Galen Catholic College began operation in 1975 but the new college buildings at College Street were not ready at the start of the school year. College classes were temporarily held at St. Patrick's Hall in the heart of Wangaratta until the building had been completed. Black and white photo of St. John's Catholic Church, Mitcham erected in 1872. Two wings at rear give the church a cruciform shape were added in 1888. This building became decrepit gradually and prior to its demolition in the 1950's, the end walls of the crossings were supported with heavy 'flying shores'. When Galen Catholic College was first proposed in the early 1970s, much more building development was envisioned. This artists sketch from 1974 shows the proposed development in two stages. Stage 1, labelled in blue was actually built. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. The Catholic school in this picture was located in Fisken Street, Bacchus Marsh. It was opened in 1863 and operated until about 1890 when the pupils transferred to another school at St Joseph's Convent.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The image shows a group of about 45 school children facing the camera along with two adults. A female adult stands at the far left of the picture. An adult man stands second from the right. A older girl stands to his left, slightly separate from the rest of the group. M.G. Gregor was staying at the Sunbury Presbytery when she wrote a message on the flip side of this postcard to her niece on 23rd June 1912. She may have been employed there as a housekeeper.The Catholic Presbytery was built at a cost of 1315 pounds and opened on 25th February 1912. Father Gallivan was the first priest to reside in the new Presbytery. The wooden church was built to replace an earlier brick church also known as St Mary's (1865-1912), which had been situated on the main road near present day Wingrove Park. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1961. A new modern architecture (1960s) style church was erected - Our Lady of Help Christians Church. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' In 1881 Cyrus Bath Retallack purchased land now known as 1200 Mair Street Ballarat. Retallack was a successful Cornish miner and engineer. He built a two storey brick mansion between 1882 and 1883, naming the property ‘Carn Brae’ after the castle in Cornwall. Substantial grounds were established with with range of exotic trees planted, a tennis court was laid out and a stables building was erected. In 1918 the site become a campus of Queen’s GIrls’ Grammar School, then Aquinas College which was merged into the Australian Catholic University from 1973. The second St Mary's Catholic Church Eltham was located at the corner of Main Road and Henry Street, Eltham and was opened/blessed October 13, 1912. The wooden church was built to replace an earlier brick church also known as St Mary's (1865-1912), which had been situated on the main road near present day Wingrove Park. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1961. This modern (1960s) style church was built to replace the destoyed St Mary's and was called Our Lady of Help Christians.
