This one acknowledges "Landscape with Sheep" by Walter Withers. The text on the board states: Walter Withers depicts in this work a number of sheep on Mr. Tom Orr’s property. Our view is from the rise above this park, from the Lower Plenty side of the nearby Diamond Creek, looking northwards towards the main Eltham township. The area that is now Wingrove Park, would have been to the right, in the valley below the sheep. The mood of this work is warm and vibrant, with the use of strong blues and pinks, and this stands in marked contrast to the softer, cooler greens used by Walter Withers in his work ‘The Silent Gums’. "This sculpture was inspired by the figures carved from the hillsides of the chalk downs in Britain. I wanted to produce a work that would become part of the landscape and was originally derived from the landscape. It is a white-faced heron which is a native water bird commonly found along the Merri Creek. Lorna Chick was a local artist whose works depict farming and community landscapes, which reflected her main occupation of living and working on the family farm with her husband and two sons. Chick was a naïve artist who used the aerial viewpoint as a constant device in her landscapes. Max MIDDLETON (1922-2013) Born Melbourne In a career spanning 60 years, Max Middleton is known as a 'plein air' landscape painter the artist loved to paint sunrises, aiming to capture what he saw on the spot in paint. Capturing the light was crucial to his artworks. Max Middleton studied Drawing at the National Gallery School under William Rowell in 1938, and painting under Harold Septimus Power in 1940. The first of Middleton's 68 professional exhibitions took place in 1946. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Mollie Hill was a famous Welsh-born Australian watercolourist who studied at the Melbourne National Gallery Art School and is known for her 'eye for colour'. Her work features many landscapes of northern Victoria as she lived for some time in Shepparton and Wandiligong. She was also a well-known journalist.
