Skittles was a game of European origin maybe as early as the 4th or 5th century and became popular in England in the 14th century. Many Bendigo hotels included Skittle Alley's and some early mentions of these include Epsom in 1856. Teams could even play for monetary prizes. The recently completed building in the photograph is the Sunbury United Sporting Club's clubrooms, which is in Mitchells Lane, Sunbury. It was built for the local Sunbury soccer club in the 1980s. The "Jack Be Nimble" competition was run as part of Maryborough's annual Wattle Festival.The competition for which the trophy was presented is based on the traditional game of knucklebones or "Jack - Be - Nimble". The now defunct Wattle Festival was a significant feature of the town's cultural life for many years. Varnished wood two- layer base with central pillar, topped with gold coloured knucklebone. Father came from Riddell in Scotland and took up land at Riddell's Creek, near Gisborne. W J Carre Riddell was educated at Melbourne Grammar, graduated in law from Melbourne University in 1882 and practised law until 1907. MLA for West Bourke for 17 years. Chairman of MMBW from 1907 until retirement in 1927. Versatile sportsman. REF: Obituary in Trove - The Argus, 13 March, 1930, p8.The image is significant for its association with Walter John Carre Riddell who was a significant identity in early 20th century Melbourne. His was well-known for his sporting prowess. In early life he was a keen footballer, cricketer and tennis player. In his later years he took up golf. Was President of Royal Melbourne Golf Club and Chairman of the Victorian Golf Association. The jumper was donated to the National Wool Museum in early 2019 from the Geelong Football Club. The jumper is the fourth in the 'country game' range. The oringal 2016 jumper was designed to commemorate a 'country game' against the Essendon Football Club prior to the start of the 2016 AFL Season. The four themes depicted in that jumper included: livestock, wool, wine and wheat. the 2016 jumper can be viewed as entry 7613.White sleeveless Geelong football jumper. The jumper has a large number 4 printed on the back. On the front of the Jumper it has the words Cotton On printed bellow the neck line as well as the emblems for Powercor Country round, the AFL Ford and the Geelong Football Club.Wording. This wooden board has two differently designed sides: one with four strips running the length of the board and the other with seven strips of wood running across the width of the board. These strips and various ridges around the edge and in the 'lanes' assist players as they play card games. The attached booklets describe the sides as Squares (4 strips) or Streets (7 strips), which could be used to play a variety of card games described. On the Squares side: Carpet, Count Nogo, Frames and Poker Patience and on the Streets side: Triangles and Henley could be played in addition to the traditional game of Patience. The board was designed to be used with a distinct sized card (RNIB no. 9087) that could fit between the strips.
