Melbourne Legacy
Document, Intermediate Legacy Club - Report presented at the Annual General Meeting ILC6
Annual reports of the Intermediate Legacy Club over several years. They include interesting information about the activities the ILC were involved in and some include some financial information. The ILC was self sufficient and did not receive funds from Legacy. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. The idea of the club sprang from those boys who had outgrown the Junior Legacy Club. In the early days it fielded a lacrosse team and it was this that mainly held the members together. Enthusiasm wained after a few years as it lacked a solid objective. The answer came from one of its members and in 1938 they founded the Don Esses Club. This was a club for the children of incapacitated ex-servicemen which met every Thursday night at 7.30 run by the ILC members. The name came from the signallers' code Disabled Servicemen's Sons. During the second world war 80% of the members of the ILC enlisted in the services. Leaving only 8 members that could not join due to ill health or reserved occupations. They continued the Don Esses and whatever aid they could to Legacy. ILC members had always helped Legacy where possible including being camp leaders or camp staff, with the annual demonstrations, and coffee stalls at the ANZAC dawn service. Post second world war some ILC members were nominated into Legacy, others drifted away in civil occupations. It was found difficult to recruit new blood into the ILC and eventually membership waned when the boys from the Don Esses clubs found other youth activities to join. The ILC ceased to meet regularly in the mid fifties. However a strong comradeship still existed between members and they would meet in one anothers homes. Members were always ready to help the senior Legacy Club in any way in their power and still helped at Christmas parties and summer camps. ILC was a service rendering organisation and was self governing. Non-sectarian and non-political, the members were ex-junior legatees over 18 years of age. After serving in World War 2 members were eligible to become members of Legacy. Was in a folder of material collated about the ILC by an early archive committee. Document, Intermediate Legacy Annual Meeting 1942
A leaflet from the annual meeting of the ILC in 1942. The evening was for the presentation of the annual report and financial statement plus the installation of office bearers. It was held at the club rooms at 55 Market St, Melbourne. The menu included 'Musso (spaghetti) on toast / Sausages and garden salad / Peaches, jelly and ice cream / Coffee.' It includes a comic drawing of members and humorous characterisation of the members. Background: The ILC was formed in 1929. Pamphlet, Legacy does more than sell badges
A brochure promoting Legacy in the 1990's. Some of the text includes sections on How is Legacy special?; Legacy and the young; Legacy and the Aged. "Legacy and the young. Legacy is committed to the nurturing of its young members, known as Junior Legatees. Legacy helps to make sure stye get the education their fathers would have wished for them and to ensure their families enjoy a normal lifestyle. In addition to the 3,000 Junior Legatees throughout Australia, Legacy also cares for the handicapped dependants of its "family". Recreational outings and educational programs are arranged on a monthly basis. These activities aim to develop self-dependence and once a year, a two-week holiday camp is held - a highlight of the year - and lifelong friendship are often made. / For all its young members, healthy outdoor activities are arranged, financial aid, counselling, tutoring and guidance are given to ensure they are able to make the most of the opportunities open to them. Legacy and the Aged. Nowadays, the Australian population has a large proportion of elderly. The majority of Legacy widows had husbands who served in the World Wars. And so Legacy's emphasis has shifted to the needs of the ageing widows. . . Legacy widows meet for a wide range of activities, including cards, crafts, indoor bowls and theatre excursions. . . This represents a valuable social network and complements the volunteer care given by Legatees."A brochure that promotes Legacy in the 1990's.Colour brochure "Legacy does more than sell badges", folded into 4 sections.legacy promotion, fundraising -

Photograph, Legacy Appeal 1990, 1990
