"Hercynia" was the largest vineyyard in the Bendigo District. It was started by Carl Wilhelm Greiffenhagen (William) and his cousins, twins, Carl and August Heine. The first vine cuttings were planted in 1860. The partners owned 300 acres at Axe Creek and in 1862 had 24 acres under vines and an orchard of 4 acres. By 1884 they had expanded to 30 acres of vines. They produced many award winning wines. August Heine ( 1832 - 1898) was born in Germany and came to Australia in 1854 with his twin brother Carl and their cousin William Greiffenhagen. Initially the three took up mining successfully but then the partnership bought 300 acres at Axe Creek and planted a vineyard. They also grew fruit and crops to feed the working horses. In 1870 August sold his interest in the vineyard and set up his own smaller vineyard at Sheepwash Gully. He had several business interests before he took up the caretaker position at the newly dug Weeroona lake, a position he held until his death. Carl Heine sold his interest in the vineyard in 1873 and returned to Germany. WIlliam Grieffenhagen (1834-1916) continued his very successful vineyard until the region was hit with a highly infectious vine disease in 1893. Although his own vines escaped infection, he was within the 2 mile quarantine area and was forced to dig out all his vines. He never replanted but depended on his orchard instead. He was a founding member of the Bendigo Agricultural Society and a local Shire councillor for several years. A’ Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles conducted an annual range day at Puckapunyal at which soldiers undertook instruction leading to qualification in a range of weapons including M26 Grenade, 84mm Carl Gustav Medium Antitank Weapon (MAW) and both .30 calibre and .50 calibre machine guns.Two colour photographs of soldiers of ' A ' Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles inspecting the effects of shooting on targets on Puckapunyal Range. Carl Theodore Offszanka (1874-1944) was born in Germany. He is listed in electoral rolls at 44 Guildford Road from 1915, occupation furrier, with his wife Ida (nee Schade, 1882-1963), also born in Germany. They were married in Victoria in 1908. In later electoral rolls at the same address are Erna Helena (b 1913; d 1996) and Maria Eliese (b 1910; m Benedict Francis Rieusset in 1936). Both daughters are listed as typists. Also listed is Bernard George (b 1914; d 1987) who in later electoral rolls is described as a process worker. He served in the AIF in the Second World War. Not listed is Carl Bernard b 1909. The Offszanka family lived at 44 Guildford Road from 1913 until post-1980; they came to Surrey Hills from Richmond. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. It is not known when Carl and Ida migrated from Germany. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. The family continued to occupy the house until after 1980 when Erna Helena and Bernard George are listed in the electoral rolls. First croquet committee in Orbost started up in 1919. (ref : The Whos' Who of Orbost Settlers - Mary Gilbert). Often croquet lawns were in private gardens eg. at Connort (now Moogji). These notes were used extensively in the book the "Wielands of Heathmont", pages 18 and 19, written by Pat Talbot and her husband Don. The notes tell how in 1922 a Railway League was formed with Herman Pump as chairman. The Wieland brothers used their horses and plough in 1926 to help build the Heathmont station. Pat was the-great -Granddaughter of Carl Wieland. The notes also include the Heathmont Information League. Carl Rudolph Braun (1823-1891) was the inventor of this instrument, as well as a type of decapitation hook. Braun was born and practiced in Austria, and followed Semmelweis as assistant to Klein at the Vienna Maternity Clinic in 1847, before becoming its head in 1856. Braud added a gynaecology section to the clinic in 1858, being convinced that obstetrics and gynaecology should be together. (Source: Baskett, Thomas. 'On the Shoulders of Giants: Eponyms and Names in Obstetrics and Gynaecology'). This device was included with a range of other obstetric instruments, mostly destructive instruments, given to RANZCOG from Box Hill Hospital labour ward in February- March 1998. The maternity service at Box Hill Hospital combined with St George's hospital in Kew to be known as Birralee Maternity Service. These instruments were collected by Julie Collette, Unit Manager, St George's Kew and given to RANZCOG Museum Curator, Susan Barnett.Craniotomy forceps, Braun's.
