This boot was found hidden in an alcove in a chimney in one of the first houses built in Lismore Victoria during the mid 1860's. The house belonged to scottish born George Ireland Skene who settled in Lismore in mid 1857 with his wife Elizabeth (nee Nelson) and two young children. November 1857 George had built the first blacksmith shop in Grey Street Lismore and then built his house behind the smithy's. Hiding boots in chimneys is well doucumented in folklore. Old brown leather left foot childs boot. In poor condition the leather has dried out and the front centre of the boot along the eyelets has curled into the inside of boot. The holes are in tact but the laces are missing so is the tounge. The leather is stained with a white powder mildrew. The picture is of Angelos Lekatsas (Lucas), his wife and three sons. Angelos was the second president of the Society between 1924.-1926. He was also president of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria for three terms, from 1930-32, 1934-40 and 1949-52. Angelos arrived in Australia around the turn of century shortly after his brothers, Ioannis and Andreas. They owned the Lucas Cafe under the clocks of Flinders Street Station and the business remained in the family till the 1960s. A black and white photograph of a family outdoors. The photo is of A.J. Lucas and his wife, Margaret (nee Wilson). Antonios J Lekatsas (Lucas) arrive in Australia in 1886 and was a founding member and of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. He was also the first president, a position he held from 1916 to 1924. He married Margaret Wilson, in 1893. Margaret was also very active in Ithacan Philanthropic Society and was a member of the Women's Auxiliary. This style of milk bottle began to appear in Australia in the 1930s. The number stamped on the base indicated the dairy to which the bottle belonged. Nursery milk had a higher guaranteed fat content than ordinary milk. Lady Talbot, the wife of a Victorian Governor, was associated with the movement that was to become the Free Kindergarten Union in 1908. The Talbot Milk Institute was associated with the Union. It provided free uncontaminated milk to needy families, since many infant deaths and illnesses were traceable to unsuitable or adulterated food. A wide necked milk bottle made of clear glass. These brooches were made by Hans Beck, a German Templer who was born and lived in Palestine. When WWII broke out, he was sent to Australia on the "Queen Elizabeth" in 1941 and interned in Tatura Camp 3. His wife and children were left behind in Palestine. His daughter Ingrid said that although they were behind barbed wire, they were safe. Hans worked as a manufacturing jeweler in Sydney after his release from Internment. He sent for his family on 1947. A 1 x wooden triangular shape with a small four petal flower made of tiny white shells. A metal stick pin is attached to the back. B 1 x wooden heart shape. This item was given to Captain John E D White, of the AATTV, by the Chief of the Rhade/Rade tribe, whose wife had woven it. The chief was John's recruitment officer in 1968. During the Vietnam War, the Rhade would be "recruited" from their villages to work with various units such as the MIKE force led by Captain White. As well as fighting-power, they were valuable for their understanding of the local environment. Henry Henty and his wife Marion Anne Henty (nee McKellar) had ‘Tarring’, Kew built for their family in 1872. Their house was named for Tarring, Sussex, the Henty familys' ancestral home in the United Kingdom. The Henty family resided at ‘Tarring’, Kew until the death of Marion Henty in 1919. ‘Tarring’ was sold to Ruyton Girls’ School in 1920, and the School moved to the site, (now 12 Selbourne Rd, Kew) in that year. ‘Tarring’ was renamed ‘Henty House’ by Ruyton in honour of its original owners.Rectangular-shaped brass name plate for the house "Tarring". This is a postcard from Patricia Boyd, Robin Boyd's wife, from London to her parents 'Gram and Poppa'. It details a family trip with children Suzy and Penleigh in Paris, Athens, Rome (with a visit to Martin Boyd) and now in London (to see Arthur and Yvonne Boyd). It tells of running into Hatton Beck (Lucy Boyd's husband) at the National Gallery. John William (Jack) was the son of William and Mary Sneddon and brother of Alan. William Sneddon was a postman in Surrey Hills for many years. His father James ran an estate agency in Surrey Hills established by his father in the 1880s. William's wife was Mary Sneddon (nee Bird). Jack was born in 1908 in Camberwell. In 1937 his address was 19 Albert Street, Surrey Hills. The photo probably includes Barbara, Ken and Laurie Young, the children of Ernest Lance (Lance) Young and his wife Beryl Mair who married in 1939 and came to 11 York Street during the WW2 years. The donor does not recognise all of the children. Linda Lawrence is the tallest girl; her brother Ken is largely obscured. Laurie is the youngest girl with the pigtails. Date is approximate. George James Jackson and family lived at 7-9 Russell Street from 1900-1950s. He and his wife were manufacturing jewellers and had a workshop adjacent to the house. Their son assisted in the business. George Jackson was very patriotic and hoisted the flag every day. His grandchildren, who lived nearby, were expected to attend on their way to school. A newspaper article from 1977 that shows a junior legatee practicing archery at the Christmas Party held at Government House and hosted by the Governor, Sir Henry Winneke and his wife. The boy was Adrian Childs, 7 years old, from Frankston. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. The five unmarried daughters pursued their interests in various creative pastimes linked with the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.One of the few photographs of Bertha Leviny and her daughters taken together after the death of Bertha's husband, Ernest, a prominent Australian silversmith.
