The postcard was written on by Harry Holmes who was a member of the Australian Imperial Force based in Egypt at the time. Egypt was a major base for the AIF from December 1914. This collection belonged to Sister Tessa Thomas R.R.M. (Nee Youngman) Sister Thomas was born at Creswick 1882, died Brisbane 1948. She trained at the Alfred Hospital for 3 years from 1909. On the 28th November 1914, as a staff nurse she embarked on the "Shyarra" from Australia and served at the 1st Australian General Hospital, Egypt. This uniform belongs to RAAF Squadron Leader John Haines. The decoration and campaign medals are the Australian Service Medal, Defence Force Service Medal, RAAF Long Service Medals and the UNEF II (Egypt and Israel)John Haines was the President of the Eltham RSL. At a later date he served on the Montmorency RSL.Squadron Leader’s Service Dress Jacket made of blue wool polyester blend with a blue rayon lining. At the top of each sleeve there is a woven insignia of the Royal Australian Air force. It has 4 larger gold RAAF buttons and 2 smaller gold buttons on the front chest pockets. The jacket has two pockets on the lower half of the jacket. On each lower sleeve there is a Squadron Leaders rank insignia. Above the right pocket there is silver name tag. Penleigh Boyd, Robin and Patricia Boyd's son, writes “Prior to 1950 Robin, like most other amateur or hobby photographers, took black and white printed photographs. The oldest slides date from 1950 when Robin and Patricia travelled to Europe on Robin’s Robert Haddon Travelling Scholarship.” In 1948 Robin Boyd was awarded ‘joint first place’ in the Robert Haddon competition for his design of Mildura art gallery. The scholarship helped fund their first overseas trip. Robin and Patricia were passengers on the Greek ship “Cyrenia” departing in May 1950, passing through the Suez Canal and landing in Genoa five weeks later. For six months, they travelled extensively throughout Europe (predominantly driving themselves) - France, Italy, United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Spain.Colour slide in a mount. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. Frank Richardson sent this postcard to his family from Cairo before leaving for the front.The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. The postcard belonged to Horace Samuel LONG 'Swag' No 437, 9th & 4th LH Regt AIF seated on the right. The original postcard stated on the rear that the other 2 were Ray Forrester from Gippsland seated and Bob Exon from down Ravenswood way.
