Ceramic - Artwork - Ceramics, Jan Feder, Lidded Stoneware Casseroles with iron glaze by Jan Feder, 1981
Jan FEDER ( - 1981) Jan Feder is an alumna of Federation University having studied ceramics at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation Univesity Gippsland campus). Jan Feder was respected by all students for her diligence and technical ability. Her tragic death in 1981 evoked an immediate response from her peers for a memorial. Students discussed a number of memorial options, such as funds for equipment, scholarships and awards. The decision to commence a collection was made based on the idea that all future students culd benefit from the availability of a collection, whereas only a very few individuals could benefit from a scholarship. Students immediately set about raising money by selling 'seconds' called 'Junque Sales'. a total of $760.00 was raised and the first two works purchased were by Victor Greenaway and Victoria Howlett. Ceramic works were purchased from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Gippsland Campus. The Artist in Residendence Program assisted the collection, with many resident artists conrtibuting to the Collection (ie Robin Welch, Anna Zamorska, Sandy Brown), as well as international guests. Ceramic events such as 'Strzelecki Spotkanie 1984' and 'Woodfire 86' also resulted on major contributions to the collection. Placemat with laminated copy of aap-noot-mies reading board (leesplankje) in A4 size, Dutch Australia Heritage Centre, December 2012
The Placemats were made in response to the display of pictures of the "aap, noot, mies" reading boards, which led to requests from older Dutch Citizens for copies. The "aap, noot, mies" reading boards were used in the Netherlands for a long time (from many years before WWII till the late 1960's) as the main tool for teaching students in the first year of primary school the main vowels and consonants of the Dutch Language. The reading boards were used in combination with reading books containing the Zus & Jet stories. These stories are the source of the pictures on the reading board. Item number 6380 is an example of such a reading book.A laminated A4 copy of the "Aap, Noot, Mies" reading board. The board shows pictures of items and persons as well as the spelling of the words and names, for the words: aap, noot, mies, wim, zus, jet, teun, vuur, gijs, lam, kees, bok, weide, does, hok, duif, schapen.aap noot mies reading board leesplankje dutch primary school -

Smellie's obstetric forceps, c. 1750
William Smellie’s straight forceps are one of the most significant pairs of forceps in the Museum collection. William Smellie (1697– 1763), designed these forceps, which were an improvement on the forceps of that time. These forceps were easier to use being shorter and lighter, particularly in the handles, with pelvic curve shaped blades. He invented a locking device for the two blades. The blades were lined with leather and greased with hog’s lard for the ease of delivery and the greater comfort of the patient, this being in the era prior to an understanding of sepsis and the need for surgical hygiene.Smellie was groundbreaking in his understanding of Childbirth and became an influential teacher of Obstetrics. He diligently studied the birthing process, particularly the descent of the baby’s head down the birth canal. His observations lead to him noting that many deaths occurred because of a lack of understanding of this process and the inappropriate handling of forceps. Smellie is generally given the credit for improving the forceps to make them easier to use and less likely to damage the baby. Smellie’s "Treatise on the Theory and Practice of Midwifery" was published In 1751 and became a widely influential teaching resource. Copies of this birth atlas are held in the Frank Forster Library, RANZCOG. Smellie's obstetric forceps. Iron forceps with traces of leather on the two blades. The blades touch at the tips when the blades are fully closed. The handles have a metal sheet coating and would also have been covered in leather originally. There is a notch at the centre to lock the blades in place. Noneobstetric delivery, william smellie -
