Sculpture: Peter WEGNER (b.1954 NZ - a.1958 AUS), Peter Wegner, The Blanket (from the 'Black Saturday' series), 2009
The 'Black Saturday' bushfires were a series of bushfires that ignited across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday, 7 February 2009. It was Australia's worst ever natural disaster. The fires occurred during extreme bushfire-weather conditions and resulted in Australia's highest ever loss of life from a bushfire: 173 people died and 414 were injured as a result of the fires. This work is by a local contemporary artist with a national and international reputation for figurative and portrait works. The 'Black Saturday' series is a powerful investigation of emotion and grief as experienced by many Nillumbik residents during the 2009 'Black Saturday' bushfires. A cluster of bronze figurines either stand alone or embrace in groups. Their expressions and gestures of despair are made more pertinent with the raw like application and surface treatment of the material used. The 'Black Saturday' series is a challenging work, but one that encourages healing, connection and empathy. Solitary male figure wrapped in a blanket, clutched to his chest and over his head. Surface treatment is textured. Metallic brown colour with base starting to turn a green patina. Sculpture, Slawa Horowitz-Duldig, Self-portrait by Slawa Horowitz-Duldig c. 1924, c.1924
This self-portrait exemplifies Karl and Slawa's shared interest in the art forms of other cultures - also seen in the significant number of Viennese art books on these topics in the Duldig Studio library. It takes inspiration from Egyptian sculptures and is strikingly similar to the cover image of Götter Ӓgyptens (Gods of Egypt) by Alexander Scharff (Library) although her short hair puts a stylish and very modern slant upon the image. The sculpture is hollow, with a large opening at the rear. Slawa on full face, eyes downcast, hair parted in the middle & pulled back in bun with large comb. Drapes across both shoulders. modernism -

Sculpture - Public Artwork, John Undy, Robert Burns Memorial Statue by John Udny, 22 April 1887
This is Australia’s first monument to the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns and his dog. It was carved from marble in Italy by sculptor John Udny and is inscribed with quotes from the writer himself and features beautiful patterned tiles at its base. This sculpture tells us much of Ballarat’s Scottish history by placing their most revered poet and ballardier of Auld Lang Syne at the corner of Lydiard and Sturt Streets. The local design was carried out by artist John Undy in Carrara marble and placed with this scene. The proud figure of Burns faces west and is accompanied by his collie dog with a book purposely hanging in his hand and a pencil in the other as his constant companions. Burns is mounted on a plinth engraved with some beautiful Burn’s poetry and surrounded by art deco styled tiling and a cast iron palisade. The statue is of aesthetic and historical significance to the people of BallaratCarved marble statue of Scottish poet Robert Burns and his dogIncludes panels with poems and writings by Robert Burns.
