Douglas ALEXANDER (1945-1981) Born Skipton, Victoria Doug Alexander studied Ceramics at the Ballarat School of Mines. In 1968 he was employed as a thrower and designer at Bendigo Pottery leaving that position to work and travel to New Zealand. He settled at Kerri Kerri, Bay of Islands in New Zealand and operated the Red Barn Pottery. In 1970 Doug Alexander returned to Australia establishing Spring Mount Pottery at Creswick where he used local clays to produce his work. He moved to Tharwa, ACT, in 1976 and established the Cappucumbalong Pottery. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Milton Moon (1926-2019) Born Melbourne, Victoria Milton Moon attended the Central Technical College, Brisbane where he studied painting and drawing. In 1950 he undertook study in Ceramics with Harry Menmott and Mervyn Feeney at the Sandison Pottery, Brisbane. He lectured in Ceramics at Central Technical College, Brisbane, and he was awarded a Churchill a Fellowship in 1966. In 1974 he travelled and worked in Japan for a year, and established a workshop at Summertown in the Adelaide Hills. In 1984 Milton Moon was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for his services to ceramics. Milton Moon died in 2019. At the time of his death his website included the following:- "In this, my 'ninety second year,' over sixty of which I have been a potter, I remain concerned, if a little obsessed, with the challenge of making pots, which although belonging to a ceramic tradition of some eight thousand years or more, are undeniably and uniquely Australian. With all my changes of expression this has remained constant. The initial creative inspirations were drawn from the beauty of the coastal areas of Eastern Australia and from the mountain areas of the Great Dividing Range which stretch from North Queensland to the extreme South of Victoria. But the most lasting inspiration has come from the inland of Australia, more particularly from the Gammon and Flinders Ranges and from the Olary Uplands of South Australia, and more recently the Pilbara and Kimberley areas of Western Australia, where rock engravings place them as being amongst the oldest marks left by human-kind anywhere in the world. All parts of Australia are full of an ancient history stretching back through time and which today, despite white settlement, somehow still survives in legend and ritual. If it is the case that these legends do now only exist, in some muted half-life there is still the sense that they remain as a very powerful 'spirit-presence.' It is impossible to ignore the feeling that this country remains inhabited by the past. For me it is also impossible not to creatively respond to the echoes of the past, even if only through the somewhat vague process of inspiration and distillation. Paul Raphael MONTFORD (1868 - 1938) Paul Montford moved to Australia to carve four buttress groups in granite for the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. In 1924 he was teaching at Geelong Technical College. Professor Alfred Mica Smith was a long term lecturer at the Ballarat School of Mines. The sculpture was commissioned by former Students of the Ballarat School of Mines working in Western Australia. One of those former students, William Corbould, remembered his first encounter with the professor fondly:- 'From the Registrar's Office I was led to be introduced to the Professor of Chemistry, one Mica Smith. The initial encounter gave me little encouragement - his large laboratory was filled with hundreds of bottles bearing strange labels with queer symbols on them. My heart sank. At the first opportunity I grabbed my hat and made for the door, but the good professor called me back. I pointed out that I was never any good at school ... so it was no use pretending to be clever enough to understand all those weird symbols! The Professor told me not to worry about that and took me to one of the benches where he found a blowpipe and a charcoal block. Mixing together two powders from bottles on the shelf he transferred a sample to the charcoal and directed the bunsen flame onto it. Soon it began to melt and a white bead appeared in front of my eyes. He then took a test tube and added a little colourless liquid from each of two bottles. A beautiful dark blue colour appeared. My interest was won.' Alfred Mica Smith was the well-loved Professor of Chemistry and Metallurgy at the Ballarat School of Mines between 1881 and 1922. Upon reaching the age of 78 Mica Smith retired having influenced generations of miners. At the time of his death Ballarat School of Mines Students’ Magazine reported: "In the annals of the School, the year 1922 will be noted chiefly as the last year in which Professor Mica Smith taught here. With his retirement, a memorable epoch closed. The Professor has served the School for 42 years with a service, the length and thoroughness of which are unique. … It is not quite realised in this city how famous the School became throughout the world, nor to what extent the Professor was responsible for its high position in the mining and metallurgical world. … This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Greg DALY (1954- ) Born Melbourne, Victoria Greg Daly is internationally known and respected as a ceramic artist specialising in rich glaze effects, and also as the author of Glazes and Glazing Techniques (1995 Simon & Schuster). His work is represented in over 24 international book publications, in over 80 national and international art galleries and museums (including the National Gallery of Australia and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London), and he has won over 36 national and international awards. He has