McKinnon was a small community in East Brighton settled mainly by market gardeners but it had a State School, Churches, a hotel opened by Thomas Bent's father, Post Office and some shops. After WW1 land close to the railway line began to be sold and new homes and various shops were built. A Progress League was well supported and new hall built. McKinnon Rd Shopping precinct did not prosper as expected and some attribute this to the failure to secure the Hoyts picture theatre c 1925. Dark cream coloured dress with bodice and gathered waltz length skirt. Back opening on bodice with six hooks and eyes. Back opening on skirt with two hooks and eyes at waist. Bodice lined with ivory coloured cotton. Short puffed sleeves. Frill around bottom of skirt is edged with purple trim top and bottom. Frill around neck front and back. Decorative purple loops on sleeves and around neckline. Dress worn with a decorative overskirt, (see 11400.124), hand made. 1860's dress worn in 1920 by Ava Jane Hall, granddaughter of W.Lansell. The Duke and Duchess of York (future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, later Queen Mother) visited Australia in April/May 1927 for the official opening of Parliament House in Canberra. Before leaving Australia they passed through South Melbourne and Port Melbourne on 11 May 1927 stopping for brief civic receptions outside both town halls. The royal couple stood in their open car during both receptions. This photograph shows the royal couple standing in the car with Port Melbourne citizens and dignitaries in front of the town hall. The tall man to the left of the chauffeur is Syd ANDERSON, Town Clerk, Cr William HOWE, Mayor is to the right of the chauffeur with presumably Mrs HOWE next to him.
