Bottle, Bottle Rowley, Late 19th century
This marble stopper bottle came from the Warrnambool aerated waters manufacturer, John Rowley. A marble stopper bottle was filled upside down so that as soon as the filling stopped the stopper was forced down to seal the bottle against the rubber ring. Pressure inside the bottle would keep the marble pressed against the top of the bottle. To open the bottle the marble was pressed down where it would fall into the neck chamber below. The marble would stay inside the chamber when the bottle was tilted up for drinking. John Rowley (1837-1893) was born in England and came to Australia in 1856. In 1865 he opened a branch of the Geelong Corio Brewery at the corner of Timor and Banyan Streets, Warrnambool, bottling the beer, not brewing it. In 1870 this business was closed and Rowley developed his soft drinks business which he had established in 1868. In 1872 the business was called the Warrnambool Steam Aerated Works when a steam engine was purchased from Melbourne. By this time the factory was turning out 600 dozen bottles a day. For some time Rowley also had a factory in the Western District town of Hamilton. By the 1880s the Warrnambool factory was occupying half an acre of land, was employing 13 people and manufacturing 20 varieties of drinks. Rowley was active in community affairs, serving four years on the Warrnambool Council and he was on the committees of the Warrnambool Hospital and the Mechanics’ Institute. This bottle is of great interest as it comes from the factory of the prominent 19th century Warrnambool aerated waters manufacturer, John Rowley. This is one of the few bottles we have from the Rowley factory. Cordial manufacturing was an important industry in Warrnambool for over 100 years and John Rowley was a key figure in this industry. This is a marble stopper green-coloured glass bottle. The body is rounded with a round base and it has deep indentations at the top of the body that narrows to form a small chamber. The neck tapers to the top of the bottle which has a moulded glass top and a rubber ring inside the top. A green marble is loose in the neck chamber. Details of the soft drinks manufacturer are impressed into the glass on the side of the bottle. ‘J.S.Rowley’s Aerated Waters Warrnambool & Hamilton’ ‘D. Fletcher’s business continued until 1930 when it was bought by Ralph Reeves. Coming to Warrnambool about 1900 Ralph Reeves managed a Banyan Street cordial factory which had been established by John Rowley. Ralph Reeves bought a business in 1916 at Hamilton and sold it in 1929 to concentrate on the Warrnambool business. Reeves was joined by his son Reg in Warrnambool and Reg operated the business from 1946 to 1972. The trade name of Reeves was still used after Reg Reeves died and continued on for some years. These bottles are of significance as they come from the Warrnambool aerated waters factory of Ralph Reeves. Household, Hack saw, Early 20th century
The handle of this hammer looks to be home-made and to have been used as a household tool. Most homes still today include a small hammer as a household item. The provenance of this hammer is unclear but it possible that it is the hammer found at ‘Guthrie’, a house in Merri Street, Warrnambool that was demolished. ‘Guthrie’ was the home of the Dickson family, prominent in Warrnambool business circles. James Dickson, with his friend John Cramond, established a store in Warrnambool in the mid 19th century and this department store, known as Cramond and Dickson, was a prominent business in Warrnambool until its closure in 1973. Helmet, Early to mid 20th century
A steel helmet, popularly called a tin hat, is used as protective headwear by military personnel and civil workers in times of emergency and disasters. Steel helmets were first used in World War One, with the Allies troops using a design produced in London by John Brodie in 1915. This helmet was constructed in one piece pressed from a single thick sheet of steel and variants of this design have been used by military personnel ever since. It is not clear whether this particular item comes from World War One or World War Two. This steel helmet is retained as a good example of the protective headwear worn by Australian military personnel in World Wars One or Two.The crown of his helmet or tin hat is of an oval shape and it has a short flattened brim. There are three small holes for the insertion of a chin strap. The hat has some white paint marks and is very rusted.military headgear, history of warrnambool -

Goblet, Silver South Norwood Athletics, 1880
This cup was awarded in 1880 to James Dickson Junior for winning a 400 yards race. The cup was awarded by the South Norwood Athletic Club. There is a Norwood in South Australia and Scotland and a South Norwood in London. James Dickson Junior (1859-1949) was born in Warrnambool to James and Susan Dickson. His father had established a general store in Warrnambool in 1855 in partnership with John Cramond. This store, known as Cramond and Dickson, was a prominent one in Warrnambool until its closure in 1973. James Dickson managed the London branch store of Cramond and Dickson from 1870 to 1880 and James Dickson Junior lived in London during that time and went to school in Scotland. So the cup could have been won in Scotland but it is most likely from a London athletics meeting. James Dickson Junior became a senior partner in the Cramond and Dickson business and was a leading citizen in Warrnambool as a director of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory, a committeeman on the Warrnambool Hospital Board for nearly 50 years and a president of the Warrnambool Racing Club. This cup is of considerable significance as it was won by James Dickson Junior in 1880. This is a photograph of three men in a heavily laden boat. The boat is tied up to a stick inserted into the bank. There is a black cocker spaniel dog also in the boat. The man in the middle back is believed to be John Trestrail Freeman. The card has been addressed to his wife. Dolly Freeman née Dolly Dean. The other two men , Bot and Paddy cannot be identified. The men are obviously travelling up the river. There is a motor on the back of the boat. The luggage includes a Gladstone bag, suit cases and boxes, indicating they have been travelling a long distance. This photograph is significant because it shows the type of transport available in the 1920's. Also it shows the conditions the three men travelled in. The boat was small, heavily laden with a simple motor. River traffic in 1920 would have been sparse. Also a journey from Echuca to Mildura would have taken weeks to complete.A rectangular black and white postcard showing three men and a dog in a heavily laden boat, which is tied up to the bank.On the back is printed W. GRIMWOOD/ POSTCARD/CORRESPONDENCE/ ADDRESS ONLY/KODAK AUSTRALIA . Handwritten in ink on the back are the words "To Doll from Bot, Tress, Paddy, River Rovers on Trip to Mildura Feb. 1920." Written on the front of the card in green ball point ink are the words "River Rovers Bot Tress Paddy 1920". In the bottom right hand corner in green pen is written "Echuca to Mildura. Tress Freeman."freeman, john trestrail (jr.), mildura, murray river, river rovers, freeman, dolly -

Equipment, Handheld Directional Compass, 1960s
This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.Circular compass, marked by degree to 360. Metal case with cracked glass upper surface.
