Photograph - looking from Summerscales offices onto the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St during an event, with a parked ESCo tram and crowds or onlookers on either side of the south side of Sturt St. Has a detailed image of the tram. C1909. In the background are Craigs Hotel, C. Marks & Co, National Mutual building, Snows, and the Town Hall. Several horse-drawn vehicles are in the photograph. Also, A. E. Casley Chemists and Beath Schiess & Co, though this seems to be almost printed into the photograph - above the chemist shop. The postcard has been sent to Miss N Sproston of Skeleton Cottage, Avoca. Postcard of Ballarat Horse tram arriving at the Grenville St. terminus, at the bottom end of Sturt St terminus with a person stepping off the tramcar. Has buildings on both sides of Sturt St. in photograph, and one other horse-drawn vehicle. Also Suttons and Richards & Co. buildings in photo. Titled "Sturt Street, Ballarat" in the bottom left-hand corner". On the rear of the postcard, printed are the words "Post Card", areas for "This space may be used for correspondence" and "The Address to be written here" and in the stamp area in a square "Penny Stamp here". The photograph shows Geelong No. 2, built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1911 in its as-built configuration, c1920 at the Wharf terminus, known as the Moorabool Street Pier. The tram line was opened in 1912 and closed in 1940 when the track in Corio St was extended to the Beach terminus. There are a number of horse-drawn vehicles in the view with goods being loaded or unloaded on the ship moored on the right. The tramway was operated by the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. (MESCo). The photograph from the collection of Ken Magor was published in the Sydney Tramway Museum's magazine Trolley Wire in April 1981. The photo caption advises - "The steamship to the right is the Edina, a veteran Port Phillip steamer which was launched in 1854 and was not broken up until 1957." Among the many pressing priorities for Alf Lawrence, the Forests Commission's new Chief Fire Officer, in rebuilding the firefighting capacity after the catastrophic 1939 bushfires was to invest heavily in modern vehicles and equipment. Powered pumps like the trailer-mounted Coventry Climax (Godiva) gave firefighters a much greater capacity than ever before to put the “wet stuff on the red stuff”. Its four-cylinder, four-stroke, water-cooled, petrol motor produced 38Hp and was connected with either 1½ inch or 2½ inch canvas hose for direct attack, or as a filler pump it could deliver 300 gallons per minute at 120 psi. Some of the first acquisitions included this war surplus veteran shipped over from the London after the blitz bombings of WW2. Black and white photograph of cattle and horses in the Grand Parade on the Melbourne Showgrounds Main Arena, 1954. In 1910, horses and cattle at the Royal Melbourne Show were paraded together for the first time in a ‘Massed’ (Grand) Parade. This innovation proved very popular with exhibitors and the general public alike. The Grand Parade continued to be a Show highlight and in 1952, with the inclusion of all horses for the first time, it became even more of a spectacle. Together with the animals, harness vehicles and Clydesdale wagons were included in the Grand Parade. The following year, as a tribute to the new Queen Elizabeth II, the annual show was named the Coronation Show and for the first time floats from various country agricultural societies were included in the Grand Parade. Pair of trench art candle holders made from Japanese type 96, 25 mm anti aircraft gun ammunition casings. Presumably souvenired by an Australian serviceman during World War ll. These used brass cartridges have been lightly etched or engraved with typical New Guinea designs and the lettering "LAE" and "1943-4". The type 96 was a Japanese built variant of the French Hotchkiss 25mm anti-aircraft gun. The type 96 was designed as a dual-purpose weapon for use against armored vehicles and aircraft, but was primarily used as an anti-aircraft gun in fixed mounts of one to three guns on Imperial Japanese Naval vessels.The cartridges are engraved with typical New Guinea scenes and the word "LAE", one has the date "1943-4". -

Demonstrates the aspect of petrol rationing in Australia during the second world war and the impact it had on tram passengers.Set of ten (sheet of 8 + sheet of 2) 10 gallons Ration Coupons for Motor spirit (Petrol), printed on off white paper with purple ink with the state of issue "Vic" shown. Black and white photograph of a collision, accident, between SEC Ballarat No. 14 and a motor truck at the intersection of Drummond St. North and Webster St. mid 1939. Note debris on road behind tram, showing possible location of collision. Official SEC photo, there are other photos of this collision in the collection. The vehicle is a 1928 Model A Ford type AA. 'Document Pathway' was commissioned for the entrance of the new Administration Building at Mount Helen. The University of Ballarat was renamed Federation University Australia on 01 January 2014. