Book, "Mayors Special Report Ballarat Tramways", Sep. 1971
Historically significant for at the time it demonstrated aspects of the evolution of Ballarat Tramways and yields information about the formation of the tramways, the Councils viewpoint and has a strong association with the Mayor of the time.Twenty two page book, produced by photocopying, side stapled and bound with a red plastic binding, titled "Mayor's Special Report Ballarat Tramways", dated 20 September 1971 for presentation to the City of Ballaarat Council Meeting 27 Sept. 1971 and signed by the Mayor, J.A.Chisholm. Note pages 18 and 19 have been reversed. Comprises: Page 1 - map (image 1829i1) - of Ballarat (Ballaarat) showing the horse tram routes in red (appear to have been drawn in with a red pencil). Note the Sebastopol route terminates at Rubicon St. Page 3 - letter to the City Councillors from the Mayor Page 4 - Outline of the "The Ballarat Tramway System" Pages 5 - 7 - Conditions for tendering the horse tram system within the City of Ballarat" Pages 8 - 11 - Specifications and Agreement for the Ballaarat Tramways (horse trams). pages 12 - 19 - Memorandum of Agreement with the British Insulated Wire Company (later ESCo) Page 20 - Copy of letter from the Secretary of the SEC to the Minister of Fuel and Power, dated 10 Sept. 1971 advising of the formal abandonment of the Ballarat and Bendigo tramway systems. Page 21 - five photos (image 1829i3) of trams in Ballarat, including the bogie tram decorated for the Queens visit, courtesy of Mr. L. J. Denmead, Tramways Superintendent. Brown card with two red stripes vertically in the central area of the card, printed up as Australian Civilian Registration (British Subjects) Identity Card for use during the Second World War (WWII). Has form number CR3. Date of printing given in bottom left hand corner as 12.43. Issued to "Denmead Leslie James 133 Glenlyon Rd. Bwick" (Brunswick) in Sept. 1945. Issued at No. 1 P.D. Depot, Ransford. Has two punch holes along the top edge - probably not in at the time of issue. Has signature of holder and witness (E.A Showers) to signature of rear. Gives conditions of use etc. Also has Identity Card Number "V5 M10 B10551" on rear for office purposes "R45/50" and in a column against the letter C "50728"various - see above and image filestrams, tramways, identity cards, second world war, world war ii -

990.1 -Typed letter from Chairman of M&MTB (Robert (Bob) Risson to Mr. John Grimwade dated 18 April 1963, concerning an letter in the Age written by J. Grimwade about Trams and Motor Cars. Written on M&MTB letterhead, with "Dear John" and author's signature "Bob Risson" handwritten in. Has been folded into four for posting. On quarto size paper, with watermark "Loganvale / Parchment / Made in Britain". Gives M&MTB phone numbers, postal and street address and telegraphic address on letterhead. 990.2 - Typed letter from Chairman of M&MTB (Robert (Bob) Risson to Mr. John Grimwade dated 29 April 1965, concerning tramcar design and deputy chairman (Mr. Kirby) forthcoming overseas trip. Written on M&MTB letterhead, with "Dear John" and author's signature "Bob" handwritten in. Has been folded into six for posting. On quarto size paper, with a watermark "? / RAG ? / Made in Australia". Gives M&MTB phone numbers, postal and street address and telegraphic address on letterhead, different design to 990.1, including phone number. Above the "Dear John" an imprint from of another sheet of paper, has been imposed on the sheet - grease mark? about 15 in diameter. 990.3 - Copy of interoffice memo from Deputy Chairman (Mr. Kirby) on yellow paper, dated 27 April 1965, replying to Chairmans memo of 26 April 1965, about the design of new trams, with steps inside the doorways. Signed by Mr. Kirby. Has been folded for mailing. Has left hand edge partly folded in. 990.4 - Copy of interoffice memo from Chairman (R. Risson) to Deputy Chairman, about a suggestion by Mr. Grimwade about running boards and the width of trams. Notes Chairman's view that the policy of running boards was deliberate in order that cars collided with them first rather than the tram body. On blue paper. Signed by the Chairman. Fourth edition of the British Insulated Cables Engineering Handbook, January 1927. Book is full bound in blue Rexene with round corners and end papers, sewn in 32 page signatures or sections. Cover has BI symbol in gold embossing and on spine. Outside of the pages have edged in gold leaf. Printed material consists of 452 pages, comprising many tables, illustrations, specifications and information on electrical products, including overhead fittings of the British Insulated Cables Limited and general electrical information. Set of 8 black and white photographs of the SEC Ballarat track welding truck, Reg. No. 119 341. Truck is a British Bedford truck, model WHG, built by GMH Melbourne between 1932 and 1934. Has a fabric roof, chassis fitted with a tray top body, side tool box, metal frame and covered with canvas, fitted out with a motor generator set, welding equipment and oxy acetylene bottles. Also fitted with a spot light - 'Auto Reel Lite". - See Related Items sheet on truck notes provided by Kevin Oates, MFESB workshops, 4/2001. (Scan of this sheet of the Kodak folder added 15-8-2017 - see pdf file.) 1705.1 - side on view of truck with covers down, except for opening at back. Thought to be photographed at loop in Wendouree Parade on the View Point line, near Mill St. Prints when donated to the BTM were contained within a red and yellow "Kodak" folder. Folder stored with catalogue worksheet. On rear of folder in ink is number "53569" and stamped on the front is number "984" and written in front top left hand cover, "8 prints" and in top right hand corner word "Sarah". A survey of Wendouree Parade on 22/4/2001 did not show the boat sheds or power lines featured in the photographed.
