The Methodist Order of Knights was the official youth organisation of the Methodist Church of Australasia. It originated in Hurstville, NSW, on the 4th October 1914 by the then Mr and later Rev Alex Bray. Alex Bray was a Sunday School teacher and spoke to his class of the Knights of the Round Table. In 1917 the Order of Knights was officially recognised by the Sunday School Dept of the NSW Methodist Conference. Courts spread thoroughout Australia. In 1927 the High Court of NSW called for designs for a badge and in 1929 the General Conference of the Methodist Church of Australasia recognised the Order as an approved Organisation. In 1938 the Senior Section was organised into Degrees of Sincerity, Service and Sacrifice; the Junior Section into Pages' Degree with advancement to Esquire. In 1954 the Junior Section was reorganised into two groups: Pages 8 to 11 years and Esquires 12 to 15 years. The Knight's Motto: "Live Pure, Speak True, Right Wrong, Follow Christ the King, else wherefore born?" Courts of the Order: General Conference Department of the Christian Education - General Court - Provincial High Court - District Court - Local Court - Senior Court - Intermediate Court - Junior Court . Regalia: All members of the Intermediate and Senior Courts wore regalia consisting of a cloth shield superimposed by a cross of light and dark blue ribbons, and supported by a cloth collar. Esquire and Degree of Sincerity regalia: White collar and white shield. Degree of Service regalia: Green collar and shield. Degree of Sacrifice: Scarlet collar and shield. District Court regalia: Blue collar and gold shield. High Court regalia: Gold collar and purple sheild. General Court regalia: Purple collar and shield. Officers of the local courts wore their symbols as part of their regalia. Alan J. McConchie, a manufacturer’s agent, was elected to Kew Council in 1924, serving as a councillor for 21 years. He was elected Mayor of Kew in 1927-28, and again in 1945-46. During his second term as Mayor, he gained the support of Council for a pre-school plan which was the first of its kind in Victoria. The scheme established nursery schools and kindergartens as an extension of the existing baby health centres. Alan McConchie was active in Methodist Church work, and was one of the founders of the East Kew church, of which he was a trustee for 29 years. He was well known in the district as a cricketer and was a founder and past president of the East Kew Bowling Club. A Resident of Strathalbyn Street, he died in 1945 aged 60, while attending morning service at the East Kew Methodist Church. He is buried in the Burwood Cemetery. Three Cohn brothers, Jacob, Julius and Moritz came to Bendigo from Denmark in 1852. They were followed by their brother Solomon (Henry) in 1858. Jacob (1830-1911) married Rosa Levy in 1858 during a return trip to Denmark. Moritz (1822-1878) married Roschen Ballin in Germany in 1861. Julius (1828-1877) married Rosetta Spyer in Victoria in 1866. Henry (1826-1874) was married to Leah Fonseca.. Jacob, Moritz and Julius began the Victoria Brewery in Bridge Street in 1858, whilst Henry was described as a traveller and collector for Cohn Bros. in 1859. The brothers soon expanded into the making of cordials (soft drinks). In 1866 Henry took up a hotel in Sandridge (Port Melbourne). Moritz moved to Talbot and set up his own brewery before returning to Bendigo after Julius' death.Clear small glass bottle. Early examples of Melbourne Legacy Club newsletters, covering the activities of Melbourne Legacy Widows' Club. Information includes a notice from the Chairman of the Widows' Committee, dates of meetings, possible day trips and theatre outings, and cruises. The ladies were welcome to attend monthly meetings, card afternoons, indoor bowls competitions, outings and tours, plus the annual fete and Christmas concert. The September 1975 edition mentions the 20 flats purchased by Legacy at 9 The Avenue, Windsor and they are being renovated for widows to live in. Two options were presented, an 'ingoing' amount of $5,000 then a week maintenance charge of $7 a week; or on a rental basis of approximately $20 a week. The newsletter was priced at 2c a copy. The price of theatre tickets was $3. Various pages of interest have been added to show different news items. The visit was to officially thank Australia for the support to Great Britain during World War I and to strengthen the links between Australia and the Empire.
