The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Associate Professor Catherine Laffey has been described as a changemaker and educationalist. In 1993 she was the ALP candidate for Ballarat Province, and stood as a candidate for the Australian Labor Party in the Legislative Council Province of Ballarat at the Victorian state election, which was held on 30 March 1996. On 18 March 1999 University Council approved the appointment of Ms Catherine Laffey to the Human Research Ethics Committee as a member co-opted from the TAFE Sector. In 2005 she was elected to University Council as the TAFE Representative, and around 2007 the Univesity of Ballarat Consultative Committee. Catherine Laffey was appointed Head of the School of Human Services in 2009. The stadium was opened on the 24th July 1970 by Victorian Premier, Dick Hamer. It was the most famous basketball venue in the 70's & 80's.costing $8mil.