Photos of Badge Day in Melbourne's City Square (corner of Swanston and Collins Streets) where the Victoria Naval Band is playing on 7 September 1990. There are statues promoting a sporting event in the background (Commonwealth games perhaps). A man in an old Naval uniform is watching and is later on a boat in the Yarra River with President Tony Norris. Part of a Legacy Appeal Week promotion in 1990. Also photos showing a tank in the City Square and a view along Swantson st with Legacy flags on the flag poles. Can see how much the City Square and Swanston St has changed since 1990. Similar to 00491 but there are slight variations so different years. Two of these photos were featured in the 1990 President's Report that was published with the Annual Report, it identifies the man in old Naval costume as Commander Mike Lehan. The article also says: 'On Badge Day, the public of Melbourne responded magnificently to Legacy's call for financial assistance. Our Annual Badge Appeal raised $470,000. given the depressed economy and hard times within the community, Legacy was humbled by the generosity of the community and donations from Bequests totalled $193,966 and a further $111,000 was received from Philanthropic Trusts and Foundations. This year were were overwhelmed by the support of serving members of the Army, Navy and Air Force who assisted Legacy as never before for which we are most grateful.'A record of Legacy being promoted for Legacy Week and being helped by the Armed Services in their fundraising .Colour photo x 16 of Badge Day in the city square with a Navy band.Hand-written on paper label in blue pen 'Badge Appeal - City Activities. 1990 7 Sept. Document - Document, letter, Ex-Legatee Louis Vavijinski, 1969
Various documents recording the discussions around helping an ex-Legatee who needed financial assistance. Louis Vavjinski was a member of Legacy in the early years (1920s and 1930s) and gave remarkable service especially to boys' classes where he was an excellent instructor. He had married a French lady at the end of World War 1 and they returned to France after the second world war. By the 1960s he was in financial difficulties and the correspondence points out that he was not eligible for an Australian pension due to living in France. A group of Legatees worked together to raise funds (over £1000) to send Louis, in one letter they approached Legacy President Ivan Layton for funds from the Presidents fund. This shows that legatees form strong bonds with each other and have a desire to help anyone in need. The Presidents Fund was created in 1932 with the aim to give the President a way to help needy cases with discretion and without having to gain approval from committees. In many cases the money was repaid by the recipient. This document was in a folder labelled President's Fund Correspondence and was with other file items about donations to help appropriate cases. The folder was marked with H40 which is part of an early archive project from the late 1960s and early 1970s.The Presidents Fund was a significant help to legatees and junior legatees who were unable to obtain help from other sources.File copy of correspondence about sending money to Louis Vavijinski in France in 1969.financial help, presidents fund -

Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.
Document, Share Certificate
Grassmere is a small hamlet about 12 kilometres from Warrnambool. It is a farming area. The Grassmere Gold Mining Company, presumably established by local people in Grassmere, was created in 1898 for the purpose of acquiring from Messrs James and Mewha a lease of a Cassilis gold mine (23 acres). £5000 was to be raised in shares of five shillings and one shilling each. The Manager of the Company was Horatio Dickson of Melbourne and the brokers were McMeekin and Co. of Melbourne and Warrnambool and Dickson and Osborne of Melbourne. This reef mine was one of several in Cassilis, Gippsland, 12 kilometres north west of Swifts Creek. The gold-bearing quartz reefs were discovered in 1885 and worked to 1914. It is not known whether the Grassmere Cassilis mine was a financial success but the mining operations were impeded by the hardness of the stone in the area. William Robinson was a farmer in the Grassmere district. This certificate is of considerable interest as one of only three items the Warrnambool and District Historical Society has that is connected with the establishment of the Grassmere Gold Mining Company. The gold mine establishment was one of the many minor events in the district in the 1890s. This is a small buff-coloured certificate detailing the shares of William Robinson in the Grassmere Gold Mining Company (1898). The certificate has green printing and black-ink handwriting. The bottom section (Form of Transfer) is not filled in. There is a stamp of the Grassmere Gold Mining Company with the words ‘No Liability’. There is a decorative pattern in green on the left margin with the address of the company and the name of the printer. ‘This is to certify that Wm. Robinson of Grassmere is a member of the above-named company and the proprietor of fifty (50) shares, numbering 12651/12700 therein, upon which the sum of one shilling has been paid up, subject to the Rules and Regulations of the Company. Dated this 15th day of September, 1898. W.J. Roland, Director, .H. (es) Dickson, Manager.’grassmere, grassmere gold mining company, william robinson, warrnambool -
