Functional object - Victoria Railways China Plates - Spirit of Progress
These plates were manufactured for use by Victorian Railways. The stylised monogram of "VR" and wings was introduced for the locomotive "The Spirit of Progress", which completed its first journey on 23 November 1937. A badge of this design was also worn by the crew of "The Spirit" and the monogram was also emblazoned on the front of the locomotive. An article published in The Argus of 17 November 1937, in reference to the tremendous power of the locomotive said "The great V.R. monogram flanked with wings spread for flight enhances the illusion." The "Spirit of Progress" travelled between Melbourne and Sydney until its last journey on 2 August 1986.These plates are representative of those used on the iconic locomotive the "Spirit of Progress" which travelled from Melbourne to Sydney from 1937 until 2 August 1986 A collection of 4 plates from Victoria Railways. Jug, 'Lady Bay' transfer, 1960s
This is a souvenir jug made for the local tourist trade in the 1960s. The jug has an image of Lady Bay, Warrnambool. The official name of Lady Bay is Warrnambool Bay. The jug was made by Westminster Fine China Australia, a firm established in 1954 by the cutlery and silverware firm of Stanley Rogers and Sons of Melbourne. Westminster China was fist established in Cheltenham in Melbourne and after 1977 it was operating in Sandringham, Victoria. It was still operating in the 1990s and produced mainly souvenir and giftware. This jug is retained because it is a good example of the souvenir items offered to local tourists in the 1960s. This is a small white china jug with a gold strip down the handle and a gold rim around the opening and the lip. On the side of the jug is a multi-coloured image of the lower lighthouse and Lady Bay, Warrnambool. Domestic object - Coffee pot, Reservoir, Unknown
This is a vintage coffee pot. From the 1860's - 1930's various companies called their enamelware products by their own unique names, e.g. graniteware and agateware. The enamel coating put an end to metallic tasting food and prevented rust from contaminating food. It did scratch and chip easily.A tall cream enamel coffee pot with a goose neck spout, handle, green trim around the top and a hinged lid attached with a metal clip. There is Chinese blue script printed onto the base 'Reservoir. Candle Holder, 1930s
This is a china candle holder which is a souvenir of Warrnambool with an image on the item of the Warrnambool War Memorial. Czechoslovakia was established as a country in 1918 and began to export china goods in the 1920s and 30s when the label ‘Victoria China’ became well known. The Warrnambool War Memorial at the southern end of Liebig Street was unveiled and dedicated in 1926. It was designed by John King, the Headmaster of the Warrnambool Technical School and erected by the local stonemasons, Wooles and Carpenter. This candle holder is of some interest as an example of the tourist souvenirs that were popular in Warrnambool pre-World War Two. This is a china candle holder with a circular base in brown-orange and white tonings and a fluted edge. The candle holding section is also circular with the same colour tonings and a slightly fluted edge. Inside this are the hardened remains of a candle. The base has a handle attached. On one edge of the base there is a colour image of the Warrnambool War Memorial. The maker’s name at the back has a crown symbol. ‘Soldier’s (sic) Memorial, Warrnambool’ ‘Victoria China, Czechoslovakia’ victoria china czechoslovakia, warrnambool war memorial, history of warrnambool -

Memorabilia - China Souvenir Jugs Woodland Grove Wodonga, c. 1940
A wide range of small china pieces carrying scenic views of holiday destinations or key locations were a popular kind of souvenir during much of the 20th century. Several different pieces were used to depict Wodonga during this period, primarily focusing on the Woodland Grove and the Soldier Memorial. In 1924, Arthur Arnold and his father Wilhelm Arnold had established a general store in High Street, near the water tower, but in 1931–32 they moved to new premises in High Street on the corner of what is now known as Elgin Boulevard. In 1933-34 they widened the frontage of the shop and added new premises at the rear for the sale of produce. As customer debt mounted during the depression, it became difficult for Arthur and Wilhelm to re-stock the shop, so they enticed customers into paying their accounts by rewarding them with a small individual cream or milk jug upon payment. The jugs were made in Czechoslovakia and displayed the war memorial, water tower and bandstand from Woodland Grove, Wodonga. The Arnolds continued to trade until they finally closed their store in 1950. Wilhelm Arnold was a brother of J G Arnold, whose business ultimately became the present-day Arnold’s Fruit Market, Wodonga. This item has local historic and social significance as it depicts which features of the city the community valued in the past. It has artistic significance as an example of the kinds of souvenirs used widely across Australia to represent communities and the landscape.A pair of miniature white jugs with a gold rim and handle detailing. A hand-coloured transfer image fills the front side depicts Woodland Grove Wodonga, including the Soldiers' Memorial, Water Tower and RotundaBeneath the image : "WOODLAND GROVE, VIC. / With Compliments/ from/ A.