held over 70 solo exhibitions and was President of Craft Australia from 1992-1995. He has exhibited in over 200 international and national group exhibitions. In 1999 he received an ARC grant to research the effect of firing cycles in the development of copper red glazes. Henry MORITZ (1931- ) Born Mainz, Germany Arrived Australia c1952 Henry Moritz was an experienced commercial artist when he left Germany for Australia. After working as a railwayman, coal miner, fruit picker and steelworker, he started teaching commercial art at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School in 1963. He moved to the Mount Helen Tertiary Division, and was head of the Art School at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) when he produced this work. The Ballarat College of Advanced Education logo was derived from the Southern Cross depicted on the Eureka Flag, which was adopted by Ballarat College of Advanced Education in 1978. The logo was designed by former student Debra Garton, who graduated with a Diploma of Art and Diploma of Education. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Geoffrey MAINWARING (29 October 1912-13 April 2000) Born Adelaide South Australia Geoffrey Mainwaring studied at the South Australian School of Arts and Crafts before becoming an art teacher at Thebarton Technical School (1928-36). Mainwaring was adept at depicting a variety of subjects, from landscapes to portraits, and was very competent using a variety of media, including pencil, oils, and watercolour. He was a confident draftsperson, and completed many sensitively rendered portraits that give an insight into the character of the sitter. In June 1941 Geoffrey Mainwaring (SX13471) joined the 2nd Australian Imperial Force, and after five months was transferred to the Engineers and employed as a Sergeant-Instructor, specialising in demolitions. In late 1942, he was sent to New Guinea as an Australian army artist on probation. On 27 May 1947, Mainwaring was discharged from the Army, having served for five and a half years. He was appointed as an artist on a civilian basis until his paintings were completed in March 1948. In 1949 he was appointed Head of the Art School at the Ballarat School of Mines (now Federation University Australia). He continued to paint commissioned portraits for the Australian War Memorial until the late 1950s. Geoffrey Mainwaring died at Ballarat in April 2000. Albert E. Williams first studied art under Fred Foster after being awarded a scholarship to the Ballarat East Art School. In 1913 he became one of the first intake of 83 students to study the Merit Certificate at the newly opened Ballarat Junior Technical School. Williams was the second person to receive a certificate from that institution. He then studied under H.H. Smith for the Art Teachers’ Certificate at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School between 1915 and 1920. Williams joined the staff of the Ballarat Junior Technical School in 1921, teaching sign writing, ticket writing and house decoration. He taught in other technical schools between 1923 and 1928, returning to Ballarat in that year to fill a vacancy left by John Rowell . Williams continued his teaching career at both the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School and the Junior Technical School until 1942. He taught in various other technical schools from 1943, retiring as Headmaster of the Brighton Technical School in 1964. Albert E. Williams continued producing artwork throughout his career, and was responsible for the education of generations of artists and art teachers. Peter PILVEN (1956- ) Born Ballarat Peter Pilven is acknowledged by his peers for his high level of tacit skills, including throwing, and for his sound technical knowledge of materials.Training with John Gilbert's Edinburgh Pottery from 1972-1975, Pilven trained with Joan Campbell in Fremantle in 1976. In 1977 Peter Pilven obtained a Diploma of Fine Art (Ceramics) from Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now Federation University). The following year he worked with Ian Dowling at Geraldton, WA, and with the Western Australian Aboriginal Education Unit in 1979. Vic WOOD (1939 - 02 October 2020) Born Melbourne, Victoria Vic Wood was an internationally renowned artist, craftsman and teacher from the 1970s. He studied gold and silversmithing, woodturning and cabinet making at Melbourne Teachers' College and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He was a skilled woodturner who, as a lecturer at Melbourne College of Advanced Education, taught a generation of woodworkers. Best known as a master wood-turner, Vic Wood retired from lecturing in 1983 to become a full-time woodturner. He was a sought after demonstrator and presenter for all kinds of local and international events. His teaching philosophy was simple: ‘share everything, have nothing to hide, and have no secrets; for ultimately it is in giving that you receive’. Vic Wood was a foundation member and inaugural president of the Victorian Woodworkers Association (VWA). In 1923 the Victorian Woodworkers Association announced the establishment of an annual Vic Wood Scholarship. he intent of the award is to promote excellence in woodwork and to engender inclusive and supportive woodworking networks. PETER CLARKE (1935 - ) Born Deloraine, Tasmania Peter Clarke was both artist and teacher. He held 14 exhibitions between 1957 and 1977, as well as participating in a number of group exhibitions, including Contemporary Australian Painting shown in Los Angeles and San Francisco. He is best known for large colour-field works. Peter Clarke's abstract painting emphasises texture, colour and gesture.