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.In 1993 Iain Reid wrote: "Document Pathway" Celebrating the presence of the University of Ballarat. The composition based on the proportions of a document. The document serves as a vehicle transmitting knowledge. Boarders of the document contain a structured pathway. It is solid in its base and growing aspiring to new levels and understanding. Marks on teh painting reflect an interest in Chaos theory. Through research random order is understood via measured knowledge. Surrounding the inner document lays the resource. A world to explore and enhance through knowledge. This is a set of 13 photographs taken in 1985* during reconnaissance of locations in regions of the Northern Territory. Later that year, Operation NERVOSE 85 was mounted by 4 Fd Svy Sqn in the EAST ARNHEM, VICTORIA RIVER DOWNS AND DALY WATERS areas of the Northern Territory from 26 May to 18 Sep 85. The aim of Operation NERVOSE 85 was to finalise the horizontal and vertical control for mapping at a scale of 1:50,000, to field check 40x 1:50,000 preliminary maps and to obtain mapping photography in support of the RAAF TINDAL redevelopment project. *Note –These photos were most likely taken in 1985, contrary to the ‘1987’ date annotated on the negative sleeves. The Op NERVOSE 85 Project Report available on RASVY’s web site lists a nominal roll of personnel. Photos of 4 Fd Svy Sqn taken in 1985 and 1987 provide names of posted personnel. Several personnel identified in these photos were posted to 4 Fd Svy Sqn in 1985, not in 1987.This is a set of 13 photographs taken during 4th Field Survey Squadron’s reconnaissance of Operation NERVOSE 85 locations in the Northern Territory in 1985. Petrol rationing was gazetted in May 1941. Australia's lack of fuel storage options and the diversion of tankers bringing fuel here forced the government to begin rationing. Initially it was proposed that consumption should be reduced by 50% but this was modified to 1/3 reduction. People had to apply for a petrol licence and this was then used to obtain ration coupons. Initially coupons were issued on a 6 monthly basis but this was reduced to 2 monthly and allowed people roughly 2000 gallons per year. Coupons allowed for 1, 2, 5, 10, 44 and 100 gallon amounts depending on need. eg. private, commercial, farm use. Rationing was strictly enforced until 1942 but remained in effect until 1950.WWII Fuel One Gallon ration Ticket: 4 x beige cards with blue flecks, red print with perforated edges, the four tickets are attached. At the top is the Commonwealth Emblem with Motor Spirit Ration Ticket, under that within a banner is "Commonwealth of Australia". In the middle with a back ground of circular shapes is Department of Supply and Shipping. 1 One Gallon, Valid only until 31st July 1948, Not Transferable. [from contemporary reports:] 1981: 16-18 October. “Pioneers of Eltham” and horse drawn vehicle. This year's festival will be held from 16th to 18th October, with the festival parade being held on Saturday 17th. In recent years the Society has participated in the parade and also organised a display for the festival. We have won prizes for our parade entry for the last two years. The committee has given preliminary consideration to our participation and it has been agreed that we should again enter the procession. This matter will be discussed at the September meeting. / The Society's float in the festival parade again won a prize. This year we won the prize for the best effort by a local group, donated by Bob Clarke's Menswear. As in previous years Peter Quirke has allowed us to use his truck as a float. Peter has formerly operated his fruiterer's business at Research and Diamond Creek and has recently opened a shop in the Eltham Village Arcade. Joh Ebeli, with a little more assistance from other members than in previous years, again did an excellent job in decorating the float. Members of the Victorian Folk Music Club again accompanied us on the float and their music helped create the appropriate mood. A new feature of our parade entry was the inclusion of horse drawn vehicles owned and driven by the Hennel family of Hurstbridge. They certainly added to a highly successful day. In the last issue of this Newsletter we mentioned the award won by the Society for its entry in the Eltham Community Festival Procession. We neglected to mention the award won by member and long-time Eltham resident, Jock Read for the “Best Eltham Theme.” Jock and his horse have been a feature of Eltham parades for years and in particular have established a local tradition in leading Anzac Day parades.Colour photographeltham festival, shire of eltham historical society, 1981, victorian folk music club -

V.R. Powder & General Goods Van NH1 Gauge 2'6" The NH Powder and Goods van was built in 1910. Its purpose was to carry explosives and general goods, Originally classed as NPH. There were two compartments: a 10ft 8¾ inch (3,270 mm) section for explosives and a 13 ft 7 in (4,140 mm) section for general goods. The sides, ends and doors were covered in sheet metal. With the closing of the mines at Walhalla the need to carry explosives ended and both compartments were used for general goods. The doors were replaced with NU type louvre doors for ventilation. NH1 Covered Truck Service History : NPH NPH 1 was built and issued to traffic June 1910. It was a bogie boxvan set up for general goods and the transportation of explosives. It could carry 6 tons of goods and 4 tons of explosives. No doubt the van was stationed on the Moe - Walhalla line. Walhalla was a gold mining town and the rail line had been built from Moe to provide a faster means of transportation than bullock teams from the sailing boats from Melbourne to Port Albert/Sale via Heyfield. In 1911 the van was converted to all goods transport and recoded to NH. NH The van was fitted with autocouplers in 1928. It was scrapped in 1954. By 1968, the vehicle body had been found and was placed into the Museum at Menzies Creek. Body donated to the Puffing Billy Preservation Society.
