Newspaper clipping titled: “Smash – right in the middle” The Sun, Thursday, March 21, 1968 The Herald, The Age Photos and text Flinders and Swanston Streets 25 people taken to hospital, St Vincent's, Royal Melbourne, Prince Henry's Accident happened about 12:30 pm when west-bound Flinders St tram crashed into north-bound city tram in Swanston St “Driver out before crash” The Age, Thursday, March 21, 1968 Photos and text Flinders and Swanston Sts Driver, Mr John Middlemo, was knocked semi-conscious two blocks before the collision. He struck his head when a car pulled out in front of him at Exhibition Street. Risson said it was worst accident he had seen in 40 years. Appoints 5 man inquiry committee Tram W2 304 (City Route 6) was crossing Flinders Street when it was hit by tram W2 559 (Spencer St route 28) which failed to stop at the red light. The photograph shows a cable tram set with trailer No. 534 east bound in Bourke St on its way to Nicholson St passing the St. James Building at William Street. The conductor standing at the back of the grip car is in MMTB uniform with his ticket wallet in his left hand and bag visible. The grip man appears to be ringing his bell. There is a side advertisement for the "All Australian Exhibition". Sign - Piece of sheet steel folded to give an upstand or method of attachment to a pole, enamelled with red, white and black paint for use at tram stops. Small red band at top, white band with letters "HAIL CARS HERE" and small red band underneath, on both sides to indicate to drivers a non-compulsory stop. Same sign used for same purpose in Ballarat. On closure of the Ballarat tramways, this car was donated to the Lake Goldsmith Steam Preservation Society and returned to Ballarat in 1983 on loan to the Ballarat Tramway Museum. The Photograph shows Ballarat tram No. 14 with the destination of Lydiard St North most likely in Albert St Sebastopol during the 1930s or 1940s. The tram was in the livery shown from August 1936 until Dec. 1950.
