Historical information of soldiers from the Albury-Wodonga district who fought in the Boer War in South Africa 1899 - 1902. In 1996 the then curator for the 8/13 VMR Museum, the Hon Colonel John Neale, commissioned the author to research a group of returned servicemen and women from the Boer War and had lived within 100 km radius of the Albury/Wodonga townships.The Boer War was the second war in South Africa and was the result of heavy taxes and non voting rights of the local white Boer population. Colonial forces including the Australian Light Horse contingent where called upon by England to overthrow the rebellion. This War was the first engagement of Australian troops fighting on foreign soil.This Honour Roll details the pay rates, the battle highlights, weapons used and maps covering the first Australian contingent of soldiers who fought in the Transvaal (Boer War).. Listed are the names of those soldiers who lived within 100klms of Albury and Wodonga.The soldiers are listed by Location, Rank, Initial,Name and Unit. The significance of both the War and those who served in it is two fold. Firstly it demonstrates that the tie between the Colonial outreaches of England's Empire to "the Motherland" were extremely strong at this point in time. This union remained strong up until the middle of World War II when England could not help Australia to defend itself against possible invasion by Japan. The alliance between Australia and the United States of America replaced the British/Australian pact. Secondly the attitude of, and the high degree of horsemanship of those from the Albury and Wodonga area. This item is a good example of a pre 1960's school science reference books. It contains sketches of experimental apparatus and not colored photographs of later text books. Although the sketches are very instructional they do not show the various colours obtained when mixing some compounds. The history of reprints demonstrates the quality of the information and the ease of study for students using this book. The era of this publication was a time when sources for knowledge in schools was restricted to mainly school books and teacher demonstrations. The student in the 2 Millennium has a far greater reference source available e.g. the internet. This book is significant to the Kiewa Valley as the Davies family (Tas Davies, penned on the first page), belong to the early settlers of the valley. The book acknowledges that although the region was relatively isolated up to the mid 1900s, the good teaching methods of local schools did not suffer in this rural area. This region was not in the backwaters of scholarly development and modern progressive thought. As with "school of the air" distances in rural areas, between centres of learning and recipients, became irrelevant provided that the social stimulant to learn exists. The "local school" mind set within rural areas was, even before the improvement of the communication "explosion" of the early 1900s followed by the internet facilities of the late 1900s, the greatest drive in cutting the anomalies between city and rural learning facilities. The book was first penned in 1971. It briefly covers the period from the indigenous tribes(broken down into family groupings) known as the "first Australians" who lived in the valley well before English settlers arrived. first white settlement (graziers, miners, stockmen) to smaller settlements.The development or transformation from a pristine(hunter/gatherer) valley environment to one that has been gradually changing to a more commercial rural/industrial landscaped valley. This transformation was made within a time span of two hundred years. The book details the first pioneers and their descendants, along with the changes to their environments both domestic and commercial. The book highlights dates and events that shaped the "feel" of the valley. The extreme hardships faced by pioneer families during the extremely isolated times away from "civilisation".This publication provides an insight to the struggles and victories against the harsh Australian bushland by people who had not been raised in such a sometimes inhospitable environment. This newspaper article was produced at a time when newspapers were the main source of local information. The period before the explosion of mobile communication technology and the cost effectiveness of communication by "texting" and internet "social connections, eg. facebook and other social media networkings" The newspapers were the main links between and within large regions. The Hydro Courier was first printed in 1950 as a YMCA community service publication by Mr. Albert Clarke YMCA Officer and Mr. Alex McCullough a State Electricity Commission employee. This paper was one very important publication that provided relevant community information to all and was the major contributer to the "Valley" cohesive fibre and unity. This article not only records the celebration (centenary) of the Tawonga School but also presents the history of the school and important events such as various relocations of classrooms and how the region was settled and developed from the 1870's onward. The yawonga school opened in 1880 on 8 acres of land. It consisted of one large wooden building (22 ft x 11 ft). It had two windows, one brick chimney, bare wooden floor and a shingle roof. This article also presents the time when Mount Beauty area was likened to an island and occasionally school children could not attend school because of a flooded Kiewa river. The article also covers the changes brought about by the increased employment opportunities from SEC Kiewa Works(1935), the Sawmill(1946), the Gold mine(1949) and the Tobacco Industry (largest growing area in Australia).This item is a one page (original) article of the centenary celebrations for Tawonga Primary School came from the Alpine Observer and incorporated the Hydro Courier. The egg preservation material offered in this tin was during a period in Australia's history (especially in the rural areas) when the "freshness" of produce was not able to be maintained by refrigeration means. Rural towns did rely on the "Ice Works" providing block ice for prolonging "produce shelf life" however semi remote and smaller communities