The Museum of the Ballarat School of Mines was established in 1872. The curator in 1882 was Ferdinand Krause. Prefatory Notice by James Oddie). The want of a guide through the technical collections of The School Mines has long been felt by visitors and students - a guide, not so much to those who merely 'look' at the various exhibits in the Museum, but an instructor to those who desire to take away with them some practical information on the natural occurrence and economical value of the objects exhibited. This want is being filled by the labour of Mr. Krause, whose first installment - 'A Descriptive Catalogue of the Minerals' - is herewith represented to the visiting public." Introduction to the catalogue: " The collection is still in its early growth, and far from being a complete representation of the Mineral Kingdom; many varieties, species, and even whole groups are absent. This state of incompleteness will, no doubt, be adjusted in the sequence, and progressive lists issued from time to time. 'Ad interin' the present catalogue will, be found useful to students and visitors of the School. As far as practicable, the classifications of the minerals accords with that adopted at the Royal School of Mines, London. The numbers prefixed to the species in the catalogue agree with those on the descriptive labels which accompany each specimen, and also with those attached to the specimens themselves. On the descriptive labels the chemical composition of the minerals is expressed in formulae usually employed in standard mineralogical works. Students who have note paid attention to mineralogical chemistry will note that each dot over a symbol is equivalent to one atom of oxygen, .... A bar through a symbol denotes a double atom of the base, .... " In 1882 the collection was housed in 33 cases. The catalogue outlines the specimen types housed in each case. Baron Sir Ferdinand Jacob Heinrich von Mueller was born in Germany on 30 June 1825. Ferdinand was a German-Australian physician, geographer, and a botanist. After passing the pharmaceutical examinations he studied botany at Kiel University. In 1847 he received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Kiel University.when he was 21 years old for a thesis on the flora of Schleswig-Holstein. In 1847, he moved to Adelaide, Australia and worked as a chemist. From 1848 to 1852 he travelled through the colony, discovering and describing a large number of unknown to Western science plants. He wrote a few papers to German periodicals on botanical subjects. In 1851, Mueller moved to Melbourne, capital of the new colony of Victoria. In 1853, He was appointed Government Botanist for Victoria by Governor Charles La Trobe. In 1873, Ferdinand received an honorary doctorate of the University of Rostock. In 1883, he was awarded the Clarke Medal by the Royal Society of New South Wales. He published many volumes on the Victorian plants. Many of Australian geographical features were named after him such as: the Mueller Ranges (WA), Muellers Range (Qld), Mount Mueller (in WA, NT, Tas and Vic) and many more. Mueller died in Melbourne on 10 October 1896 and is buried in the St. Kilda Cemetery A green cloth hard cover book. Title and author's name is engraved in gold on spine. This is one of a collection of items associated with Dr Felix Henry Meyer (1858-1937). Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.Pair of plated suture scissors. Scissors have two oval shaped finger holes at proximal end. Approximately two centimetres below the handles, the shaft deviates at a roughly 45 degree angle. continuing on that angle until the tip of the scissors. There is a pin at the bottom end of the shaft just above the blades of the scissors. The blade section of the forceps is curved. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989.A silver-plated Georgen style silver plated floral bowl in its original box. The base is ten centimetres diameter pedestal with a decorative scroll around the edge, it's five centimetres high and tapers four and a half centimetres. The bowl has a flat bottom with curved sides that rise six centimetres to a 14 centimetre opening. The lid has a decorative scroll on its edge which supports an open grid of five concentric circles with eight pieces radiating from the centre circle. Inside the bowl there is an eight centimetre diameter plastic frame to hold flowers. Engraved on the bowl is NORTHEN DISTRICT SCHOOL OF NURSING IN APPRICIATION POLICE EXAMINATIONS 1982. Tribute medallions were presented to all 1914 enlistees from St Kilda by the citizens of St Kilda. Two presentations were held, one in November 1918 (98 recipients) and one in May 1919 (90 recipients). Both were organised by the St Kilda Patriotic Committee and held at the St Kilda Town Hall. Gunner J.D. Cullen attended the May 1919 function. John (Jack) Dudley Cullen was the first person from St Kilda to enlist in World War I. He lived at 23 Argyle Street (now Waterloo Crescent), St Kilda. An electrician with three years service with the militia behind him, Jack enlisted on 14 August 1914 at the age of 21. By 20 October that year he was sailing to Egypt on the HMAT Shropshire as a member of the 5th Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. He served in the Middle East for a short time before being hospitalised with enteric fever and returning home to Australia. After recovering, Jack undertook permanent guard duties at Broadmeadows Training Camp until October 1916, when he went to England with the 118th Howitzer Battery on the HMAT Aeneas. He again returned to Australia on health grounds, this time suffering a bronchial condition, and was discharged in June 1918. In February 1918, while still in England, Jack married Miss Daisy Dawes of Durrington, near Salisbury. This is one of a collection of items received from the practice of Dr Lachlan Hardy-Wilson, FRCOG, Launceston, Tasmania.Selection of five steel surgical needles. Four of the needles are 3" needles, and the fifth is a 3.5" needle. Each needle consists of a thin, hollow tube that is pointed at one end, attached to a circular fitting by which the needle can be attached to a syringe/vial. Between the circular fitting and the body of the needle is a section of metal with curved sides and squared edges to allow for grip. The grip section of the largest needle is engraved with the text '14G'.14Gsurgery

