Each photo has been scanned and detailed. Has a strong association with Wal Jack and tramway developments until 1964 and given their extent it is of particular significance. Photograph taken from Grenville St looking southeast along Sturt St, c1912 Has ESCo tram towing a trailer, ESCo 20 and another two trams in the photograph. Many people are crossing the road. Wal Jack notes - "Original electric and trails, Summer car No. 20 passing bandstand about 1920" - note windscreens have not been fitted to the trams, possibly around 1910. Built around 1841, St Ninian’s, located at 10 Miller Street, was one of Brighton’s earliest buildings. It is best known as being the home of merchant shipping agent, politician and former British naval officer, George Ward Cole between the 1840s and 1902. Following the death of George Ward Cole in 1879 and his wife in 1898, their only surviving child, Margaret, sold the property to Sir Thomas Bent, who subdivided the land in the early 1900s. Ordsall, renamed Southesk in the 20th century was built for John Halfey in or before 1865. The house was rebuilt in the 1870s to designs by architect Michael Hennessy. In 1882 the house was redecorated by the firm of Culls Hill & Co., who hired the artists 'Mr Vandenbrandt' and 'Signor Rizzi" to paint the ceilings of the ballroom and the drawingroom. The artistic triumph was described in detail in The Argus, 30 October, 1882. In 1947, Southesk was purchased by the Kew City Council. For 23 years it was used as a meeting place for community groups.
