX30301 Dvr Roy Arnel, as a member of the Australian Imperial Force Concert Party, in the Changi POW camp, Singapore from 1942-1945. It is claimed that the violin, in its case was thrown over the wall by a Chinese civilian. Roy Arnel, a South African by birth enlisted on 7 June 1940 at Royal Park, Melbourne and served with 2 AASC Company as a driver. He was captured by the Japanese Imperial Army at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. There was more than one concert party in Changi as indicated on the rear of the violin. The details of the Dutch, British and American Concert Parties scratched in to the varnish. Photograph of Legatee Bob Cowper and another man by displays of paintings of aircraft. It was the launch of Legacy Week in 1990 which included an exhibition of Aviation Art at Legacy House. Paintings were by Frank Harding of Renmark, South Australia. The photo was used for a newspaper article published on 23 August 1990, mentions that Frank Harding had painted over 50 paintings of aircraft flown by Australians and published a book of the images. It was called 'They flew for the King'. Each painting had been extensively researched to capture a specific moment in the World War 2 combat career of various pilots, flight officers or bomb-aimers. His aim was to honour the fine efforts of these great individuals. Unfortunately the artist died a few weeks after the exhibition and launch of his book. The newsletter from July 1954. It featured Governor Sir Dallas Brooks on a carousel horse with a girl on the cover. The president's introduction talked ofvalue of books and reading. There was a piece on the death of Legacy founder Stan Savige and has a photo of funeral cortege. Pages showed news from the different Boys and Girls Classes and photos showcased the annual demonstration. Also photos of the Legacy library and the medical and dental care given to junior legatees. Also an article and photo about speech training by Miss Williams. Photo of mothers working hard at sewing costumes for the girls classes. There was an article about the royal visit of to the MCG and the JLs that presented flowers to the Queen. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War". An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ian Anderson, a long serving Legatee, on 21st May 1987. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Ian Anderson was President in 1964, during which there were 7,000 children in Melbourne Legacy's care and approximately 9,500 widows. Badge Day raised 120,000 pounds. He had also served on the Legacy Co-ordinating Council for many years and was it's president in 1969-1971. Also a death notice and note published in the Bulletin when his wife Gwenda Anderson passed away in 1989 The article was part of an folder about of past presidents that served on the LCC in preparation for the photo board that was produced. The newsletter from December 1958. The cover featured Mr Geoffrey Armstrong making a donation to President Rob Allison. The president's page featured a photo of office staff on the phones during Legacy Week and promoted the Christmas party. There were articles from the boys classes, including a photo of Ron Barassi playing basketball with the South Melbourne class. There was an article profiling Legatee Norman Harris and his achievements. An article about the Girls classes showed there number of classes was increasing - with new Tuesday night classes. On page 7 there were updates from the Residences with numbers of children in each house mentioned as well as many of the past residents' names. Photos of the demonstrations were published as well. A newsletter published by Legacy in this format for many years from 1942. It mentions "Issued from time to time for Private Circulation among the Sons and Daughters of Deceased Service men and Merchant Seamen who served their Country during the War of 1914-18, or the present War" Many articles on the work of Legacy, including features on boys classes, girls classes, camps, the residences and where their past residents ended up. A photo of a family of Junior Legatees in 1961. Legacy provided outings, camps and holidays for children all over Victoria. Country children would stay for two weeks in the city (often at the Legacy residences) and city children were billeted with families around Victoria. The names that accompanied this photo were: The Picone family from North Albury 1961. L-R Cheryl 14, Jenny 11, Antony 10, Leslie and Maria 9 and Alan 7.