Surgical instrument. Consists of two slender metal arms, joined at the centre, with a small circular knob at the join for opening and closing the instrument. One end of each of the metal arm curves slightly upward to form a rounded point. The other end of each metal arms narrows in the final five centimeters, and cures slightly downward to form a rounded point. The number '59' is engraved on both arms of the instrument next to the join.'59'

The presentation case was produced as a Welfare Fundraising item and could be displayed on shelf or the like; the pins are a very simple depiction of the Australian Armed Services in the Vietnam war. A small but relevant reminder of the range of Australian Armed Services in Vietnam during period 1962 - 1972.The 20mm lapel pins feature scenes people and technology from the Vietnam War. The lapel pins have been created by master engravers. Included is a full colour printed insert depicting the ribbons of the Australian Active Service Medal 45-75 the Vietnam Medal the Australian Defence Medal and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal. Simonton had experience in the local dairying industry having previously leased the Willsmere Park Dairy. He moved the business to Belmont Avenue in c.1899. In 1924, following his retirement, the company expanded to become The Model Dairy Pty Ltd with Arnold Thompson Simonton and John Tanner as its owner/directors. With new techniques and processes such a pasteurisation, the Belmont Avenue site no longer met required standards for processing and bottling, so its operations moved to 191 Cotham Road. The company celebrated its centenary in 1963. A new factory, built in 1959 to a design by Bates, Smart & McCutcheon, was purchased by Bib Stillwell Motors after the dairy closed. The entire site has since been redeveloped.Rare silver plate salver commemorating one of Kew's most famous businesses. The Maroondah System was first and foremost developed as a functional component of Melbourne's Water Supply System. In addition to functionality, the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) envisioned the Maroondah Reserve to be enjoyed aesthetically and recreationally by the public. This souvenir illustrates the realisation of the Maroondah System as a local recreational and tourist attraction in the early 20th century. The Maroondah Reserve gardens were landscaped with English-style ornamental stonework, exotic trees, flower beds and rose gardens. All features of the water supply system became widely celebrated as beauty spots that continue to be very popular to this day with tourists and locals alike. This souvenir is a product of that flourishing tourist trade. These water supply sites continue to enhance Melbourne’s charm and liveability and are now recognised as places of cultural and historic significance.This souvenir item has been curated by Melbourne Water as it represents an important historical aspect of the organisation by demonstrating the popularity of its water asset sites as recreational places and tourist attractions, and although these sites are functional parts of the water supply system, they were also designed to be enjoyed by the public both aesthetically and recreationally. This rare pocket grooming kit features a scene of the Maroondah Outlet and Dam. The handle is manufactured from mother-of-pearl, encasing four steel utensils. The utensils contained inside the kit were used for filing and manicuring.Engraved on the back of the last utensil is the manufacturer’s mark “ELOSI”. ELOSI is the acronym from Ernest Lohr and Otto Stiehl of Solingen, Germany. In 1935, this company was the first to manufacture thin plastic covers for low cost (5-25 cents). The 1888 Centennial International Exhibition, celebrating a century of Australian settlement, surpassed even the grand scale of the1880 Melbourne International Exhibition. It attracted over two million people, but the Victorian government had to spend £250 000 on it, ten times the amount estimated. The exhibition had a distinctively imperial focus, and a greater emphasis on culture than in 1880, particularly on music and painting (1). This item would have been owned by a man with some wealth as the silver hallmarks indicate an expensive purchase. Coin containers were used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a means of carrying some cash on the person and the matches holder was also a common item for men to carry.This item has no known local provenance but is useful as an example of social customs of the past and can be used also for display. This is a silver container divided into two sections – the top part with a hinged lid held wax matches and the bottom section has a circular recess for holding silver coins. This bottom section has a hinged lid. The top part has an indented and serrated part for striking the matches. The container is highly decorated in etched patterns with a space to engrave a person’s initials. The top has a ring with a chain for attaching the item to a chain. The container is slightly dented. This compass would have been used in a school or other educational institution for drawing a circle or part circle on a blackboard or whiteboard. A compass similar to this has been used in schools for many decades and may still be used. This school blackboard compass has no known local provenance but was a common classroom item and will be useful for display.This is a wooden blackboard compass with two wooden prongs hinged at the top end with three metal screws. The other end of one prong has a pointed nail protruding for fixing to a blackboard or whiteboard and the end of the other prong has a metal part around the tip of the prong with a metal screw for adjustment and a hollow part to insert chalk or other large writing medium.