did not have that facility. It was products such as this egg preserving ability that enabled these smaller rural communities to maintain a constant source of healthy "short life" organic produce.This tin which contained egg preservative powder is very significant to a rural region (Kiewa Valley) in the late 1800's to early 1900's. It details the type of food preservative methods that were available to rural areas which lacked proper refrigeration means at their disposal. Basic foodstuff which required "special" preservation means to extend their "shelf" life were sometimes regarded as luxuries by semi remote communities. Kiewa Valley and its regions were typical of these remote communities in the time frame of this egg preservation product. The ability to keep products that deteriorate due to "normal" outdoor temperature (bacterior prone produce) was a factor of rural living.This round "tubular" tin has a indented lid which fits snugly into the top opening. The lid has a rolled out lip which ensures a degree of "air" tightness. The tin is pressed and folded together and has no synthetic inner cover to protect the egg preservative powder from the raw tin surface. This "raw" method was the typical application for all tins containing dry food stuffs in this period(mid 1900's) of goods manufacture. The outer tin surface has a tightly pressed laminated paper label with product and manufacturer's information (promotional, preservation "tips" and usage details - will preserve sixteen dozen eggs). On the "front" side "EGG PRESERVATIVE" underneath "OVO" ,underneath "REGISTERED" and in a double lined enclosed square "AWARDED TWO GOLD MEDALS" underneath is a sketch of a mixing dish containing fourteen visible eggs. The bottom label has within an oval boundary (white print on a blue background) "FOR HOUSEHOLD USE" underneath "OVO" and underneath "PRESERVES EGGS PERFECTLY WITHOUT MESS OR TROUBLE" On the opposite side of the tin is printed "VICKERY'S FIRST & ONLY ORIGINAL EGG PRESERVATIVE - in red print. Underneath this is a "round stamp" with the figurehead(royalty) and these encircling words" TASMANIAN INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION" with a scrolled "GOLD MEDAL HOBART 1895" with another medal like "medallion" showing another female face with a "warrior" headdress and these encircling words "HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE". This ticket was used in the 1950's to gain entry into the Mount Beauty Cinema, located in the community Hall. This ticket was donated by the person who attended one film shown in this theatre. This was in an era where before the start of screening, the "British" anthem was played and all patrons were required to be up-stand. Sometimes if somebody was not standing the usher would advise the patron of their patriotic duties to the "Queen" required them to stand unless they were physically incapacitated. This act demonstrated the strong bond to "mother England". From the late 1960's onward this strong show of loyalty "faded away" into history.This theatre ticket is very significant to Mount Beauty because it was the access by the Kiewa Valley residents to "big city" movies. This was in a time frame when television was just beginning to be a popular household entertainment appliance. The Kiewa valley was for a very long time "out of range" for television reception and the only form of screen images were attending the Mount beauty Theatre (just like the big cities but on a more intimate level). Just like the city movie Theatres, the Mount Beauty Theatre, was the centre of the "after five o'clock" entertainment hub. This was a time when going to the theatre was a big event and townsfolk "got dressed up" for this special occasion.It was the gathering place for young and old.This thick cardboard Cinema ticket to the Mount Beauty Theatre (cinema) has two distinctive sections separated by a single perforation. One section for the doorkeeper and one section to "kindly retain". The colour is light green with black print. The ticket was printed by RENWICK PRIDE.On each side of the perforation is printed, "Mt. This barometer was part the hydrology and forestry groups working within the SEC Vic Hydro Scheme from the initial appraisal review long before any construction began in the 1940's. The river flows and rainfall patterns had to be established before any construction of holding dams or tunneling could commence. This barometer is very relevant to the Kiewa Valley history because it presents the high degree of professional and technical information required at the time before implementing the "Scheme" upon the virgin alpine region and its effects upon the "natural" flows of the rivers within the Kiewa Valley. Time since the start of the project has verified the use of instruments such as this barometer and the information gained from its use that the success of any large impact upon a sensitive environment requires a thorough and systematic study before implementation. Weather records were kept of temperature, wet-bulb temperature, wind direction, speed and barometric pressures. To record barometric pressure a meter was devised with a clockwork mechanism which took one week to do a revolution. A chart was fitted to a drum and had an ink pen shaped like a little shovel. The shovel was filled with ink and was checked daily. To calibrate the barometer it was sent to the Melbourne General Post Office to be compared against the one there (at sea level). A book of 180 pages features photographs of Bogong Primary School and Mount Beauty School on the front cover.non-fictionThis book was produced for the 50th anniversary of the Mount Beauty Primary School in order to record its unique history. It explains the role played by Bogong as the field headquarters for the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Bogong Primary School opened on January 1, 1941, and closed on January 1, 1980. It served the children of State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV) workers who lived in this remote area. With the growth of the town due to influx of workers, Mount Beauty State School No. 4644 opened on the 3rd February 1948, in the SEC recreation hall. bogong state school, mount beauty state school
