B&W postcard of an ESCo tram at the east end of Sturt St. Ballarat, with the Grenville St. shelter in the background. Shows buildings along both sides of Sturt St. Has a few pedestrians in the photo and some horse drawn vehicles in the background. Tram in style with destination box/lights at back of drivers canopy. Has title "Sturt Street - looking West, Ballarat" in top left hand corner. On rear "H.J. Summerscales, next Post Office, Ballarat - Printed in Germany" on left hand edge vertically. Post card dated 29/12/10 (1910), from E.H. Colson? at 49 Webster St. wishing the recipient a happy new year. Recipient - Mr. A. Steer, Glen Eira Rd. Elsternwick. As built - Single truck, straight sill closed cross bench tramcar. As recovered - frame, one side roof plus both ends no internal fittings, seats or mechanical equipment. Yields information about the form used in Ballarat and Bendigo by the SEC to enabling ticket checking by Inspectors on the trams.Single sheet of paper titled "Supplementary Trip Way Bill", form No. TYE 1-580, for filling in ticket starting numbers, for tickets from 2d (City Section) through to 1/- value. Also allows for parcel tickets, tram no, trip, route, inspector and punch marks. Has line for filling in date and signature at base of ticket. Used in early 1960's. Max. fare 1/- Item was on display in cabinet of 39 until 10/2004, ex filing cabinet 1992. Two copies held. See also Reg. Item 279. See also Reg. Item 3062 for another sample - 15c max value. Functional Object - Ticket punch, Railway Register Manufacturing Company, 1880's
72 - Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D1335. A heavy nickel plated steel ticket or fare strip cancelling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company. Lock number not known. Has "MT& ..." stamped on one side along with patent dates. 72.1 - as above but for punch number D1338 - added 17/12/12. Functional Object - Tramcar, Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), Restaurant Tram Cuthberts 939, 1948
On of a class of 120 trams built at Preston Workshops between 1939 and 1951. Third tram to be converted to a Colonial Tramcar Restaurant Tram. Of the six trams converted, the only former Melbourne Restaurant tram in use currently (March 2019), trams 4, 5, and 6 having been withdrawn during October 2018.Four motor bogie tram - ex Melbourne - tram No. 939 - One of a class of 120 trams built at Preston Workshops between 1939 and 1951. Third tram to be converted to a Colonial Tramcar Restaurant Tram. Of the six trams converted, the only former Melbourne Restaurant tram in use currently (March 2019), trams 4, 5, and 6 having been withdrawn during October 2018. The tram was built by the MMTB as No. 939 in 1948 at Preston Workshops as a standard SW6 tramcar. It was resident for most of its life at Camberwell, Kew and South Melbourne depots and finally Southbank depot. Heavily rebuilt internally to give a flat floor, air-conditioned, 240V and 24V systems fitted along with changes to bulkheads and position of the passenger door and a goods door in 1994. The tram was converted into Melbourne Restaurant tram No. 3 in 1994/95, being launched on 8-2-1995. While in the later part of its use by the Colonial Tramcar Restaurant Co, it was named “Valentine” during July 2008. It was withdrawn from service in May 2012, when it was replaced by No. 935 (Restaurant No. 6). In August 2014, the Museum received a grant from the Victorian Government of $40,000 to refurbish tram – part of the Transport Investing in Regions Program. The tram was relocated to the Ballarat depot on 29/10/2014. Refurbishment work was completed during March 2016 and the tram was formally launched on 5/4/2016.. The tram is named after Sir Henry Cuthberts (1829 - 1907), the first Chairman of the Ballaarat Tramway Co (the horse tram operator). Sir Henry was a Ballarat based solicitor, member of the Legislative Council, Knighted in 1897 and strong supporter of many Ballarat institutions. A four motor bogie drop centre combination tram of the Melbourne W7 class No. 1029, built at Preston Workshops during 1956, entered service on 1/2/1956. Fitted with sliding doors, Remote Control equipment. See webpage btm.org.au/trams/504.html Spent it appears all its life at Preston or North Fitzroy Depot. Transported to Newport Workshops during 1995. More to come here. Printed from Drawing No. VIX/131/1. Titled "Schedule of Fares and Charges - 26-1-1969". 2nd copy of 704 added 4/10/2015 from donation of Brendan Allan. 704.1 - as above, but with mileages added by the SEC - 26-2-1971 as part of the Transport Regulation Board review of tramway and bus services pending the replacement of the tramways later in 1971.
