This book of war cartoons that had been published in the Argus Newspaper is a second volume to "Havoc" (item 00987). World War 2 has almost enveloped the globe and the Allies are having difficulty in containing the rapid expansion of Axis forces. It has been kept by a Legatee as a souvenir and found its way into the archives.Despite the reverses of the allied forces the cartoonist has maintained a positive outlook in his sketches about the outcome of the war. Part of the Laby Collection of material donated by the family of TH Laby and daughters Jean and Betty in August 2014. This particular book is one of two copies acquired together as part of the Laby Collection, the other being inscribed with Betty’s name, suggesting that this volume belonged to Jean Laby. At some point the ornament has been stuck in the book on the first page.This volume is a softcover book with green coated fabric cover and black lettering. The front cover is horizontally bordered top and bottom with a double black line. Minutes of the first meeting were taken Sat March 1th 1916 and the last minutes were held in the Library Mechanics Hall on 5th Oct. 1922. The book is filled with Minutes of the monthly meetings and has threeo paper insertions - a Mont De Lancey Wine List with three wines and their prices per bottle. A second quite damaged paper is: Wandin ? Progress Association Inaugurated 26th Oct 1912. The meeting was held Jan 11, 1913. It lists the monthly meetings and minutes taken up to March 28 1913. The third document, dated 17th May 1928, is a copy of 13 typed pages from the Shire of Lilydale to The Hon. Secretary, Silvan Hall Committee, Silvan. Grassmere is a small hamlet about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool. It is a farming area. The Grassmere Gold Mining Company, presumably established by local people in Grassmere, was created in 1898 for the purpose of acquiring from Messrs James and Mewha a lease of a Cassilis gold mine (23 acres). £5000 was to be raised in shares of five shillings and one shilling each. The Manager of the Company was Horatio Dickson of Melbourne and the brokers were McMeekin and Co. of Melbourne and Warrnambool and Dickson and Osborne of Melbourne. This reef mine was one of several in Cassilis, Gippsland, 12 kilometres north west of Swifts Creek. The gold-bearing quartz reefs were discovered in 1885 and worked to 1914. It is not known whether the Grassmere Cassilis mine was a financial success but the mining operations were impeded by the hardness of the stone in the area. William Robinson was a farmer in the Grassmere district. This certificate is of considerable interest as one of only three items the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has that is connected with the establishment of the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The gold mine establishment was one of the many minor events in the district in the 1890s. This is a small buff-coloured certificate detailing the shares of William Robinson in the Grassmere Gold Mining Company (1898). The certificate has green printing and black-ink handwriting. The bottom section (Form of Transfer) is not filled in. There is a stamp of the Grassmere Gold Mining Company with the words ‘No Liability’. There is a decorative pattern in green on the left margin with the address of the company and the name of the printer. ‘This is to certify that Wm. Robinson of Grassmere is a member of the above-named company and the proprietor of fifty (50) shares, numbering 12651/12700 therein, upon which the sum of one shilling has been paid up, subject to the Rules and Regulations of the Company. A collection of 20 photographs which shows different aspects of Warrnambool. In 1896 Joseph Jordan was given exclusive rights to produce a souvenir booklet for the 1896-97 Warrnambool Industrial and Arts Exhibition. The Jordan studio sold many publications such as albums, which featured local scenes, as well as postcards, and greeting cards for different occasions and portraits The Jordan studio was a significant photographic studio in Warrnambool. They produced a large volume of work which is a useful record of scenes of the Western District and Warrnambool. This Souvenir booklet was a memento of an important event in Warrnambool. These medicinal products were used in the 1900's. Eucalyptus oil was used both externally for Lumbago, Rheumatism, Sciatica, Sprains, Cuts, Bruises and Burns and for all Throat and Cough disorders. McKean's Camphorated Oil was to be used carefully and under strict Accordance with the instructions. Adults to rub briskly on part affected, Infant use to be massaged gently. McKean's were in operation from 1890's - c1960's. The company appeared to have ceased in 2012. Friars Balsam similarly was used externally for Cuts, Wounds, etc. Could be taken internally for Coughs, Colds, Bronchitis, etc. 10 drops to one teaspoonful. The Bosisto bottle probably contained eucalyptus oil.Four glass medicinal bottles: 1. A small clear glass McKean's "Helping Hand' Eucalyptus Oil bottle, with a faded paper label with Trade Mark surrounding a hand illustration with leaves. Unadulterated is printed at the bottom of this label. Pure Eucalyptus Oil with its uses is included. On the back is a paper label with further instructions for use. The screw top bakelite lid is broken. 2. An angular shaped small brown SIGMA Camphorated Oil bottle with a stained paper label of the manufacturer details and uses. It has 'NOT TO BE TAKEN' stamped into one of the edges on the side of the bottle. Two other sides have three rows of crosses as a pattern. The metal screwtop lid is rusted. F1071 is stamped on the base. 3. A very small round brown Rolfe's Friars Balsam bottle with a broken cork stopper. It has a faded paper label with uses and the manufacturer's details. 4. A small blue tinted clear glass J. Bosisto medicine bottle with rounded corners and flattened sides on the front and back surfaces.The flat lip at he opening could have been sealed with a stopper. The sides of the bottle have a vertical joining line.1. 'McKean's 'Helping Hand' Eucalyptus Oil'. It has a faded paper label with 'Trade Mark (Registered) surrounding a hand illustration with leaves. MU100F - membership and competition. 1966-67 winners in "B" Class - Loyal Orbost Lodge.Friendly Societies were founded in the Australian Colonies in the mid-19th Century by immigrants from England who had been members in Societies which dated back to the 18th Century. Like all working people these immigrants experienced sickness, accidents, unemployment, death and burial. They needed help of like fellows to tide their families over these times. So they formed a branch of one of the Friendly Societies back in the mother country. The idea was to make fixed contributions to a fund and when they were off work they would receive a payment. When they died funeral benefits would be paid and the widow and children would be cared for. It was a form of local insurance for hard times. This was a time of 'look after yourself' as the Colonial Governments did not provide pensions or benefits. Peter Johnston was the boyfriend of Iris Dorey, a daughter of the pioneering Dorey family. Iris ran the Quamby Cafe (now Cuckoo Restaurant) and later in life married Ted Woolrich from Woolrich Nursery. Peter was killed on active service during WW1 on May 15th 1918.
