The original small, pioneer cottage was built in the late 1840s to early1850s, by an unknown pioneer. It was located on part of a 30 Acre allotment that was originally part of Dendy’s Special Survey granted in 1841. The doors and window sashes, (made of red deal joinery timber), as well as the brass locks and fittings, are from the original cottage, and were imported from England. The fire-place bricks are from the original cottage, and are sun-dried, (not kiln fired), and are hand-made. Convict marks can be seen on two bricks. There is a small display of external cladding shingles from the original pioneer cottage. These shingles were hand-split, and most likely made from locally collected timber The nails included in this display were used to fasten the shingles on the original cottage, and are also hand-made. The enamel nameplate, “Colonial”, on the wall of the cottage, was the name chosen for the original pioneer cottage when Mr August Reitman, a sculptor, began leasing the property in 1917. August purchased the property c 1935, for 1200 Pounds approximately and resided there until 1953. He sold it to Lewis Timber Co Pty Ltd in 1970. In 1974 Mr Lewis, a timber specialist, found the dilapidated building on the property he had recently purchased in Jasper Rd and suggested it be reconstructed and relocated. Moorabbin City Council agreed and the cottage was rebuilt about 250 metres from its original site. The cost of the rebuild was met by 'Victoria's 150th Committee, plus a small grant from the City of Moorabbin, and Mr Laurie Lewis donated much of the timber for the reconstruction. Guests on verandah of Bellfield Hotel. Marshall White bought a licenced building from Armstrong (between Great Western & Ararat), moved it to the site of their house and, in 1924 opened it as an hotel. It remained a very popular hotel under many owners until completely gutted by fire in 1967. Currently (2011) the Grampians Motel stands on almost exactly the same site. The second general store in Halls Gap, built by Jack and Clarrie Thomson. Halls Gap newsagency now (2009) stands on this site. Probably taken at the same time as record 253 (as the yellow car appears to be in the same spot).The photo shows a garage and a general store. This store was built by Jack Hemley on the site where Ralphy's cafe stands now (2010). This windowless bark hut would have been used by stockmen who looked after sheep and cattle in the Fyans Valley. This hut was situated at the site later named the Borough Huts. The main building and chalets were built by E. C. Mitchell of Stawell. He was given a 99 year lease by the shire to build his holiday house at the site of Borough Huts. David and May Mitchell took over ownership of the house and chalets. The women in the photo are May and Isabel Mitchell and the man is David Mitchell. The chalets were called "Flappers Roost", "Bower of Innocence" and "Last Resort". The two copies of the photo are taken from slight closer in and are not as clear and do not show the entire third chalet.The photo shows a collection of old buildings.
