Photograph - looking from Summerscales offices onto the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St during an event, with a parked ESCo tram and crowds or onlookers on either side of the south side of Sturt St. Has a detailed image of the tram. C1909. In the background are Craigs Hotel, C. Marks & Co, National Mutual building, Snows, and the Town Hall. Several horse-drawn vehicles are in the photograph. Also, A. E. Casley Chemists and Beath Schiess & Co, though this seems to be almost printed into the photograph - above the chemist shop. The postcard has been sent to Miss N Sproston of Skeleton Cottage, Avoca. Has a 1d Victoria stamp and has been postmarked 14-5-1908. Yields information about the appearance of Sturt St following the introduction of electric trams in 1905 and has a strong association with the work of Sovereign Hill and Rose Stereograph Co.Postcard reproduction - sepia coloured - of an ESCo tram near the intersection of Doveton St. and Sturt St. travelling west along the south side of Sturt Street. Photo appears to be taken soon after opening of the electric trams, as the tramway is well paved compared to the rest of the street which shows vehicle tracks etc. Small horse drawn vehicle crossing in front of the photograph. Shows buildings along the north side of Sturt St. and the building at the SE corner of Doveton St. ESCo tram has destination board on the front dash of the tram. Black and white print from the State Library of Victoria, June 1999 of a horse tram crossing the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Street Ballarat c1890. Tram is travelling east to Grenville St. on the south side of Sturt St. (wrong side these days). Has the Ballarat Post Office building in the background with buildings on the north east side of Sturt St. as well. Has a number of horse drawn cabs in photo and women in white clothing holding umbrellas over their head indicating a hot day. In the right hand side of the photo is the statue of poet Robert Burns. Has number "530" in the bottom left hand corner of photograph. State Library Multimedia Source Catalogue gives the photographer as Charles Rudd, 1849 to 1901, date of photo 1889-1891. Photograph of a horse tram (possibly No. 7), with a Havelock Tobacco advertisement, travelling westbound in Sturt St. on the north side with the City of Ballaarat Town Hall (clock showing 905). Traffic in Sturt St was two-way on either side of the median strip which at the time did not extend fully between Lydiard St and Armstrong St. The photograph includes the gas street lamp in the middle of the Sturt and Lydiard Streets intersection and a telephone/telegraph pole on the right side. Several horse-drawn cabs in the photograph, along with some men. In the background are shops for Cameo Cigarettes, Tea Merchants, C Ekans? Chemist, J T Marsh Hatter, the Town Hall and Snows department store promoting a clearing sale. The photo has been taken from the Post Office Steps, c1890. Many people on bridge, traffic jam of motor vehicles on the bridge itself. Note buildings at the Batman avenue terminus. Can see a tram trolley pole of a tram in Batman Avenue. No curve from Batman Ave. into Swanston St. At least two of the trams do not have route number boxes.
